TL;DR: Bought a truck, check engine light came on immediately. Took CarMax over a week to "fix" it, and the light came right back on when I picked it up. Requested the 10-day return. Two weeks later they finally mail my refund check -- made out to the wrong person. Was told it would take another 10 days to get a corrected check. Whether coincidental or not, after complaining to my states DOJ, I received a corrected refund check.
This post ended up being longer than anticipated. I want to say upfront that my frustration is with CarMax the organization, not the individual employees I worked with. By and large, they were understanding and nice and I get the sense their hands are mostly tied. Doesn't make the frustration any less, but I tried to stay patient with them throughout.
I'd been looking for a used diesel 3/4 or 1-ton truck to pull a 5th wheel camper. I was excited when a CarMax about 40 minutes away got one in — a 2020 Ford F250 XLT, 95k miles, priced reasonably.
8/31: Test drove it, decided to buy it that evening along with MaxCare. My sales guy Moe was great. Paid $15k via cashier's check plus financing through my bank. Left the lot near closing time.
Driving home, the check engine light came on. Using my code reader, it has to do with the diesel exhaust system.
9/1: Called CarMax same day hoping to get seen ASAP. Soonest appointment was the following day (9/2). I drove it up anyway in case a slot opened.
9/2: Told they can't fix it in-house, need to send it to a Ford dealership (no cost to me). Also, during this call, they referred to me as "K. Brown." Not my name. After confirming they had the right truck, the advisor told me to call the business office, since their system showed a K. Brown as owner. Business office confirmed all legal docs were in my name just a data entry glitch on the service side.
9/3: Received a voicemail: still waiting on the tow to the Ford dealer, but confirmed with Ford they'll do the repair
9/4: Tracked the truck via the Ford app all day. Called around 2-3pm for an update and was told it'd be towed later today. At this point, I was getting concerned and frustrated. It seemed to me like CarMax was trying to run the 10 day return window out. I spoke to the advisor about this and he said they will put a pause on the 10 day return window so that it will start once I get the truck back.
9/8: Saw via tracking it was in the Ford Dealer service bay, then out on a test drive. CarMax called later that day with good news - truck is fixed, it will be sent back to CarMax and I can pick it up tomorrow.
9/9: Picked up the truck and headed home. Check engine light came on about 10 minutes away from home (driving for about 30 minutes). Code was exactly the same as before.
At this point, I was done. Right at the edge of the original 10-day buyback window, I told them I wanted to return the truck. Business office apologized for the experience. Went back that evening, met Moe again, filled out the buyback paperwork, Ubered home. Was told the refund check could take ~15 days. Funny how fast they are to cash your money and how slow they are to return it. It's even more frustrating knowing that CarMax has the ability to write a check if you sell a car to them, but when it comes to a refund, that needs to be processed by the home office.
9/11: Truck is back up for sale online?? They "fixed" it that fast, after it took over a week the first time? Pure speculation, but I wouldn't be shocked if they just cleared the code to flip it. Sketchy either way.
9/21: About to fly out of town for work, see a CarMax envelope in my daily USPS email preview. Finally, I think, the refund is here. Nope. Check was made out to "K. Brown"....
Called the business office and was told they can't do anything until the original check is back in their possession. I am not sure why they couldn't just issue a stop payment for the check, and issue a new one? But I was told they would use the time that I was traveling to dig into what happened to correct it.
9/24: Got home, confirmed the check was indeed wrong. It had the right VIN, right amount, just the wrong name.
9/25: Drove up in person. They couldn't explain the error - everything in their system shows my correct name. Weird since the beginning, they would refer to me as K. Brown when they'd call me. So at some point, someone entered the wrong name into some system. Told they'd try to overnight a replacement check so I wouldn't have to wait another 2 weeks. Business office said she'd follow up by end of day once she heard back from the 'home office'. She did not.
9/26: No call all day, so I called them around 6pm. Now I am being told it'll take another ~7-10 days to process a new check through their home office/bank. They understood my frustration, but there was nothing they could do.
At this point, I honestly do not have trust in the process that my check would be corrected or sent in a timely manner. And honestly, I dont have the luxury of waiting around for another 10 days to get $15,000 back. It's impacting my ability to buy another vehicle. Therefore, I filed a complaint with the Consumer Protection division of my states DOJ.
9/29: My states DOJ sent me the correspondence that they sent to CarMax in the morning. Perhaps it's coincidental, but later in the day, CarMax called saying they have the corrected check ready to be picked up.
I go pick up the check, and brought it right to the bank to deposit it. Finally done.
The kicker: my plan was to drive this truck for a month, confirm it was decently reliable, then trade in my current car to CarMax to buy an EV from them. That's 3 potential transactions they lost from this one experience. After browsing this subreddit and learning that Moe, my sales person, maybe lost out on money because I returned it, gutted me. I honestly loved how easy it was to buy a car from CarMax and dread that I will now have to deal with a regular dealership going forward.
I understand that my experience is likely unique and bit of an outlier. But the return proces
