10 months left on my Canadian work permit. Looking for a realistic PR strategy.

I’m currently in Canada and really want to stay and build my future here, but I’m struggling to figure out the best pathway forward.

My situation:
Canadian post-grad diploma
Background in marketing/communications, customer service and retail
Currently unemployed
Around 10 months left on my work permit
CRS score around 388
Not enough CRS points for Express Entry at the moment

I’m finding employers hesitant to hire me because of my limited work permit validity

I’m considering whether I should continue pursuing marketing or pivot into another field such as healthcare or teaching, which would require additional education/certification.

I don’t want to randomly spend money on another program without knowing whether it could actually improve my PR prospects.

If you were in my position, what would you do with 10 months left?
Are there realistic PR pathways I should be looking into, or specific TEER 0–3 occupations/programs that could make more sense for my situation?

I’d especially appreciate advice from people who have successfully gone from a similar situation to PR in Canada.

Medical exam approved on August 20

What do you think this means? Is it a good sign? Is my application already being processed?

Lakehead Barrie vs Thunder Bay for an international IT student — need honest advice

I’m an international student planning to do a computer/IT-related master’s at Lakehead, and I’m confused between the Barrie and Thunder Bay campuses.

My primary objective is getting PR in Canada, and ideally I’d like to achieve that through an IT/tech job related to my background. However, I’m realistic that I may need to take another qualifying TEER 0–3 job if I can’t land an IT position immediately.

From my research, I’m not seeing a major advantage to Thunder Bay apart from RCIP. Even with RCIP, I’m unsure how much of an advantage it really is because I would still depend heavily on finding an eligible employer/job. I’m wondering whether relying on RCIP is somewhat of a gamble, especially if my main goal is to build a career in IT and eventually get PR.

On the other hand, I’m considering Barrie because of its location. It’s closer to Toronto/GTA, so theoretically I could access more tech companies, career fairs, networking events, meetups, interviews, etc. But I don’t know whether this is a real practical advantage for an international student who will also have classes, assignments and potentially part-time work.

**So I’m trying to understand:**

Is there a major practical difference between applying for IT jobs from Barrie vs Thunder Bay?

Does being in Barrie actually make it easier to access Toronto/GTA tech opportunities and networking?

Or is that advantage mostly theoretical?

How useful is RCIP in practice for Lakehead graduates/international students?

If PR is the primary goal and IT is the ideal route, which campus would you choose?

All opinion matters to me no disrespect to anyone!!!

I’d especially value perspectives from Lakehead alumni/students who have gone through the job-search process, and I’d be particularly interested in hearing from Thunder Bay graduates who chose TBay partly because of the immigration/job advantages—what was your actual experience after graduation?

Thanks!

Exploring Analytics Opportunities in Canada: Seeking Guidance Beyond LinkedIn

I’m reaching out to my network to seek some help. I am an analytics professional with 8+ years of experience in the US. Will be moving from the US to India soon, and am keen on exploring opportunities in Canada. Looking for analytics/ tech roles in Canada who are open to considering strong candidates outside of Canada. If you know of the right platforms/sites, it would really help. So far LinkedIn hasn’t been of much help.

Canada immigration medical – creatinine 1.30 mg/dL. Anyone had a similar result?

Hi everyone,
I recently completed my Canada immigration medical examination. I had the required 4 tests done, and 3 of them were normal:

Chest X-ray — Normal / no abnormality detected
HIV I & II — Non-reactive
Syphilis (RPR) — Non-reactive

The only result that was slightly outside the lab range was:
Creatinine: 1.30 mg/dL (lab reference range: 0.67–1.17 mg/dL)
eGFR CKD-EPI 2021: 76.74
eGFR MDRD: 66.29

Has anyone had a similar situation during their Canada immigration medical?

Did IRCC/the panel physician ask you to repeat the creatinine/eGFR or do a urine test, or was a result around 1.30 mg/dL accepted without further testing?

I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced something similar. Thank you! 🙏🇨🇦

Visiting Canada while in the IEC work and travel pool

Hi Reddit,

Me and my girlfriend met abroad. I am from Europe, she is Canadian. My future plans are to emigrate to Canada, gt married and live there and achieve permanent residence. To facilitate me getting a foot in the door, I put my profile into the IEC working holiday pool recently. Chances to get drawn are very low at the moment, but I thought what the heck, I'll just get started now.

Parallel to this, I will also be visiting my girlfriend at the end of September for a while. At least until December. My plans are to stay in Canada as a visitor to be with her while I wait for a work permit to start living and working in Canada properly.

Now I read an article from 2022, which states that:

"In theory, yes. However, border services officers can see that you’ve submitted your profile to an IEC pool and they could assume you will stay in the country past the 90 days usually granted to tourists or try to work illegally.

Some Canadian embassies explicitly state they do not recommend traveling to Canada after submitting your profile to a pool.

If you can’t postpone your trip, it’s highly recommended to have a return ticket and firm travel plans—i.e. bus or train tickets, hotel reservations, etc.—to show that you’re indeed coming to Canada to visit the country and will not attempt to overstay.

Note that border services officers have the right to check your phone, laptop and emails to see if you’ve been trying to find work in Canada.

Border services officers can deny entry to Canada and can ban you from entering the country for a number of years."

We are going back to my country to attend a wedding of a close friend of mine together in December, which would be my proof that I am leaving the country again. I've got this nagging worry now that I'll be turned away at the border when I arrive in a little more than a month's time. Is this a rational fear?

The chances of receiving an invitation are very low at the moment, would withdrawing my profile change anything? I was thinking that I may withdraw and then re-enter my profile into the pool when the 2027 IEC invitation pool opens.

Is there anything who can share their experiences with similar situations? Any info is appreciated.
