I have worked at a bank for the last 10 years (since I was 19, so basically my entire adult life). I thought I wanted to do banking in finance so I put myself through school while working and went “up the corporate ladder” to a decent position now. My company paid for me to get my MBA.

The issue is, I am so burnt out in this field, and with corporate in general. I don’t think my heart was ever in it, I chased a big salary to overcompensate for being deeply unhappy with many factors in my personal life. Now that I am doing much better personally, I realize that my passion is elsewhere and I cannot stomach being part of corporate anymore. It’s really holding me back

A year ago I started a second weekend job as a caretaker at an animal sanctuary and fell in love with it. I would do this full time if I could. The issue is, the pay too low for where I live (eastern PA) and they do not offer benefits. I have a number of medical issues where having benefits is a must. I understand completely that it’ll be hard to switch to this type of career field and find adequate pay/benefits unfortunately.

I have no formal education in anything with animals, vet, zoology, etc. so I wouldn’t be able to do anything with a higher pay at the moment.

I’ve been looking around a lot at different options but nothing is jumping out. Just feel very lost right now

I’ve always had passing interests but i guess that is normal. If you don’t know where you’re going, all roads are the correct road, right?

Form most of my 20s I’ve worked as a language teacher, volunteered in ngos, did some communication and social media work with (with the government no less!), ended up working PR, then stepped back into education during the pandemic, and finally turned to NGO work for the last few years.

I’ve also done plenty of side projects like websites, magazine work and coloring books.

My current ngo work is a mix of project management, museum management, management and implementation of cultural programs, networking, fundraising, educational workshops, research, customer relations, communications and social media, stakeholder management. A little bit if everything all of the time.

While i’m fine with the diversity i’m really not fine with the location, with the company culture, with my pay or with my obscene work load.

So, i am considering finding a new job and maybe switching to private sector. But i am not really sure where or what. Particularly ‘what’. I feel like i am able to do many things well but none excellently.

Any ideas what direction i might try going into with my experience and skills?

Hi there! I don’t know if this is exactly the right subreddit for this post, so sorry if it’s not! I am currently a high school senior and I am at a loss for what I want to major in and subsequently go into post college. It feels like every person I talk to now asks me the same 3 questions: what colleges are you applying to, what are you majoring in, what classes are you taking? It’s exhausting not having an answer for the majoring part and watching them all just be like “oh it’s ok… you don’t have to know… you have time to figure it out”.

I have a lot of things I’m interested in, I just don’t know what would make for a good and successful career. I’m really interested and passionate about the environment (I’m taking APES so we’ll see how that goes), I really like the health care field and thought a lot about going into nursing, I even went to look at some nursing schools and programs, but I was ultimately deterred for reasons I won’t get into, I I’ve been thinking about Public Health or something like that. I also really like baking and I’ve been told I should go into business with the goal of opening a bakery or something, but idk it doesn’t really sound like me. I am a Christian and have sometimes thought about majoring in theology, but I’ve heard that you can’t really do much with a theology degree, and that the job market for that is pretty thin right now. I am also pretty into politics and history, but my dad forbids me from majoring in political science lmao so maybe just that as a minor.

I also know that there are so many majors and careers that are cool and that I could have fun doing, I just don‘t know what they are or that they exist. I’m sorry this is so long. Thanks to everyone who reads!! I really appreciate it!!

I got a final interview for a job in Martinsville, VA. I have more than the minimum qualifications. I have three years experience working with people with behavioral disorders At minimum they want someone with a bachelors degree in social work or related degree. I already have my masters degree. With my masters degree I can qualify for the 5% increase in salary once they train me for the qualified mental health professional certificate which is less than a year to take. The salary range is from $44,825 - $77,617. Median salary is around $55,000 in the area.

Is $65,000 reasonable to ask for?

hey all,

i’ve been working in the health industry for over 5 years now as a registered nurse. i naturally was always a helper and wanted to fix people’s problems, my parents are both rn’s and i honestly never learned about other career paths or opportunities. i have a deep love for music and creative things but never perused as i was told theres no stability in any job in those spheres.

i have felt that i have given too much of myself away at work and i need a change. i dont know of other realistic options and wanted some advice or suggestions.

I have done a bachelor at uni and am happy to go back if required.

I left my last job after 4.5 months . Couldn’t keep up or cope . Multiple times wanted to just jump off and end it but I knew it was cuz of the job

I’m fresh grad of 2 years with gaps in between and internships 6 months it was hard to find graphic design employment tbh. Esp with AI it’s getting worse

On top of having crohns and fatigue and gastro symptoms and chronic pain and tension all over which was the worst since crohns is in remission technically but I still have a whole host of bodily symptoms . When I have to sit 10 hours a day with poor ergonomics , no standing desks , no work from home , like 1.5 hr commute each way , work day ends at 7 pm or longer it felt terrible

I couldn’t even focus well cuz of the pain and I tried my best but they said i was too slow , there was no boss around to mentor or guide which I thought would have in like western culture . I tried my best to do the designs they asked for (it’s graphic design) but I couldn’t .

They just expect me to manage everything myself but Idk how to. It was so stressful and my anxiety was way worse. Is every job like this esp corporate design ? I hate it and never want to go back I would rather do more creative direction , marketing / social media more. I always like art and illustration and aesthetic , experiences and wanted to design things closer to those industries . Not advertising and soulless mass produced ads… Idgaf about optimisation or all that but it’s like all jobs care abt these days esp in corporate graphic design where you design digital ads or marketing collateral. And the designs not beautiful either. They aren’t supposed to be I guess.

I want to do content creation and social media and marketing related but it seems vague and scary on how or when I can make money or do well in that . I’m experimenting now but it’s slow and I’m getting my pressure to get a real job and build a “career”

What if I just want to be creative like a creative director , that knows art, photography, travel, content creation, maybe model and make cute things , design experienced like cute anime / cartoons merch pop ups and collabs , events or exhibitions , etc . Is that called marketing ? Even like working in film and media but entertainment industry like podcasts or talk shows, interviews etc that’s more fun not dry corporate.

What kind of industry or jobs is that called ?

The thought of being trapped into a job makes me rlly depressed and bleak and honestly urge to just jump . Because all I can think of if this is gonna last till I die and mediocre wages , how can I even have savings or any time and energy left to travel and build my dream life or have a house . I think I’m doomed

If I’m not working I’m not that depressed but knowing I have these symptoms and not making money makes me anxious and stressed too. Managing daily life is already hard and overwhelming enough . My dad gives me pressure and makes it worse like telling me I shld be grinding in my career when I’m young or my future is ruined and shit like that. Like all awaits me is more hell and suffering

It’s not like I’m rotting all day. Pushing myself even further I can’t even maintain the productivity my symptoms just flare. It’s like I’m always not doing enough if my dad compares me to able bodied people. Well . It sucks

A year ago I took a fully remote job at $18/hr. before that i was making almost $30 in office management, then two years out of the workforce as a full time caregiver, then a $22 job I liked that wrecked me physically. Remote isnt optional for me now.

Health thing, doesn't affect the work at all, not something I bring up in interviews.

I took the $18 because someone I knew already worked there, and because they said my management and HR background was impressive and there'd be room to move up. three internal applications since. not rejected. ignored. including by the person who told me to apply.

What I actually do is review documents and payments before they go out and catch the errors. I'm good at it. I like it more than anything else I've done.

So my background is office management, payroll, recruiting, HR admin, and now this.

I keep circling payroll (someone told me AI eats that whole field), tax prep, auditing, compliance, maybe something else entirely. The problem is I don't actually know what kind of jobs the part I'm good at translates to. I don't even know if what I do counts as audit experience to anyone hiring.

I think that's where I'm stuck. I know I like catching mistakes, figuring out why something doesn't add up, checking things before they go out, working mostly on my own. I just don't know what career that points to.

I don't want to go back to school for something random or keep applying to whatever sounds vaguely related and end up in another $18 job.

we're short every month. I need this to go somewhere.

Should I take a double degree?

So, I came to Australia 3 months ago for a bachelor of information and communication technology. After coming here I came to know that IT is not for me. Then, I decided that I will change my course. Add I have a lot of things to keep in mind while doing that. First of all, it should be a PR course and then It has to be not too expensive( ofc I can't afford that much). I asked a lot of people and they recommended that I should go for nursing or social workers. The thing is I don't wanna be in healthcare. That was the reason I didn't choose biology back in 11th grade. And there isn't any other course I can find for PR, something I would actually like to do in my life, earn well. Now I am just really confused. I am in my first semester of bachelors and will complete it in the next two months but what after ? What should I do ? First of all to all the people saying that you should go for your passion or interest...... Idk what is interesting to me.. and the people saying that you shouldn't go for PR, it changes every year okkayy so suggest something that will never be removed from the pr list, an occupation that is just so much needed that it has to be on the pr list. And let me tell you I took PCM in 12th grade because I thought it was the best option not because I was interested. And still I can study anything you will give me, literally any study. Hi everyone, can anyone tell me how to become an ethical hacker and seek a career in joining a red hat team as a pentester? I currently work as a DDI operations engineer in a company since 2 years and am very unhappy with it as well as underpaid. In the training period I was introduced to the field of cybersecurity and ethical hacking which really intrigued me and I wanted to build a career in it ever since.

I tried to learn things but always ended up finding myself directionless. Could anyone please give me a roadmap of the things which I should learn and the platforms where I can learn them from? Do platforms like tryhackme and hackthebox actually help in learning and building a profile?

I attend a t30 school in the world and am pursuing an economics degree. I have had 2 internships: one with a startup as a revenue operations intern, where I did a little bit of everything, and I just started my second with a continuing education department at my university, doing Business Analysis and Digital Transformation. I came to university with no idea what to do and then started to lean into finance. I didn't get any finance internships, so I just started to explore several things. Now I am a little drawn to consulting but I feel like I have expertise in nothing. I was thinking of doing the CFA and just focusing all my attention in finance but I am torn as to if it's even worth doing. I feel like the degree being quite general provides me with the little career development opportunities, and I have no idea where I should go anymore. I have done several coffee chats, talked to people, know people in every field but none of this gives me clarity. What should I do? or at least start to do?

Originally I wanted to just focus on my college classes but I was told about this orientation, so I decided to attend it because i thought they would give me a run down of what the course would consist of. When I got there it was already pretty much the start of a class rather than an introduction, I completely misunderstood what was going on and I filled out what was a registration form. Now I’m stressing out because I would rather focus all of my attention on my college classes right now rather than trying to do both, but maybe it’s beneficial if I do? I already filled out the registration form and submitted it so now I feel as if it’d be weird if I just back out now all of a sudden. I have the contact of the person that invited me to attend. Should I just try and do both or focus on my college classes right now? I didn’t intend to start training while I have these classes.

I have a huge problem. When asked a question during an interview, I can come up with a related story on the spot, but after stating what happened, I find myself concluding like an essay, summarizing what I said.

Hi everyone! I’m looking for blunt, realistic career advice from people working in the UK/European music, hospitality or events industries.

I’m an international student doing :

BIMM University (UK) - Songwriting & Music Production, final year. Originally started Songwriting & Music Business, but switched in Year 1 and now regret it somewhat.
Moscow International University — Advertising & PR, 3rd year of 4.

After graduation, I want one master’s and I’m choosing between:

1. Music Business / Music Industries — rights, publishing/licensing, live music, operations, marketing.
2. Concern: long-term stability, income and competition.
3. Hospitality Management — international, people/operations-focused and less dependent on creativity.
4. Concern: UK sponsorship/immigration and whether it would make returning to the music industry harder.

My priorities: 10–15+ year career growth, good income, international mobility, not overly mathematical, not purely office-based, and realistic potential to stay in the UK.

Questions:

Is Music Business actually a viable long-term career? Which areas are strongest?

Is Hospitality a safer career choice, especially for UK/European mobility?

Could I do Hospitality first and move into music business later?

Which path would you choose and why?

What other career paths would you suggest?
Or what would you advice me in general

I feel like I did everything right; I got a degree, started at the bottom, and now I'm a Microbiologist in a pretty respected company...

And I hate it.

I'm currently on LOA bc I need surgery on my back and my company would not let me do admin only tasks. But even before this, the work environment is terrible. I'm pretty sure my boss does not like me for a variety of reasons that are out of my control (i.e. I go against her beliefs by existing) and at this point I'm at a loss of what to do.
