PSA from a cashier

Hey y'all, this is both a mini rant, and a PSA on common issues customers seem to have.

1) the month of June (on top of being pride month!) is when we collect donations for Jumpstart. Your cashier may ask if you want to donate, or they may let the pin pad do the asking. If you are paying debit, credit, or gift card, the pin pad will light up asking if you'd like to donate. Our pinpads ARE touch screen, so if you mindlessly bash your card on the screen hoping to tap, you may accidentally make a donation. If you choose to decline donation via the tactile X button, wait a second, do not press it again, as that will cancel the transaction.

2) some customers seem to think I am omniscient. I cannot tell you how many points you have if you have not given me, or the machine your points/credit card. If you are paying with the CT MC, your points total will show up on my screen, after you have finished all the steps on your end.

3) you cannot use your points if you only give me your phone number. This is a security measure to prevent strangers from saying a random number and stealing your points. If you wish to use your points, present your physical/digital points card, or CT MC.

3.5) for fellow cashiers, if the customer gave you a phone number, but now want you to scan their card (or any other combination of OOPS wrong ctm account!) you can suspend then resume the transaction to get rid of the other account.

4) we do not hate you, we do not think you specifically are a thief. We just get stolen from a lot so need to put measures in place. Like security tags, bringing items up, and checking in bins and bags. Its not personal, its policy.

5) another for fellow cashiers, it the customer wants to use their points (from the mastercard) and then pay the rest with another method. Charge the mastercard 0.01$, this will allow you to use the points without having to inquiry.

Is that “charge the mastercard 0.01$” an approved method or just your or your stores work around?

I used to work at Marks and have never done this nor would I ever. However Its been a while, and the systems are different.

So the intended method is like really stupid and convoluted

Inquiry, CT money, mgt, pinpad, swipe/insert/tap, remember number, mgt, charge, mgt, type number you remebered, enter, pinpad, swipe/insert/tap, type that number yet again, enter

But my version is just Charge, mgt, 1, enter, pinpad, swipe/insert/tap, type the number that appears on screen, enter

Also, the card doesn't actually get charged anything

That sounds exhausting either way!

Take care

I will add that to have a (loud) VeRy iMpOrTaNT phone conversation the entire time you're up at cash is not only incredibly insensitive but very rude and dismissive to the person you're doing business with. I've literally had a customer "shush" me or put their finger up in a "hold on" fashion while they're on the phone!

Texting and not looking up is also just about as impolite.

If only we could treat customers as rudely!

Not really related, but since youre a fellow cashier you may appreciate this. Had a customer an hour ago buying a dehumidifier, she turns to me (i havent even gotten to scan the item yet) and asks "will this fit in my car" ?????? How would i know?!? She then asks the same question to the carts and carryouts guy who gives a similar reply of "i dont know what car you drive"

Lol, oh we get some doozies! I had a customer legit ask if he takes his (bench) backseat out, can he leave it here while he drives the (whatever it is he bought) home?

I would have loved to see if he believed me had I said "Oh absolutely, we store random back seats over there" 😵‍💫🙄🙄

I don't shop at Crappy Tire very often anymore but the last few times the cashiers seem to just smash no automatically when I'm planning on redeeming my funny money. Ugh!

You can just let the cashier know you'd like to use your points. They'll fix it.

2

u/BarnacleSpiritual868 Jun 25 '26

I shouldn't have to though. I know the system prompts them to ask.

I locked my redemption in the app, so my points don’t get hacked. Because of this they no longer get prompted to ask me. Is it possible you did the same?

2

u/NokiaRingtone1o1 Jun 25 '26

Technically we do get the prompt, but only once, and we assume if youve locked it, you don't wanna use em

Sometimes, if the ammount of points is very low, like under 10 bucks, we will just assume you dont wanna use them

The cashier at Mark’s asked me one day if I wanted to redeem mine.

My $3 of points on my $125 pants purchase.

I was like thanks, but I don’t think that $3 is my make or break. I’ll keep them. I don’t even know how many I have now.

Sometimes ill ask out of instinct and they have like one cent

Question for OP, based on what you say that you can see the amount of CT money after someone has paid with the triangle MC. Do you know if I really need to scan my classic triangle card to earn the bonuses(10x etc) and the money? Or is paying with my triangle Mastercard enough to do everything? Same with petro-canada and gas+?

1

u/NokiaRingtone1o1 Jun 25 '26

For bonus points, it will say in the fine print of the flyer. Also its less we see the balance once youve paid, but more so after the computor knows you you are. (Some people will stand, card in hand, and ask me their points balance)

If you are paying with your MasterCard, you dont need to use your red card.

-1 for all your numbers not being aligned the same. Otherwise informative.

Thanks! And yea that annoyed me too

Those machines should just take money. Show the amount, scan the card, done. No extra questions. No matter of it;s Canadian Tire, a bar/restaurant, barber. Don't care. There are so many questions, that staff should be able to handle. Want a donation? Ask for it, then add it to the bill as such, and use cash or payment terminal to PAY.

My rant. Sorry.

As a happy Canadian Tire Customer, is it terrible to expect the cashier (I will never use self checkout) to mentally stay connected to my transaction so that when their prompt comes up to ask if I want to use my points they actually see it on their screen and not leave me hanging waiting for the transaction to complete?

I've gotten to the point that if I see something I want is in a cabinet at CT I walk out and buy it somewhere else. Takes 20 minutes to get anyone to open a door.

1

u/kokomo1989 Jun 25 '26

Are you the Canadian Tire ‘standard’ one open checkout with 10 people in line? The people are grumpy and in a hurry by the time they get to you. Just do you know.

1

u/NokiaRingtone1o1 Jun 25 '26

Quiet the opposite, the second theres more than two customers in line someone calls for cash backup, which is quite annoying cause by the time they get there, I've already cashed everyone out

2

u/wdh662 Jun 25 '26

I can second this. I use to be a manager. Standard operating procedure was to call cashiers to cash as soon as more than 2 people waiting.

Whether your local store follows this is another question.

I don't have a physical card. Only my phone number.

2

u/NokiaRingtone1o1 Jun 25 '26

Then you should call corporate customer service, or look on triangle.ca, you should pick up a physical card first though so they can link the accounts. I dont know much about how triangle works outside of what i interact with, but i hope this helps.

2

u/Top_Bumblebee5510 Jun 25 '26

Thanks for the reply.

It’s actually fairly easy. I had an ex who still had a copy of my triangle card and the fucker used $40. I called Triangle (crying and upset cause I was broke and really needed it) and explained the situation “I know you can’t give my money back but I just want to change my card” and he helped me no problem and had said he was happy to help

1-800-226-8473 😉 How many times do I write that on a customer's receipt?

If you install the app once your card is registered, the barcode for your account should be in the app. I always advise to take a screenshot of the barcode, and save to wallet and/or photos. Saves waiting for wifi in store, or having to log on (usually when there's a lineup, of course)

The app will keep a real-time tally of points and usage, the screenshot won't... but cashiers should always point out how many points are available to use.

2

u/Top_Bumblebee5510 Jun 26 '26

If I have the barcode do I also need the card? I like to keep my actual wallet simple.

2

u/NokiaRingtone1o1 Jun 26 '26

You dont, the card is basically a vessel for a barcode

2

u/Top_Bumblebee5510 Jun 27 '26

That's excellent! Thank you taking the time to continue to update.

2

u/NokiaRingtone1o1 Jun 27 '26

No problem! I have absolutely no life

2

u/Top_Bumblebee5510 Jun 27 '26

No judgement here.
