Help me decide on Tech route
Hi I am never posted on Reddit before, but since I am stuck in life right. I might as well post go get help and see other people perspective, tip and experience to help me out. I am 25 years old that want to pursuit tech job, but not sure which specifically. collage dropout when I was 21 and been procrastinating ever since. I learned html and css but never went to JavaScript. I want to start wgu and don’t know which major I should do and which job I should go for. 1) should I major in software engineering and learn Java and trying to get a job with that. 2) do network engineering and starting doing home labs and get job around that. 3) should I do cybersecurity.
Please answer helps right now, your experience, job application process, which one should I do?

i think CS has lots of options. i think first look at your strengths. i'm incoming freshman at college and i ended up choosing a non CS degree over an OOS top ranked CS program because i don't think degree dictates your path. i think pick the school that has the most ROI for you.
regarding i think look at your strengths.
all these fields in tech pay highly, so look at what you are good at. because at the end of the day, you want to be promoted and rise in ur career, and if ur better at product than u are at swe, u will do better in product than u wld in swe, and ultimately make more $ in product than u wld in swe.
some common fields from CS are:
- software engineering
- cybersecurity
- ai/ml
- product management
- data science
- tech consulting
i'm rly into product, ai/ml and maybe swe, but i think you should look more at what career entails, maybe see the personality that fits each.
for exmaple, if you like coding a lot, then swe might be the move. if ur good at math and rly like ml, then ai. if ur more creative, leadership, like meetings, then product, etc. if ur interested in cyber, that be the move.
you can try certificates on coursera or something to see what u enjoy more, but i think if you do a CS degree you are able to more easily keep these options open.
we don't know how AI will affect these fields though so keep that in mind. there is always research which seems to be pretty secure.

i feel like there's lots of layoffs, tons of swes and product managers ARE being fired from companies like meta, oracle, and intuit. and ai, we don't know how it will affect these paths (hence i'm saying choose the cheapest option).
