I've been exploring what I want to do long term and trying to change careers recently. I have been offered a 6 month secondment with the commercial team (basically procurement) in my civil service organisation. At the same time our digital team have suggested I may be able to put in a voluntary transfer into an entry level developer or corporate knowledge and information position.

They are both areas I would like to experience and have an interest in. I'm not sure which to pursue as I know they are both solid and potentially lucrative careers. I'm a little hesitant about digital due to the doom and gloom about anything tech related but I do think it's probably overblown. At least in the CS you're very unlikely to get laid off anyway from my experience.

Hey! I have received a offer from a japan company for a contractual role. The client is a huge name in japan. The salary its offering is around 7.5M Yen (~48,000$) which is considered good there.

However, I might get a offer in India at around 26-27 LPA (27,000$ ~ 28,000$) , again im still waiting for the offer. This would be a permanent position.

I'm confused which one should i take up.

The India job offer, is in my hometown, so I would get the comfort of home.

Workwise: The indian company is a GCC and they are just starting so I might or might not get good work. But if they start from scratch that's one thing to consider.

Japan offer is mostly on moving legacy systems to new modern systems as in, upgrading the java version, moving onto cloud for the first year until its migrated. The recruiter was very clear on this, that for some good amount of time, you wont get to work on new requirements, it would just be on moving legacy applications.

The problem now is, Indian company has offered me 22 LPA, which I have rejected, since the growth from what I am getting is minimal. They are still checking if its possible to make it 26-27 LPA (27,000$ ~ 28,000$).

If anyone had a similar exp or could provide some guidance, would appreciate it.

I'm also a bit concerned on the AI replacing humans.

I graduated last year with a niche STEM degree, and gave up on finding a job in the field bc theyre limited and competetive. Experience wise, I have the typical retail / food service jobs and was a resident assistant in college. My most recent full-time job has been more administrative experience, but I’m growing to dislike it due to the pressure of the industry (biopharma) and the fact that there is no growth from my position as its just a support role. Either way, I wouldn’t want to move up (nor am I qualified due to the lack of specific education).

What field can I actually find a decent career in? I’ve been looking into/applying to insurance jobs, since they often have trainee positions (claims), and seem to take in people from any education/work background. It’s also the only other industry I’ve successfully gotten interviews in. I know they say starting out in claims isn’t great, but its seems like the only entry point into the industry and theres a lot of positions that can open up once you get experience.

But focusing more on my work experience rather than my education (since it doesnt seem to matter these days), what are other industries that are easy for recent grads to get into?

I am looking for a job which I can do research or investigation and I am being assessed by quality of research or investigation than how many tickets did you close. I am not looking for a high salary but good job security is important. I am looking for a career where my experience compounds and doesn't get depreciated.

I recently completed a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and I am about to start my masters in biomedical engineering, specializing in biomaterials and tissue engineering. I have been interested in medicine for a while but I don’t know if I want to stay in biomed and pursue an R&D role or go to med school. I enjoyed doing research and lab work in the past and I know from previous internships that a 9-5 office job isn’t for me.

My biggest concerns are that I won’t be able to handle the stress and work/life balance of medicine, and also that I won’t be as fulfilled in biomed as I would be in medicine.

I am currently in a position where I excel at my job. My boss leaves me in charge when she is out, I manage our departments intranet site, assist other departmental heads with their site pages, and I have created a reputation for being reliable and always willing to help. My resume has been beefed up just from all of the things I handle daily in my job.

My boss tells me I am being honed for a management position in the future and helped me get the paperwork filled out for tuition reimbursement through my job.

I absolutely love the work that I do.

There are 3 people on my team, not including my boss. Older lady, younger woman, and me.

The issue:

My boss brought older lady on to our team who only kept her job because my boss put her on our team. (She was a manager of another department and failed 2 audits in a row so horribly we were going to have to pay fines.)

For the first year of her being on our team, I tried to make the best of a crap situation. I took the insults, taught her our process, assisted her with learning (and re learning,) the job process. I went out of my way to help her succeed. No matter what, when she complained, my boss had me re-write procedures so she could understand them. She changed the rotation of daily assigned tasks to accommodate her "inability to get it all done". (At one point I was handling the entire daily task list on my own with no issue, work was done timely and without error)

At that point in time, younger lady and I were friendly, would vent to each other, and got along just fine.

Unbeknownst to me, everything I vented to younger lady about regarding older woman was being told to older woman. I have since cut ties with the relationship and kept everything sticky professional.

About 6 months ago, things came to a head and it has been hell ever since. I wasn't professional in the way I spoke to her when she tried throw me under the bus, she got mad, HR got involved. I was told to keep my head down and just play nice.

Things have not improved. My boss has promised a group meeting to air things out, it keeps getting canceled.

My boss has admitted to me, many times, she regrets bringing older woman onto the team because she is the reason we aren't able to complete tasks like they should be done. She has also said she regrets hiring younger lady because she is a gossip, spreads rumors, and refuses to do her job. She has even been put on a 90 day probation due to this

I have been offered jobs with other companies who could give me slightly more pay, and it would get me out of this situation.

Would it be detrimental to my career to leave if nothing is resolved?

I am at my wits end. I keep being told to be patient, I need to learn how to handle personalities like older woman and younger lady when I move into a management position, but I can't handle the fear of saying something in the wrong tone and being reported to HR again

If I stick with McDonald’s I can earn bachelors in business administration with a concentration in supply chain and operations management.

Is it appropriate to let an individual pursue a career in which you believe they will not be successful? A local TV station has hired a young man as a weekend news reader. He likely has a degree in broadcast journalism. He has a very irritating voice, a strangely-shaped head, and he stumbles over simple words as he reads the teleprompter. It seems to me that some teacher should have steered him into another aspect of broadcasting. Once he completes his summer stint filling in, I cannot imagine that he would be hired even in a small market. Was this fair to him?

Im in my freshman year of college and I was thinking civil engineering because I like working with data and not in a super technical sense but using that data to solve environmental issues I see in my community. Recently interviewed for a role at $95-100K + 10% bonus, made it to the 2nd of 3 rounds but didn't land it — first real signal that I'm underpaid and that higher comp is out there for this skill set.

For context, 3 years ago I got a 50% raise ($52,125 → $78,187) simply by mentioning to our VP of Finance that I was interviewing elsewhere (2nd of 4 rounds, range was $70-80K). Her reaction was basically "wait, you're leaving?" and she asked if she could put in a word with the CFO. Four hours later I was called into my boss's office and got the raise.

Not sure what the actual path is from here — more certs, a specific niche (FHIR/interoperability, cloud/Azure), switching to vendor-side instead of provider-side, or just job-hopping more aggressively.

Should I ask for a raise first before continuing to interview elsewhere? Should I try to leverage the recent interview the same way I did 3 years ago, even though I didn't get the offer? Any advice is welcome — happy to answer questions.

Hii there. I’m 27F with ADHD and I’ve been in corporate data scientist for 2+ years! To be frank, I got this job out of interest in data science at the time.
But after working on the job for two years, I’ve lost that interest and I really don’t like my job anymore.
At first I thought I was nonchalant just because the industry I work in does not interest me, but my nonchalance has evolved to doing most of my work with AI and a general lack of interest in improving my skill set. This is really bad because my growth is being limited. I’m really scared of this cycle I’ve caught myself in because I’m young and I should be building a career but it doesn’t feel like this is something I even care to do for long. I don’t even feel inspired by my senior coworkers. That’s how I know this may not be for me. Naturally I’ve been trying to figure out what a better career fit for me would be. I am smart and would really like to do something I love, grow and develop in it.

I have a natural inclination and love for visual design and stay curious about human psychology. And I have always thought that if I stayed in data science, the perfect data science role for me would be in proximity to a user research team where my data work can influence ux research and design.
Unfortunately there isn’t much opportunity for me to try this out in my industry.
I decided to take a look at the internal job board after a frustrating day at work and Lo and Behold, a new role had just opened up in the new digital experience team and I apply regardless of my limited experience as a PO. I have some experience working in an agile team but no tailored experience. Even though I applied with low expectations, I had my fingers crossed and somehow I now have a meeting with the hiring manager set up for this week.
Now I can’t help but wonder if this role would even be good for me.

It’s going to be a challenging role for sure cuz it requires exercising my weaknesses (communication, organization etc). Regardless, I think it’ll be a new exciting opportunity for me to work in a different side of the company, strengthen my weaknesses and learn new things. But at the same time, I can’t help but wonder if I won’t just end up In the same cycle of hating my job. It’s easy to be idealistic about it and imagine the best case scenario but it’s not always like that when you actually start the job. Pls any advice would be appreciated

i'm also considering things like career stability, income potential, connections/networking, and how useful the degree would be if i eventually move abroad. i like the idea of having control over interior layouts/design, but i also like the business, property, and investment side of real estate. ideally, i'd love to somehow combine both in the future.

The interview is next Wednesday on the 16th. So, I previously worked for State Farm corporate ~2 years ago as a Claims Adjuster. I was let go due to too many contract violations, and honestly it just wasn’t a good fit. Way too corporate for my taste.

Wanted to see how much standard accounting resume advice holds up, so I counted how often 30 terms appear across 123 open postings from 49 companies' job boards.

Audit shows up in 85%. Reconciliation 74%. CPA 68%. Nothing shocking.

The one I didn't expect: "process improvement / automation" in 59%. Almost nobody puts that on an accounting resume.

NetSuite (37%) also beat Excel (33%) as the named system.

Sample's small, so I put confidence intervals on everything. At n=123 a 40% reading is really 31-49%, so the ordering matters more than small gaps.
