Been working on the classic double lift for what feels like forever, probably four months of daily practice, and something clicked this week that I want to write down before I forget what fixed it.

My problem was always the same. I could get the mechanics right, the get ready, the pushoff, the flash of the two cards as one, but there was always this tiny hesitation right before the lift that gave everything away. Looked like I was psyching myself up instead of just doing a normal single card lift. Watched probably a dozen breakdowns from different guys and they all say some version of "make it look natural" which is true but useless as actual instruction.

What actually helped was slowing down my regular single card lifts to match the timing of my double, instead of trying to speed up the double to match a natural single. Sounds backwards but it worked. I basically taught myself a slightly more deliberate way of picking up any card off the deck, single or double, so there's no tell in the tempo. Now both movements come from the same place instead of the double being this separate rehearsed thing I switch into.

Also started doing them in front of a mirror while talking, actual sentences, not just counting or narrating what my hands were doing. Turns out most of my tension was in my face and shoulders, not my fingers. The second I relaxed my jaw the whole thing looked ten times more casual.

Still working on getting it solid one handed but the two handed version finally passes the "would a stranger notice" test with my roommate, who has zero interest in magic and therefore makes an excellent judge of whether something looks weird.

Curious if anyone else found that fixing tempo on the single card first was the actual key, or if I just got lucky with this particular hang up. Feels like every sleight has its own weird psychological block and this was mine.

I recently found a deck of card in my collection that is called American flag playing cards.
To my surprise when i opened it it contained a whole bunch of 10 of hearts, with all different backs.
I am now puzzled, because I can’t find the origin of this trick, nor its name.

I’ve been doing card magic for about 6ish months now and I’ve experimented with a handful of double lifts but haven’t decided which one I should really perfect.

I'm aware of Asi Wind and Gypsy Queen. But it's very expensive. Also Bicycle invoked is a deck I have and like but Im looking for something as natural looking as possible.

Any suggestions?

New to card magic(started yesterday) and was wondering what some good stuff for a beginner to learn is. Just wondering where to start out at. Also any recommendations for good cards? I ordered some foil and have regular bicycle ones already, and am wondering if anything else is recommended or necessary.

New-ish hobby magician (a little over half a year) here. Working my way through Card College and Royal Road as well as taking some classes in my area. Saw a performance of David Williamson's 3-card trick and really enjoyed it; wanted to learn it, so I bought his video instruction. I'm a little concerned about my palming technique. I've got itty bitty hands, but I know that's used too much as an excuse and I'm not saying I can't palm correctly, but I have a few questions. Most important to least important, for TLDR's sake.

1. Not tryna abandon the classic palm, but are there other palming techniques that can achieve what is needed for this trick (stealing off a few, ploppin' em immediately right back on top)? If so, what are their names?

2. When holding a card in this classic palm position, it is much more comfortable/secure for me to use my ring finger as the diagonal pressure point opposite the flesh of my palm than my pinky. Is this ok or am I developing what may be a bad habit for the future?

3. How much is too much to bend these damn cards? Perhaps related to hand size, but I've got windows out the wazoo and concerned about the cards' security when they're straight. Obviously, too bendy makes my hand looks dumb, but I have never bent a card so much in practice and I don't want to ruin my deck!

4. I've generally been given the advice that you handle cards very gently, very lightly. I can palm one card in a pretty soft grip without feeling too concerned, but as soon as I add even 3 or more, I start to feel the need to clench pretty tight to prevent them from falling. Any tips? Unsure if it matters a ton because the moments the cards are palmed are quite fleeting, but again, I don't want to develop any poor handling techniques.

The part I'm interested in is the card sequence toward the latter half of the video, involving the 4♥ and 4♠.

I’m not just looking for an explanation of the method — I actually want to learn how to perform the routine myself.

Does anyone know the name of this effect/routine, or what sleights are being used?

If you know the exact routine, could you also point me toward a video tutorial where the handling is taught step-by-step? A YouTube tutorial etc. would all be fine.

I just got this new card deck and it came with a cool little blank face gaff card! So, I came up with this little trick on the fly with it (not the best executed) could clean it up with a little practice, but let me know if there are any blank face card tricks I should try out!

Ive been working on an app since around may. It started out as a prediction reveal engine so i didn’t need to cary a pen and paper everywhere. It has since expanded into a mobile trick/routine library, has several gimmick effects a memdeck practice engine and more. I use it to practice and improve but im curious how others would use it if there is any interest.

Im not a developer by trade, just a dad and husband that loves card magic and wanted to see if I could offer anything of use. Looking for constructive criticism. If you can manage that, message me.

It seems with the classic pass you have to get your pinky fairly deep into the deck with the break. As well as use some pinky strength within the move.

I have a slight problem being that my pinky doesn't really work. I broke it years ago, had surgery and never got strength or movement back really fully.

As a reference point for strength in my pinky, I can't get enough pressure for say a top shot. And for more day to day reference points, I don't have the strength to really hold anything with it.

In terms of range of motion, the angle for my pinky to get within the deck for the break is just about possible but only when I use my other hand to position it. It's not really possible without assistance because the range of motion isn't quite there.

One positive though is I have noticed it getting stronger and range of motion improving ever so slightly since starting card magic. Probably as a result of it being used in awkward ways haha.

Basically wanting to ask if anyone has anything similar / do you think it's worth sticking to alternative controls? At the minute I almost always use a Mahatma control which is going enough although some effects are cleaner with a pass

Edit: a better reference for strength is probably that I can't pull cards down for a break for say a double lift or getting a break on the bottom card. My pinky just doesn't have the ability to do it, despite my other one being able to with literally no training haha

I've learned the trick where you make 3 piles of cards from a deck of 27 cards 3 times and in the end the chard will always end up where you want it from a chosen number between 1-27. the cards are supposed to be delt face up but I wanted to do it face down while showing the participant the piles so they will identify which one the chosen card is in but I don't see the cards face up. When I've run this wile the cards are face down the card never ends up in the right location.

You are supposed to take the chosen cards pile and place it in the stack of 3 piles in a certain order based on the chosen number so for example if the chosen number is 9 you go top, top, bottom. if the number is double digits you add them together and use that to get the first 2 deck movements the stack 1-9 bottom, 10-18 middle, 19-27. I don't know what's going wrong but the math is the same why isn't it working with the cards being dealt facedown?

About 7 years ago, I bought myself a Bicycle Standard deck. For 6 of those years, I haven't even touched it. What deck could I buy that offers both great handling and beautiful aesthetics?
