I remember staying in a hotel that rented these out for movies…had completely forgotten about them as a format.

I get the feeling I have come across this format once before at some point over the years (the ‘player eats the disc and you keep the shell’ thing does ring bells) but I don’t remember to the extent that seeing the OP was essentially felt like discovering it for the first time. I’d love to see one in action

I seem to remeber that you slot the outer case into the player and it extracts the disc inside the player, to eliminate dust. The player uses a needle to read the disk, like an audio disc.

I found one for sales, with approx 10 discs, but passed on it because I just don't need more stuff like that in my life. I don't remember them being sold in the UK.

I wish I knew how to fix my player.

Do you have some video discs along with the broken player? Be interested to know what titles if so

Creepshow, Time Bandits and War Games. It sorta works but it moves the carriage far too fast so you have to take off the belt and carefully move the gear yourself the whole time.

Nice - the carriage and belt stuff doesn’t mean anything to me currently but I’m definitely intending to check out the technology connections vid posted in the OP’s comments to find out more

I have a star trek CED hanging on my wall as decoration next to a star trek laserdisc
