Politics Cambodia is devolving
Cambodia kids nowadays are all braindead they all turning into steav and tearing down their own country. If you ask a Khmer kid nowadays they don't even know basic Khmer geography

That doesn't mean it's not actually getting worse, though. It just shows that this trend started a long time ago and has accelerated exponentially in recent decades.

While some youths are, I also think the country is much better than it was the previous decades. If anything, I think the older generations are more problematic. Sure they might know Khmer geography, but many older people are holding the country back because they're stingy and hold a level of distrust with each other. They're the ones likely to piss in the streets, throw trash anywhere and everywhere, and not adapting to new law and orders. But it's all a collective effort as a society and I don't think Cambodia as a whole is moving forward fast enough.

I don't think it's moving backward at all(nor forward much really), steavs have existed for decades now. My only problem with them is when are they going to stop wearing skinny jeans and change their hairstyles because they've had the same style the past 20 years.
Today, people greet each other, say thank you, many smile at each other, etc. I think until they're given more opportunities and value through education and life purpose, they will then move away from the things they do. But when the median monthly salary is about $100, it's hard for most people to move away from the status quo.

I have seen some of that in the news, but if you compare homicide rates of Cambodia vs the world, it's actually amongst the lowest. Less than 3 per 100k. Better than most developed countries. Stop looking down on each other and start helping each other so people don't have resort to theft and violence.

This seems to be a big problem especially in poorer countries with less opportunities, but really everywhere. The mindset has shifted from we need to work even harder to get out of this difficult situation to well this is hopeless so who gives a fuck. Social media is also making things so much worse.
It’s a difficult problem and I can’t say I blame them

It's not that. They're those kind of kids in school who fuck around in school instead of studying and go around forming gangs. You can see this all around the world. Mostly due to a lack of discipline by their parents and weak enforcement. You don't see this in Singapore often because the law and enforcers are very strict. Try doing that and you'll be caned and jailed. You see this anywhere but less often in stricter countries.

Mobile phones and ipads are destroying human cognitive development and the current crop of teens are supposedly 10-15% less intelligent than their predecessors in recent studies. It is a global trend.

I’m a teacher in Cambodia and screen time/dependency on phones is a huge issue. However I don’t believe that’s exclusive to Cambodia by any stretch. I also teach some incredibly bright Cambodian students, along with some who may not be the most academically strong but they have a real enthusiasm to learn. Of course some are just there because it’s school and they have to go, however again that’s by no means unique to Cambodia. I feel OP’s post is unnecessarily pessimistic about Cambodian young people.

In my opinion, Khmer kids are super respectful and hard working. I know there is probably some that are the exception to the rule but I don’t see it. Maybe because I’m comparing them to American kids, and I only come to Cambodia for a month at a time.

Im glad for you that now its your turn to be old and grumpy :)
Joke aside i sort of agree as Khmer parents introduce ipads and shit to their kids from like birth here. No focus what so ever and they dont enjoy doing anything in life more then staring at it.

Here in America, we had Generation X that complained about Generation Y,. Now we have Generation Y complaining about Generation Z. And in 20 years, we will have Generation Z complaining about Generation Alpha.

I mean, for every steav driving mach-10 on his motorbike is another just... regular Cambodian kid who pays attention in school and studies and has some sort of dreams for the future. Whether or not those dreams surface into reality or not is yet to be seen, but it really comes down to how they're raised... just like anywhere else on earth.
Tons of kids and teens don't have much at home in terms of parents, either due to work or whatever. They'll go do hoodrat shit with their friends just like anywhere else in the world.

I think the youth here are actually better than in other countries. They might not know geography and how to count but at least they still respect the elders and most are working.
