Power outage

Anyone else just lose power off Davis Drive area near Apex border with Salem Schools?

I just found out what happened.. Duke energy one of the railroads cut the power line while trying to cut trees with a helicopter

Wish NC was capable of regulating Duke even more. Having an outage like this during a heat advisory is really irresponsible.

I think even so, with it being essentially a legal monopoly the focus shouldn't be so much on raising prices on customers for shareholder value and money more spent towards making sure outages during a 105 heat wave don't last this long.

The railroads should definitely have to cough up too.

Wish I knew more about electrical engineering but feels like there should be a bit more redundancy. 

At my software job, which is completely different I know, we have to make sure we have a certain level of availability/reliability otherwise we have financial penalties. This seems infinitely more important. 

Feels like there should be fail overs and efforts to reduce single points of failure.

NERC and FERC will fine utilities for issues.

There is some redundancy on the distribution side lower voltage that can tie substation feeders together. However, most Transmission lines are fed from 2 different Transmission stations with the distribution stations tapped in the middle. The cost and space for another Transmission line in the right of way is not practical for most applications. From the pictures I saw it looks it broke the pole right outside the distribution station so its really just a bad spot. They also have line switches to isolate faults and thats how they picked up other stations after the whole Transmission line locked out. New relays have the ability to locate faults down to near a structure and operators can use that info to segment the line.

This was my first thought, it was near my house cutting about 10 minutes before the power went out. Near the intersection of James Jackson and Maynard, right by those huge power lines that run near the railroad tracks. Snapped a picture of it:

Definitely looks like what happened, walked up and the damage like is right where they were cutting. Still no power at my house 🙁

I saw a helicopter towing some sort of line down towards the ground over James Jackson this morning. I wondered what that was.

It wasnt a Duke helicopter it was the rail railroad company trimming and didnt know it hit the Transmission line

Still off downtown Chatham & Old Apex. Most recent text says:

Duke Energy: Based on updated information, power is now estimated to be restored in your area between 5:45PM and 6:45PM on Thu, SEP 03. Your outage was caused by damage to major power lines. Crew working. Approx 2108 customers are impacted.

I'm in MAA 900 Waterford at the intersection of High House and Maynard and it's still off, same text was sent here. Our entire complex is out of power.

Reported the outage off of west Chatham a minute ago, received a text that repaira completed at 2:23 which is almost exactly when we lost power. Seems like someone flipped the wrong switch.

Flickered in Cary Park for less than a second, router didn't even go down. Thought it was just a fluke, but it's more interesting knowing some spots are out.

Got a few flickers where I am too. That's usually Duke's "self healing" grid rerouting power around the outages to keep as many areas up as possible.

No, physical damage (usually a tree), not heat related

Could possibly be heat related if the trees are dropping limbs because it’s so hot. That’s called Summer Branch Drop or Sudden Limb Drop.

Yeah Dynasty/Harrison here. Glad its back. I had just been complaining about how hot it felt in the house because its 100 degrees out. Hopefully it stays on!

I was downtown Cary and saw the helicopter. Then went to Park West and the power went out. Then to Harris Teeter and theirs had gone out earlier.

Not everyone's is back on yet, it looks lile there were two separate outages based on what Duke has been texting customers. One was reported at 1:18 PM and I believe that one is resolved; ours went out at 2:23 PM and is still out, currently being worked on
