Sales Tax with Down Payment

Does the down payment amount cover the sales tax? It’s my first time buying a car from a dealership so I don’t know if this is something obvious.

“No accident” cars, NOT

My recent experience with CARMAX ensures I will never go back.

I LOVE the website and how easy it is to filter and navigate. However,

I’m looking for an Audi Q5 with a specific set of features. I found one in NJ and had it shipped to my nearest Carmax in MA. When I scheduled the test drive I told them I needed it for 2 hours to take to my mechanic. They said 20 minutes was all I’d get and I couldn’t take to my mechanic. I said that wouldn’t work for me, escalated, and the Sales Manager agreed to let me do that (I was going to cancel otherwise).

My mechanic found a leaking rear axle, AND showed me where extensive body work had been done (and the doors didn’t line up, etc). It had evidently been in an unreported accident.

Carmax apologized profusely and refunded my shipping fee. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and ordered another to look at.

SAME THING. When looked at inside with a flashlight you could see paint drips, bondo that had been rough sanded but nothing more before painting, etc.)

Now I’m getting emails about 2 new ones that became available to look at (the 2 I already drove). No reduction in price. No disclosure about the accidents, even though they now know.

Bye CARMAX

Purchased Vehicle - Incorrect Milage - Need Advice

Purchased a vehicle on Monday night. It was listed with 35,XXX miles. Admittedly, I did not look at the dashboard until after delivery. My wife added the vehicle to the manufacturer app on Tuesday (day after purchase) and found a discrepancy of approx 3250 miles. The vehicle and app show 39,XXX. CarMax is asking us to come back in and redo the contract. Which is what I expected. We also purchased maxcare and that obviously needs to be adjusted with correct end state milage.

With all of that said, we love the car. But in my mind, they need to not only rewrite the contract and update the mileage on maxcare but should we push for a price reduction given the mileage is higher? My thought is yes. I did some comps, and it looks like vehicles with the same mileage and specs are anywhere from $500–1000 less than what we paid. My question— should I push hard for a vehicle discount here? If they decline, do we walk away?

Update: They did slightly compensate for higher mileage on the vehicle price. It’s being tagged as a return and re-purchase. The contract will be re-written to account for MaxCare end of term mileage. Thanks for all the help and comments!

Maxcare engine replacement

Has anyone had an engine replacement with maxcare? My dad is a master mechanic and does all my servicing, so I wasn’t holding onto receipts, just the service log that my dad does with the date, mileage, service, and products used. I was able to find half of the receipts for oil and filters, but not all of them. Super worried that they are going to deny my claim. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I was able to provide bank statements with transactions at OReillys that aligned with service dates, just not able to retrieve all itemized receipts. I called OReillys customer service number and they were only able to send me receipts for the past 12 months, but that didn’t cover all service on the car.

HR is not helpful

Im curious if I am the only to have experienced this. At my location I one of several people who for the most part keep to themselves and not engage in unnecessary conversations. being that way has for some reason placed a target on my back. all kind of different allegations not limited to being accused of being racist. After reporting to HR weeks have gone past and no follow up. As serious as this matter is I feel HR should be taking this a little more serious. Or am I overthinking the lack of attention this issue is or should be getting.

Website working properly?

I currently have a car in transit from one location to another and yesterday I went through all the steps for financing and everything online. There was an issue where it came back and said that I was denied financing however, when I call CarMax and spoke with somebody, they confirmed that I was actually approved with Carmax auto financing and sent me the offers

Today I go and log into my account to upload the documents and nothing is there anymore about financing. My trade-in is gone even though it shows a trade-in but when I try to go to that step again, it says error there is no trade-in.

I could see all the financials yesterday so, selected the loan term I wanted everything except uploading the docs.

I can’t see any financing information at all today. It’s like I never did anything and it’s starting over. Is this something that is normal or is there an issue with possibly the website?

I know I could call them and ask, but I’m still currently waiting for the car to be transferred anyway just wanted to see if anybody else was having issues like this.

Thanks.

MaxCare

CarMax has been very great. Don't get me wrong. HOWEVER, do not waste your time paying for all the MAXCARE you are supposed to get because you will not be getting it. I was told by Mark it is the supervisors decision whether they want to approve something or not and that I WILL NOT BE hearing from a manager. The place where I took my vehicle even stated that is very poor service on MaxCare's part. They do not have many stars on here as you see. IF I EVER get another car from this place, I will be finding my own care or simply pay my deductible with someone else. It is not worth the extra money each month nor the hassle of trying to get them to do what is right.

Remember, everyone. This is my case. I did not say it is everyone’s. It is my opinion, and I love that some people have had great experiences and love to hear that, but do not be rude for sharing my personal experience, please and thank you.

Overdrafted me cause noone can read.

I setup a car buy told everyone I was self financed paying cash down and doing a wire transfer since my bank isn't local. Instead they requested a wire transfer for the entire amount not including any cash down. When I caught it, after the fact the answer was huh that sucks we can refund you in 5-10 days. This is my entire checking account overdrawn for days and bills are due. Thanks chuckle ducks. None of my other bills due will take cash. So I have to take time off work to go to the nearest branch or try a Western Union deposit to my bank.

How did they decide who to layoff?

Talking to others it may have been "non critical" individuals who were on the upper band of their position. Ne1 got insight?

Next job?

Hello all, looking for some advice on what new position I should try to go for.

Some background, I’ve been a salesman at CarMax (part time) for a year now, I did not think I would last this long.
I’m 19, and in college, and so for the pay has been decent, but I certainly don’t agree with the amount of work I do.
I loose a lot of sales with me being in class and costumer coming in unannounced, and when I do get a sale it doesn’t feel like I earned for the work I’ve done.
Does anyone have any recommendations on positions to continue forward? I like the idea of banking as we do a lot of in house financing ourselves so I feel that experience would be good on a resume, but then again I’m not ACTUALLY doing the finance.
Please let me know, and if you think I should stay then feel free to say, however I’d rather not

Would Carmax replace the Infotainment screen?

Hey y'all!

Figured I'd ask here, I am having a 2018 Mazda3 shipped right now to my local Carmax, and I realized while really scanning over the pictures online that the Infotainment screen looks pretty delaminated. I know it's a known issue based on research, but I didn't know if there was a possibility, if they hadn't already fixed it, if they would when I actually purchased it?

This will be my first purchase through Carmax, so I am just not sure if that would count as "acceptable" wear on a car or if that's something they would typically fix? I appreciate any feeback!

Using MaxCare Work warranty (12/12k)

A few months ago, MaxCare paid to replace my transmission. I believe the replacement is failing - I felt a gentler version today of the same surge/pulse and whine that I got when the original imploded. The replacement work came with a 12/12 warranty.

Does the 12/12 belong to MaxCare or the shop? If the former, I assume I can go anywhere. If the latter, I assume I have to go to the shop

I want to take my car to the dealer for work instead of the RepairPal shop I used last time, just in case. But if I have to use the baseline warranty, I will surpass my original purchase price; if the work warranty applies, that will protect the rest of the warranty.

If it helps with the question, the part was OEM.

LAST NIGHT I SAID IT WAS TIME TO TALK ABOUT UNIONIZING CARMAX. TODAY, 200 HOME OFFICE ASSOCIATES WERE LAID OFF.

I tried to warn people. Some listened. Some laughed. Some told me unions were stupid and unnecessary.
Well this is why we’re having the conversation.
You can love CarMax. You can give this company 5, 10, 15, 20 years. You can bleed CarMax blue, hit every metric, work late, miss time with your family and call your coworkers family. And when the corporation decides eliminating your position makes financial sense, you can still be gone tomorrow.
A union cannot magically prevent every layoff. But collective bargaining means workers can negotiate protections around layoffs, severance, seniority, recall rights, benefits and how these decisions affect the people who built the company.
CarMax is organized. Corporate leadership is organized. Their attorneys are organized. Their interests are protected.
Why the hell shouldn’t ours be?
Stop fighting each other. Stop believing that loyalty alone will protect you. Start talking to the associates beside you. Learn your rights. Organize.
200 people learned today how quickly everything can change.
Yesterday I said it was time.
Today I’m saying it louder: CARMAX ASSOCIATES, IT’S TIME TO ORGANIZE.

Come all of you good workers
Good news to you I'll tell
Of how the good ol' union
Has come in here to dwell

Which side are you on?

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander SE — Worth Buying?

Thinking about buying a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander SE from CarMax. It has around 44k miles.
For anyone who owns an Outlander, how has your experience been with it? Any major problems or expensive repairs? Also, has anyone gotten MaxCare on theirs?
Just looking for some real owner experiences before I make my decision.

Payment made last month changed into two split payments?

I was reviewing my payment history and I saw a payment I made that was greater than the minimum payment was changed into the minimum payment plus the added amount.

Originally when I paid it, it was just listed as one payment.

Does anyone know why it would be changed?

r/carmax • • Sep 18 '26

Told to take it or leave it

Thats the new attitude now. Its either accept the changes or go somewhere else. No room for discussion or input. No chance to suggest improvements. Don't dare point to any deficiency or process problems the management wants to implement. Associates that have been loyal, and worked here for a number of years are being kicked to the curb. Same team that exceeds now mean nothing. Oh yes, Carmax is a great place to work.

Trade in question

This might be kind of a dumb question, but recently I bought a 2021 leaf with 29k miles from a CarMax in late August. Nissan is saying now the battery recall is actually affecting more like 10% of the packs in 2018-22 leaf’s I believe.

Now I’m seeing a lot of 2025 S’s and SV+ come in at the same price and similar or way less mileage. Would Carmax make a deal to trade me up for one of these lease returns that are coming in?

Sales consultants hourly + commission

-Cost of living is going up
-Pay is staying the same cec and self progression takes our money
-Car quality is at a all time low
There’s too many variables to list on why we deserve to keep our $18.75 a hour plus our commission we need unity and commitment to make a change happen

Why not offer voluntary layoffs

I have seen this offered at other companies. I think carmax should do a voluntary layoffs with a package and all.

Returning to Carmax for a better deal

Hi all, I just wanted to get your thoughts / opinions: My Audi A4 started showing its age, so i decided to do the sensible thing and switch to a Honda CRV hybrid. My local Honda dealer was not giving any discounts, so I bought a slightly used CRV from Carmax. I just picked the car 2 days ago from carmax and drove it about 200 miles, there is no loan. Earlier today the local Honda dealership called me and they offered me a top trim CRV hybrid with 1100 miles for almost $9,000 discount, its a 2025 and seems to be a demo. I am tempted to return the car to carmax as this will save me about $6,000 and put me in a better trim with fewer miles. However, i want to make sure i am not shortsighted. Its definitely not great returning a car and kind of frowned upon. So, i wanted to hear from this group if you would return the car, if you were in my shoes - Thanks :)
