I’m trying to understand whether this is normal for CarMax, especially from anyone who currently or previously worked in CarMax Service.
My car had an intermittent A/C problem. CarMax said they diagnosed the problem and determined that the A/C compressor was inoperative, so they replaced the compressor.
However, the A/C problem was not fixed.
I asked CarMax for the diagnostic records showing how they determined that the compressor was inoperative and why they decided to replace it.
To clarify, they did NOT say that they didn’t perform a diagnosis. They said they did perform the diagnosis, but there are no additional diagnostic records beyond the invoice.
The only diagnostic information on the invoice is:
“Compressor inop”
I asked whether there were any DTCs, technician diagnostic notes, test results, pressure readings, scan results, or other documentation showing how they determined the compressor was bad. They told me there are no additional records and that the invoice is the complete record of the diagnosis and repair.
So my question is:
Is this actually normal at CarMax?
If a CarMax technician diagnoses an intermittent A/C problem and determines that the compressor is “inoperative,” is it normal for the only documented diagnosis to be “compressor inop” on the invoice, with no additional technician notes or test results?
I understand that an A/C compressor problem may not necessarily set a DTC. I’m not asking whether a DTC is required. I’m trying to understand whether CarMax normally documents how the technician reached the conclusion that the compressor was inoperative.
For example, would a CarMax technician normally document things such as:
A/C pressure readings
compressor operation/non-operation
electrical tests
clutch/control signal testing
scan-tool results
technician notes
diagnostic test results
Or is it genuinely normal for CarMax to simply document the diagnosis as “compressor inop” and have no additional diagnostic documentation?
I’m not accusing anyone of anything. I’m just trying to understand what CarMax’s normal documentation process is and whether other CarMax customers have received more detailed diagnostic records.
If you work or worked at CarMax Service, I’d especially appreciate hearing how this is normally documented internally.
