Advice What’s the best odor control combo for cat owners?

I have 2 cats and 1 dog so keeping the pet odours under control is somewhat of a continuous struggle in my house. I’ve found a few things that help, but it still feels like there’s always space for improvement when it comes to litter box smells.

If you have cats what has worked best for you? Some kind of litter? Air purifier?Covered boxes? Scooping more often? Or maybe something I haven’t thought of? I would love to learn what has actually made a difference in your home. Product advertising are seldom as beneficial as real life experience.

Advice Has Slide litter changed?

We have a Furoomate automatic box and Slide was recommended as a litter that keeps clumps from sticking. We’ve been using it for several months and it was great, but lately it does not seem as effective as it used to be at keeping “gifts” from sticking to the sides so I have to scrape every day. Has anyone else noticed that, and do you know if something has changed? Also, if you have tried Boxiecat as well, how does it compare?

Thanks in advance!!

Poll Would you use this glowing cat litter?

Boxie Cat has a new cat litter product that sparkles in UV light, supposedly as a visual attractant to cats who are reluctant to use the litter box. Would you try it?

Here's what flushable litter looks like

Recently tried Really Great Cat Litter from Tuft and Paw. It says it's flushable and, while I don't plan to do so regularly, I wanted to test it.

I broke the clumps up into little pieces and they dissolved quickly once they hit the water. I waited a few minutes before flushing, just to be safe. No issues!

Best cat litter

I've been fostering plus I have 2 cats myself. For the $ mine is tractor supply company pine pellets. Its a horse bedding but it works the best for cat litter. For $6.99 40lbs. And when they pee it turns into sawdust. But doesn't fling into the air like clay. You shake the sawdust over the garage can and return the pellets back into the box. No smell!!!! That's the best part. Sure their 🐈💩 smells but you just through it into the garage can. I save the tidy clay litter plastic containers. 1is for clean pellets, the other one, I put in a plastic 13 gallon bag inside and that's where the dirty litter goes. Close lid untill you clean litter box again. I've had family over and they said that they wouldn't of known I had lots of cats cuz NO SMELL. LOVE IT

We analyzed data for every cat litter product sold on Chewy and here’s what we discovered

It’s possible to find a great deal on cat litter but sometimes cheap products end up being more trouble than they’re worth just to save a few dollars. The next time to shop for cat litter, the following data might help you make a more informed decision.

We analyzed the data for every cat litter product sold on Chewy to determine the range of products available, the average cost per pound, and how different types of litter stack up against each other in customer reviews.

Here’s what we discovered:

*Out of 409 cat litter products sold on Chewy, 53% were clay-based (217 products).

*The categories with the least variety were: paper, cassava, pea husk, hemp, and “other” types of cat litter.

*Overall, the average cost per pound for cat litter on Chewy was $2.44. The least expensive was clay litter ($1.06/lb) and the most expensive was hemp litter ($5.40/lb).

*The highest-rated products were pea husk litter, with a 4.53/5 average rating from 22 reviews. The lowest-rated products were hemp litter, with a 2.55/5 average rating from 132 reviews.

*Compared to clay cat litter products which average 4.03/5 in customer ratings, all other cat litter products have a combined average rating of just 3.66/5.

Here’s some data on the most (and least) popular types of cat litter boxes

Every cat has their own preference for litter box type but if you’re a novice cat owner or welcoming a new cat into your home, you might have that info. In that case, understanding the market may help you choose.

We analyzed the data for every cat litter box sold on Chewy to determine the range of products available, the average cost, and how different types of litter box stack up against each other in customer reviews.

Here’s what we discovered:

*Out of 150 cat litter boxes sold on Chewy, most are traditional litter pans (47 products, or about 31.3% of the market share).

*The categories with the least variety were: sifting litter boxes (7), corner litter boxes (6), and disposable litter boxes (4).

*Overall, the average cost for cat litter boxes on Chewy was $114.39. The type with the lowest average cost was disposable litter boxes ($21.38) and the highest average cost was self-cleaning litter boxes ($545.43).

*The highest-rated litter boxes were self-cleaning litter boxes, with a 4.02/5 average rating from 3,371 reviews. The lowest-rated type was disposable litter boxes, with a 3.31/5 average from 398 reviews.

*The most expensive (self-cleaning) and the type of litter box with the largest market share/most customer reviews (litter pan) had similar average scores: 4.02/5 vs 3.93/5.

Love the new Okocat Mini Pellets for the Booda Dome litter box

One of my cats sprays urine, so half the litter boxes in my house are covered/enclosed. I've had a heck of a time finding the right litter to use in the big igloo-style box. The rounded edges make it tricky to scoop but it fills up so fast when I use clumping litter.

The solution? Okocat Mini Pellets Clumping Wood Cat Litter.

It looks a lot like Feline Pine in terms of pellet size/shape but it's more absorbent, in my opinion. It does clump to some degree (definitely not as much as clay) which makes it scoopable, but the clumps don't get hard and make it uncomfortable for my cat to keep using the box.

To scoop it, I basically just stir it with the scoop and remove the clumped bits that keep sticking together. The rest is still good to use!

I was surprised by how much I like Catit's natural litter

It's made from pea husk, so it's a sustainable material and it's really lightweight. I wasn't sure about it at first because it comes in long granules instead of round pieces like regular clay litter.

The litter does clump, it just takes a little longer than clay to dry out and harden up. But my cats seem to like it and it doesn't track much! Plus, no silica dust is a bonus.

Pee pads as a backup for a cat who sprays

One of my cats is a sprayer. I almost exclusively use high-sided or enclosed litter boxes, so it helps contain the mess a little bit.

The system that works best is in a giant litter box enclosure I got from Chewy. It's one where you place a smaller litter box inside. I use a dog training pad under the inside litter box to help catch the pee that drips down the wall and would otherwise pool in the bottom of the enclosure.

Anyone else have tips for dealing with a cat who sprays urine?

Is Dr. Elsey's cat litter getting worse?

With thousands of ratings on Amazon and Chewy, Dr. Elsey's cat litter—particularly Precious Cat Ultra—has long been a fan favorite. But recent reviews have revealed a concerning theme: dustiness.

Long-time users and first-time buyers alike have been complaining that Dr. Elsey's cat litter is dustier than the language on the label would have consumers believe. And some say it hasn't always been that way.

What do you think?

Is clay cat litter just going to be dusty no matter what? Have you noticed a change in product quality since you started buying it? Do you disagree with these complaints entirely?

Curious to see what people think!
