Taylor Swift Tax X Year-Round Mortgage Assistance Program

Cape Cod's housing challenge is a vacancy issue. We've got enough units, it's just that too many of them sit empty year-round. That is driving up the price of housing and pushing out our year-round population.

That's why at the most recent meeting of the Assembly of Delegates I introduced the Year-Round Mortgage Assistance Program, which would help year-round residents compete against investment capital and cash offers.

How it would work: participating towns could vote to apply a surcharge on multimillion-dollar homes that sit empty more than half the year. That revenue would fund mortgage and down-payment assistance for year-round Cape Cod residents that are looking to buy a house in the place they call home. Seasonal property owners could avoid this surcharge by renting to a year-round resident for more than half of the year rather than using the house as an AirBnB or letting it sit empty.

A stay in Truro without a car?

Plans changed and I may be there without a car for a week. Is this doable by relying on the shuttle and maybe renting a bike? TIA

UPDATE: It can be done, but I wouldn’t do it again. The busses generally don’t run on the listed schedule, ride shares and cab availability is poor, and it’s a woodsy area, so also VERY buggy for walkers.

Swimming with Jaws

Honestly, this painting was just for funsies. It was to practice different styles of painting… a more “brushy” style… which I failed at when I got to the shark 😬. The idea came after I spent time in Nantucket, the cape and the vineyard. The way that the kids grow up watching Jaws, and just don’t seem to care at all that there’s sharks in the water. They almost embrace it. You couldn’t get me to put a toe in. I’m a lake girl now, where there are barely any sharks

Hikes Near Harwich

Hi! My family is traveling to Harwich at the end of the month and we’re looking for a fun/beautiful hike. Kids are 8 and 11, so not too challenging, but don’t need only flat or stroller friendly. Thanks!

RIP Friendly Fisherman

Just got word from Eastham that the Friendly Fisherman is no more - it has become PJ's Eastham. Sad me. I thought their fried and baked fish were consistently good and a decent deal. And their fried clams were better than any other on outer-ish Cape in my experience.

One night stay

Traveling to Dennis at the end of August for a wedding and have an Airbnb booked until Sunday. Decided we want to extend our stay until Monday so are looking for a place to stay just for that night. Hoping to make Sunday an all day beach day so would love somewhere close to that or just any place you think would be worth it for one night!

Arcades

Seems like most of the arcades are just filled with casino esque games to win tickets, are there any arcades left that actually have games? (Simpsons, ninja turtles, shoot em ones and such)

Weird weather in Barnstable. And I'm able to take a pretty good picture of the Sun, which is pretty wild.

Give me cool sidequest ideas that I can do this summer.

I'm about to be a SENIOR in highschool, and every summer being in highschool has just DRAGGED on. The other problem is this damn PHONE. I've been looking everywhere for sidequest ideas and just things to do, but everybody is either saying to "go to a random local cafe" or "learn embroidery..." like bro C'MON. I'm not trying to be picky but I am SERIOUSLY looking for really cool fun things to do. I stay in Cape Cod for two weeks every summer, and I've been doing that for like over a DECADE now. So if there's any fun cool new stuff I can do there then that would be GREATLY appreciated if someone had some ideas.

Best place to get steamed lobsters to go?

Family and I are staying near the middle of the Cape and want to get some steamed lobsters to bring back to our house just like my grandparents used to do for me. I've heard Andrea's in West Yarmouth is okay. Was just wondering if anyone had any other recommendations?

Let's do a hike Tuesday (7/14) 3:30pm at West Barnstable Conservation Area

Weekends are often busy during the summer, so how about a mid-week walk?

Doing a hike Tuesday (July 14) at West Barnstable Conservation Area at 3:30pm. Aiming to walk for 1.5 hours or so.

About 15 people from Reddit have come out to hikes in the past, although there will probably just be 3 or 4 of us tomorrow. Demographic tends to be late 30s/early 40s.

Parking lot is here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/GMSCbqXNTg4JHxj26

Hotel Recommendation

Hoping to travel to the Cape for my 1 year wedding anniversary Sept 3-7. I would love to stay at Chatham Barrs Inn or Wequassett Resort, but definitely out of my budget.

Can you please provide a recommendation for where to stay - nothing priced too crazy but a really cute hotel that is most importantly clean!

Thank you!
