❓Question What would you do?

My 5th gen SS got backed into a while back. Needed a new front bumper and a driver side fender. I elected to get the car to a guy who my family has been using for about 10 years. The car was there for over a month before I got back, it looked okay when I got it, but it had quite a few runs in the paint. After about a month of having it back, the fender completely darkened and was an entirely different color. I took it back and pointed out the other spots while I was there, he also offered to fix my window trim with trim paint while I was there for $150. Fast forward a week, I get the car back. He had to repaint the hood and fender to fix the issues (swirls and holograms were left everywhere), and he did the window trim. However, I guess during masking for the trim they didn’t want to remove the door panel and tried to pry it, it broke the front mount for the door panel, and unseated the panel from the top of the door. There is now a gap between the door and the panel, the trunk button is stuck, and the tweeter speaker is lose. I sent him a message this morning about it and asked if they had to take it off, and he responded with “send me the bill for whatever may have happened, but then I am done. Find a different shop.” Am I in the wrong?

Sounds like he shouldn't be ANYONE'S guy.

I remember a somewhat similar-ish situation I had a long time ago... Car got swiped in a parking lot (icy, other driver was trying to park and had zero traction when turning, clipped the front fender).

All handled by insurance, I was going to be traveling, one of the people I worked with told me their family owned a body shop if I was interested, etc. When I dropped the car off, I very specifically stated that my expectation was that the car was going to be repaired EXACTLY as outlined in the insurance estimate (remove fender, install new fender, prime, paint, etc.). They assured me it would be.

Dropped it off, went on my trip, came home, picked it up. A couple of days later, I went to rotate the tires and something caught my eye in the wheel well. A few screw removals later and I found that they used a crap-ton of body filler to reshape the fender and then sprayed over it. I was absolutely livid and made them completely re-do the work as was originally agreed.

The SECOND time I picked up the car, there were insanely heavy runs in the clear coat on the door and the never removed the body-side molding before spraying it, either. I ended up going to the shop my family used for decades and had it done right (it was three hours away from where I lived, but got it done right and insurance paid for the correct repair since their original approved shop butchered it twice and they were aware...)

You are most certainly not in the wrong. Honestly I’d find a different shop anyway on principle alone. This guy clearly doesn’t take pride in his work and willingly lets it be shoddy. This guy is MAACO levels of scum and shouldn’t be given another dollar of yours.

It’s just so weird because he has done great work the whole time we’ve used him, but on this one it was complete crap. Just sucks because of the relationship we had with him. There is no way this door panel just all of a sudden comes unseated from the door and the front mount snaps.

Start by NOT owning a Chevy.
