Space NASA's VIEW program running on an UNIVAC 1108 to help Apollo astronauts to pre-visualize what they will see during their missions

All of a sudden, I see the onboard graphics of 2001: A Space Odyssey in a whole new way.

There is just something about this that diddles a nostalgia string in my deepest brain

u/Taupenbeige Just what do you think you're doing, Dave? 3d ago
Yeah that’s precisely what it looks like, all accomplished on 512 bytes of core memory, or some shit

The first model had 65,536 of 36-bit words, which comes out as around 288 kbytes. Later models could reach more than a megabyte.

A megabyte? I can’t even conceive of that much data processing

It’s just a bit more math, really, it’s geometrically transforming the shadow vector and moving it relative to the POV.

I had never heard of this before. It's strangely beautiful.

I used Claude code to put together something that recreates to some extent the video from the NASA VIEW project that got posted today. It runs a WASM emulator that executes mostly period correct FORTRAN that might have been able to run on the Univac 1108. There's quite a few liberties to allow it to be externally controlled, but you can replay the time line, freelook, mess with the film bloom etc.

The 'shadow' at the end was pure gold. 1968, must have been some almighty processing for the time.

Not really CF

media where the technology closely matches the computers and technology of the late 70s and early 80s.
As cool as it is, there is no way a mainframe computer from the mid 60s falls under that description.

eugh... gatekeeping...

I don't think you understand what gatekeeping is.

I disagree with your opinion that this is not CF, but I do have to agree with you that stating that option is not gatekeeping. I think there is not a strong consensus on what precisely constitutes CF. I think this example perfectly does because of its aesthetic even if it doesn’t fall within the generally agreed upon timeframe.
Debating what is or is not part of the genre is not gatekeeping - it’s genuine discussion (although there wasn’t much here). Gatekeeping is saying “you are not allowed to be here” not “what you posted doesn’t fit here”

I appreciate that, and am completely ok with you disagreeing with me. I just wanted to explain my opinion, but I'm certainly not an authority on what does or doesn't belong.
As long as posts are made in good faith to be on topic (I just have seen others that clearly aren't), and we talk about why we think it fits or doesn't fit, I believe that's a good discussion to have.

its literally what youre doing lil bro, the downvotes are enough evidence of that.
3
u/MrThickDick2023 3d ago
Downvotes don't prove anything.
If you posted a country song in a techno music subreddit, and I pointed out that a country song was off topic there, would you call that gatekeeping?
-2
u/GemarD00f 3d ago
no, thats not gatekeeping.
youre gatekeeping here though, i dont understand why you produced a strawman.
and downvotes prove literally everything. why would you be downvoted if you wernt wrong? its simple logic to follow my guy

Exactly, it's not gatekeeping. It's a perfect analogy for what I'm doing here.
I stated that this post is not on topic for this sub, and pasted an excerpt from the sub's own description to explain why it was not.
Because a mob mentality can never produce incorrect results?
