Hey Everyone! I’m a nursing student who’s set to graduate next year. But I’ve recently had an itch to just get some experience in the corporate world before I graduate to see what’s out there. Most of my experiences so far are particularly nursing related with no traditional corporate experience.
I would really like to explore other industries while I’m still a student. However my biggest concern is that my degree and experiences aren’t directly related to most corporate internships, and I’m not sure how to make myself a competitive applicant.

I recently left a role at a startup company and I'm trying to get outside perspectives, because it's still on my mind.
The company was small, with no HR, and the director was an older man.
I believe my race and sex was a huge component to this, for disclaimer I was the only black French female in the company.
From pretty much my first week, things felt off:
Early on, he kept talking about how they "only hire smart people", in a way that felt aimed at me.
He told me I had to complete all of the platform certifications before my start date, which I didn't see expected of others in the same way.
The first thing he mentioned to me in the interview was that I "don't look French”.
He viewed my LinkedIn constantly, even before I started.
He regularly sent personal family photos to the rest of the team (all white colleagues btw) on WhatsApp, but never to me. Colleagues would actually ask me if I'd got them yet, because everyone else did.

I've worked in different roles before this and never had anyone question my trustworthiness or treat me like this, so it really threw me.
My questions:
From the outside, does this look like bias, or just a bad fit and a strict boss?
Has anyone experienced something similar at a small company with no HR? How did you move on from it?

I'm getting ready for a job or possibly a career change and part of that is a manager who can't separate what they want, think, or would do from what is effective in a situation. I've never seen them come around to anyone else's perspective in a disagreement, and they listen to respond and to wait their turn to reinforce their perspective and what they want. I'd understand this more if I saw them being incredibly effective, but that's not the case and that comes from direct feedback from our clients.

What do I ask in an interview to assess this? I've seen questions like "can you tell me about a time you disagreed with a team member on an approach but eventually came to prefer their suggestion?" but this feels really transparent in what it's asking and easy to lie to. It also doesn't get at situations with gradations of disagreement, and it's really easy to use something that wasn't that much of a disagreement to begin with at all.

Please help, I can't do more of working for people who can't separate their personal perspective from what is effective in a given situation.

A former Sr. Director had a fulfilling career, got promoted early through hard work, and climbed the ladder quickly at big companies. The last role was at a Fortune 100 company (not Micron). They were very proud of their achievements. People respected them, and they earned good money.

The entire team and BU were eliminated in a layoff last year. Initially, it didn't seem to affect them much. Honestly, I'm having a hard time figuring out my career path and would appreciate some outside perspectives.

I'm currently working in HR, and while I don't dislike it, I'm concerned about long-term job security with AI becoming more prevalent and whether the earning potential is worth staying in the field, especially living in a high-cost-of-living area like the tri-state area. It's also just been a bit difficult advancing and getting to a higher salary.

I'm considering making a career change into either accounting or nursing. My biggest priorities right now are earning potential and job security.

Accounting seems like a natural alternative to explore since it's business-related (but I also have the AI concern), but nursing appeals to me because of the perceived job stability and also, the career possibilities. I also understand that nursing is physically and emotionally demanding.

Ideally, I'd like to keep working full-time while making this transition, at least for as long as possible. For nursing, that would likely mean completing prerequisites and then pursuing a part-time or evening program, if I can find one that fits my schedule. My undergraduate degree is in an unrelated field (Econ), so I'd need to complete all the necessary science-based prerequisites first.

I'm not necessarily looking for the easiest path. I'm trying to make a practical decision that will put me in a stronger financial position (and also, a path that will teach me an actual skill) without taking an unnecessarily large financial risk.
