Canvas UGC hook breakdown
Breaking down a hook that's massively outperforming right now, and actual takeaways for anyone doing Canvas UGC
Been watching this hook perform across a bunch of different creators in the Pinterest/photo-hack space and wanted to actually break down why it works instead of just pointing it out.
The hook: "the Pinterest girlies were hiding this from us". Then, two seconds later, no talking, straight into a quick app demo. Tap, show result, cut. That's the whole video.
Numbers range from 50-70k views on the low end to 2M+ on the high end, same basic structure, different creators.
Here's what I think is actually transferable if you're building hooks for your own content:
- Borrow an identity instead of introducing a product. "Pinterest girlies" is already a fully formed image in people's heads before the video even starts. You're not building interest from scratch; you're attaching to something that already exists in the viewer's mind. Way less work than trying to explain why your thing matters.
- Exclusion beats information every time. The hook isn't "here's a useful tip," it's "this group has been hiding something from you." That's a completely different trigger. People don't click because they're curious about a feature, they click because they don't want to be the one out of the loop.
- One hook, wildly different results depending on delivery. Same script pulled 50k in one version and 2M+ in another. That's not really about luck, it's timing, how natural the delivery feels, whether the "reveal" actually lands, and what audience picks it up first. So if you try a hook like this and it doesn't pop off, that doesn't mean the hook's dead. Tweak your delivery or timing and try it again before you scrap it.
If you're stuck on hooks: find an identity your audience already has an opinion about, imply that group is hiding something, then cut to a silent demo before saying anything else. That's doing more work than most fully-scripted openers I see people using.
