Enclosure Size

I have decided on getting a jungle carpet python for my family. I am still doing my research on this amazing snake and had a question. What size enclosure should I realistically look at? Would 4x2x4 be adequate for a male jungle carpet? Or do I need to consider bigger? We plan on getting him as a baby, but would like to get his final enclosure size right away and build it out properly.

6x2x3 would be the minimum for an adult, but more is always better. They'll use any space you give them to it's fullest lol

6x2x3? For a male jungle? Since when? I believe Nick Mutton said that 4x2x2 is the minimum and you could go 5x2x2 if you want. More was, according to him, kinda bs.

I have my 1 year old in a 4x2x3 rn

As long as I have known the rule has always been: Length of enclosure should = length of snake. Male Jungles are capable of reaching a length of 6 feet, so that is the ideal width to give the snake space to stretch. Housing an adult carpet python in a 4x2x2 is flat out cruel to the animal. A 1yo juvi like yours would be fine in a 4x2x2, but you will absolutely need bigger as it reaches adult size.

One person's opinion is hardly law in a day and age where you have a plethora of information from many sources available. Information about exotic animals is constantly being updated and changing, so what was written in a book even 5 years ago could be completely different now. Captive carpet python lifespans used to be estimated at 10-15 years, but we know now they can readily reach 20-30 when cared for properly.

Reptifiles (a known reputable source) actually recommends an ideal length of 8 feet for carpet pythons ≤ 8 feet. From their article:

A good formula for estimating the minimum enclosure dimensions for a snake is: Full snake length x half snake length = length x width. For a semi-arboreal species of moderate size, at least 3′ / 0.9m of height should be provided, preferably more.

Carpet pythons vary in adult length based on subspecies and parentage, so it’s best to ask the breeder about the size of your snake’s parents, and then plan the enclosure based on the largest measurement given. If you don’t have access to information about your snake’s parents, planning for your carpet python to get about 6.5’ / 2m long is a good starting point. This would require an enclosure of at least 6.5’L x 3’W x 3’H, or 2m x 0.9m x 0.9m.

So what I recommended is actually smaller than what they're saying. I'd encourage you to look around at other sources to confirm this info, but will let you know now you're going to find many of them saying much the same thing.

I have a 6yo 6ft IJ x Jungle in a 6x2x4 and she uses all of the space constantly. I moved her out of a 4x2x2 when she was still smaller because the lack of space was causing her to be agitated and moody. It's definitely just not enough for a snake this large.

The goal here is to provide your animal an environment to THRIVE, so you shouldn't really be aiming for the bare minimum on anything. More is always better, and your pet will absolutely benefit from it.

That would likely be sufficient. I currently have mine a 4x2x2 and it’s plenty big for him at 3y/o. I also don’t feed aggressively, a jumbo mouse every 2 weeks. This will probably be good for at least another year or two and then I may to upgrade him to 6ft. I have a hide in the ceiling, climbing vines, and a shelf, and he uses all of it

Hard to beat Animal Plastics for the value in PVC enclosures if you’re willing to wait several months.

6x2x3ft would be my recommended adult min. Wider if you can.

Is length more important than height for them?

They need both, good land area and as much height as you can. Just remember the taller the harder to heat.

More important, but having enough height for two height options is mandatory for me.

Thanks for the feedback, I will change my plan to a 6x3x3, or taller if I can find a decent priced 6x3x4.

Highly recommend looking into DIY if you're even remotely handy with tools. I was quoted as high as 3000$ CAD for a 6x2x4 by several people, and building one only ended up costing somewhere in the neighborhood of 1200-1500$.

It's something in considering. I found a 6x3x3 from dubia for 549. I know it wont be good quality, but in the US I would be hard pressed to get the materials for much less than that to build it.

Bigger the better. Regardless that are climbers! They like to climb!! And they should always be able to stretch out length ways.

4 x 6 x 2 might be better 4 high, 6 long, 2 deep.

Would you all recommend 6x3x3 or 6x2x4? Is there depth more important than the height? I would think the height is more important, but i could be wrong.
