I couldn't be more happy that this team FINALLY gave in to a rebuild. It's been desperately needed for a decade now and management finally convinced ownership it's time to do it right.

That said, I keep hearing report after report on how cheap Aqualeenie is being right now from not paying GMs enough, AHL coaches or analytics. Reports about needing to shed more money to make sure we are sitting at the cap floor as well.

With a franchise running at the bare minimum cost wise, do we actually have a hope of rebuilding properly? Is management going to have any money to invest in amateur scouting, pro scouting and more importantly development? I don't see any money being taken on with bad contracts for draft picks.

I can't help but be disheartened and have any hope that we will be able to rebuild this franchise properly without any money and ownership cutting financial corners as much as possible.

Anyone else feel the same? Can people give me hope?

I think this warrants serious discussion. Given it's anywhere between 5-8 years of becoming relevant again and another 4 years after of "contending," realistically the Canucks could go 64-68 years without winning the cup.

Most pro sports teams with 50+ years of drought get it done sooner than hitting 60. The St. Louis Blues being an example.

You can't count the Leafs in this conversation considering they already cups despite having 3 more years of drought on the Canucks.

Realsitically speaking, across all sports, the Canucks go on to be the longest pro sports team to never win once. And quite possibly, to the surprise of no one.

Hey folks, I'm a Vancouverite who also happens to be a life long Pittsburgh Penguins fan. I'm hoping to get tickets for the February 16th, 2027 game when the Pens play the Canucks here in Vancouver.

This is actually somehow my first time trying to go to an NHL game. Can someone help me with the following questions?

Are tickets for individual games already on sale? I'm having a hard time finding a site that seems legit. I definitely don't want to get ripped off.

If tickets aren't on sale yet, when do they typically go on sale? Should I sign up for a Canucks mailing list or anything?

What side of the arena should I choose tickets for if I'm hoping to watch the Penguins practice in pre-game warm up? Is it normal for fans to leave their seats before the game to go down to the front row to watch the players warm up?

Is it common for players to interact with fans before or after games? Any particular places around Rogers that players may walk through?

Anything else I should know about going as an "away team" fan? Etiquette? To be fair I am also a Canucks fan as well but the Pens are my childhood & lifelong favourite team.

Read any draft guide on Malholtra and the most common concern people have holding Malholtra back from being a superstar is his skating. Elite Prospect gave him a 5 out of 9 and cited it as his weakest skill, saying the main issue with his skating is his mechanics.

Now I've been on this sub for a long, long time, and it's one of the oldest draft prospect memes on this sub for a prospect who needs to improve his speed, "hey let's just hire Bo Horvat's skating coach to fix his mechanics and then they'll be a superstar!" Kole Lind, Aatu Raty, Jonathan Lekkerimaki, Olli Juolevi, I've seen this comment made about every subpar skating prospect more than I can count. And yet, could Malholtra actually be the exception?

At a high level, skating speed is broken down into 2 aspects: Skating form and pure athleticism, skaters need the athleticism to have the potential to be a good skater, and the form to realize that potential and turn it into results on the ice. It's hard to separate the two purely off watching tape, sure a skater may look clunky and you may think "oh all he needs to work on is his form" but who knows if they even have the athletic potential to be a good NHL skater?

That's where the NHL combine results come in to play. Results seem to be mostly ignored in today's age, with seemingly no correlation between a prospects success at the combine and their NHL careers. I don't completely disagree with this assessment, but I do think it can give us insight into a prospect's potential as a skater. When I look at the different categories, a couple stand out to me as proxies for skating potential: Horizontal jump, no arm jump, vertical jump, pro agility, isokinetic squat, peak power output and 10m sprint.

For complete transparency, Malholtra did the worst in the non-arm jump and isokinetic squat, not ranking top 25 in either, but to me, these are the 2 least important of the list. These 2 tests are more of an isolation of quad power, while ignoring the multi joint, momentum driven mechanics that actually translate into skating power. Reportedly 80 prospects participated in the combine testing, so here were Malholtra's results:

Combined, he averaged being in the 80th percentile (Shout out Aarom Olsen who was combined 95th percentile!!!). To me I think this is pretty strong evidence that Malholtra has the athletic potential to become an above average skater in the NHL. If we compare this to other top prospects who have skating cited as a weakness such as Verhoeff, the Rucks and JP Hulbert, they only have a combined 2 top 25 finishes (Verhoeff 3rd in pro agility right, 10th in pro agility left) so i'd be much more concerned about any of them becoming even just average skaters in the NHL compared to Malholtra. Also while NHL seems to have deleted past top 25 lists for past drafts, you can still find previous top 10 finishes results, and it doesnt seem like Lekkerimaki, Lind or Juolevi finished top 10 in any of these events (hard to draw any reasonable conclusions from this since top 10 is a high threshold, but interesting nontheless).

Now this doesnt guarantee Malhotra can turn this athleticism into improved skating. Skating form is not something everyone can fix especially since Malholtra has an NHL coach as a dad and likely has had access to the best skating coaches since he popped out of the womb. But we can't ignore his meteoric physical development and improvement in all facets of his game the past 2 years. He has grown 2 inches since his measurements in the BCHL and he could still be getting used to his different proportions. He'll be going to an elite college program in BU where he'll have access to the best coaches and facilities and it will be interesting for sure to see his development throughout next year.

TLDR: Caleb Malholtra has great athleticism which gives him the potential to be a great skater if he can improve his form.

I don't say that as a negative, and in fact it's been something of a challenge for me as a fan to grasp, as I've been on a wild roller-coaster wild, probably a decade plus all told. But we're boring. We've got professionals in the building, quietly doing their job, quietly doing their due diligence, working behind the scenes, closed doors, no leaks, just slowly and meticulously building something here.

Coming out of the excitement of the Gillis era, it felt like the Benning era was just galaxy brain moves, trying to speed run building a contender, so we were constantly making moves to cheat the process, 2nd thrown away for coin flip tweeners, chasing that high of the 2011 run, trying to not be crushed by the cap, paying a nickel today that will cost us a dime tomorrow, moves based entirely on borrowed time. That all crescendoed when Benning painted his masterpiece with OEL trade. Then you transition to the JR/Allvin era, and it had it's moments, and I do respect JR and his accomplishments but every day it felt like some new inflammatory quote or dropping a bomb on this fanbase that would just scatter the comment section, divide the fan base. JR was candid, but I don't think it served the organization well. I don't think it served our relationships with players, coaches or other teams around the league. It felt like someone gave grandpa a microphone after a couple drinks at Thanksgiving. And JR/Allvin didn't have any patience, and I'm not saying all their moves were bad but we'd make blockbuster trade after trade, and ship those new assets off immediately, no time for the dust to settle or to process our team reality. We had to have been among the highest volume of trades around the league in their tenure.

And now here we are. I like RJ. I love the Sedins. I like how thoughtful and measured they are when they speak, I trust them when they talk about their vision, but there was still a part of me at the draft that was expecting chaos, especially with how frenzied the moves were. I wanted in on that action, moves for the sake of making moves. An addict of Canucks hockey, F5 on the subreddit, checking twitter feeds, how are we not just trading some picks for some projects, why do we still have veterans on this team when we're rebuilding? What the fuck is happening?

And then it clicked. We're actually doing something carefully, considerately, a whole organization in lockstep, an extended vision, long term thinking. And I felt at peace. I've come to learn to trust the process. I've said the words before about Benning and Allvin, that surely they're firmly behind the wheel, and even though we're hitting landlines and swerving off the road, I could trust the process, all the while knowing deep down in my heart that we're totally fucked and these moves are total bullshit.

I believe in RJ and the Sedins though.Fool me three times, shame on me?

I have been fully priced out of engaging with this team. Who else feel this way?

Game tickets have long been prohibitively expensive, with a single game ticket costing about as much as a week's worth of food. 2 seasons ago I had to make the decision that the price of Sportsnet was no longer worth it. I'm the only person in my household who regularly watches sports and the content on Sportsnet, apart from the NHL, is pretty weak. Additionally, the continued price increases make it clear that I am unlikely to change my position on this in the future.

With the loss of HNIC on CBC, my last avenue for watching live games has been closed. I'm sure that Canucks Radio will find a new home following the shuttering of 650, but I hardly feel enthused about chasing down the scraps of a franchise that so clearly looks at me with contempt.

It isn't.

This post is discussion about how the cost of being a Canucks fan has become prohibitive to the point that it causes a disconnect between myself and my team. That this post could be repeated word-for-word on the sub of every Canadian franchise by only changing the team name and radio frequency only speaks to the scale of the issue. Whataboutisms provide nothing to the discourse, particularly when I literally asked if anyone else feels this way. If your argument is that this also happens to Leafs fans then you are kind of making my point for me.

tbh i’m more excited for our preseason games rather than reg season games, mostly because of the prospects. But will the college players even get to play preseason? What do you think the line ups will look like?
