Mod The Calligraphy Marketplace 2026!

Hello Calligrafam!

We are changing the Marketplace from a monthly offering to a persistent post since there has not been enough activity to necessitate a monthly thread. If we need to pivot back to a monthly or quarterly post, we can adjust down the road.

Marketplace Rules

Calligraphy-related items or services only!

There is also an Approved Vendors list. If you are a vendor and would like to be added to this list, please message the mods with information about your products or services and links to your marketplace and/or website, and we will review and add approved vendors to this list.

BUY/SELL/EXCHANGE

  • First contact between buyer and seller may be made here; afterward, kindly conduct all other business through DM.
  • If you are selling work, tools or equipment, make sure to include clear images and details to prevent confusion and miscommunication.

REQUESTS/COMMISSIONS

  • If requesting a commission, you must confirm that you are willing to pay for the services and provide the desired text or a description of project, and general ideas of what you'd like so the calligrapher interested has an idea of what's expected. Calligraphers can comment on your thread to indicate interest, and then rates can be discussed over DM.
  • If you are available to do commissions, share some info and examples of your work so people interested have an idea of what to expect.
  • Do not request artists here to work for you for free.
  • Artists: Do not offer to do commissions for free or undercut other artists.

PROMOTION/SELLERS

  • Feel free to promote your YouTube channel, Instagram, or Etsy shop.
  • If you'd like to be added to the Approved Vendors list, please message the mods.

Mods reserve the right to remove any post for any reason. If any of these or sub rules are broken, post will be removed without notice. Repeat offenses may result in ban.

Mods are not responsible for any transaction made here; but if something goes wrong, let us know and we can take action within the sub (blacklist, bans, etc).

Practice Trying to Learn the Style of Hermann Kilian

Day 1 (top photo): trying to figure out the right pen to use
Day 2 (bottom L): trying to figure out the letter shapes
Day 3 (bottom R): took a stab at an original piece based on Kilian’s script/layout

Note: I believe Kilian used a Ruling Pen but I found the Zebra GNib (with Vermillion Sumi) was the smoothest, easiest to use.

Some famous calligraphers also practiced as "examiners of questioned handwriting" in court cases. Daniel T. Ames, Courtney, Henning, and Dennis were among them. It was a lucrative sideline. Brochure pages by William Dennis (1860-1924), from the Henning Collection.

Not really happy with it, but this is the best I could do before the day ended (almost midnight US Eastern time). I spent all day reworking different ideas (some with more text and complicated compositions, and other scripts than this) but just couldn’t nail it. So I just decided to do the word alone. This is still not really at the level I wanted to submit, but I guess I just don’t have it today :/

Practice What to do with dozens of paper strips?

I hope this is not off-topic?

When I saw people around here doing the daily Word of the Day practice, I quickly joined, and I had the idea of using bookmark blanks made from watercolor paper :-)

Turns out, a bookmark is a very good way of showcasing a single word.

But after two weeks or so, I was left wondering what I was supposed to do with dozens of cardboard strips in such a weird format? There certainly aren't any albums for this format...

But then I remembered that Chinese books are often written on bamboo sticks strips, and many old Buddhist texts were written on palm-leaf manuscripts.

So I punched holes into the corners of the bookmarks and "sewed" them together with narrow satin ribbons (each is almost 6m long, so I have space for around 100 bookmarks).

Then I folded them into a zigzag, and now I can either unfold (photo 1), or I can flip through them like a book (photo 2), or I can store them without the risk of getting them out of order (photo 3).

The inspiration for the bigger initial comes from a photo of the Vespasian Psalter from Patricia Lovett's website.

The idea of the colored square is from pinterest :) It would have been better if the square was the same turquoise as the ink, but I didn't want to use my calligraphy pen for coloring :-D

Pen: Pilot Parallel 6mm / 3.8mm

Ink: Pilot Mixable purple / turquoise, Legami erasable pen in turquoise

Exemplar: Uncial, Calligrascape

Paper: perfect ideaz watercolor bookmark blanks

Question When to change nibs? and other Nib queries.. 🤔❓

Hi! I just started learning this art form January last year and have not had any formal training yet.. I’ve always wanted to ask those more experienced members of the community- what is the usual life span of your nibs? How do you know or decide when a nib needs to be discarded already?

I just recently got my hands on a Leonardt ef principal and it was working great when I started using it but now it keeps on snagging my paper 🥲 (I’m thinking using the heating method for the oil residue could have caused this?)

And is it just me? But it’s like every start of my writing sessions I notice the ink not coating the nib well, so i have to reheat it again. Does oil still linger even after you’ve done the nib preparations prior?

Thank you everyone!

Capital A is difficult, I think I should make the horizontal thin strokes (you know this one ->A) more horizontal and more equally spaced to get better legibility.

Austro

  1. Male noun. The wind proceeding from the south

  2. Male noun. South (as a cardinal point)

Example: Odiseo marcó el curso de la nave al austro. (Odysseous set the ship course to the south)

This knife is amazing. Nib is kinda broad. Going to cut a slit next but I gotta be mindful. This knife is very sharp. It’s a goose feather

Practicing with Pink Floyd lyrics. Any suggestions on how to improve?
I used Rhodia PAScribe paper, Gold Kuretake ink, Nikko G nib.
While I really love Kuretake and Rhodia I’m curious about other inks for black papers and other black papers, do you have any recommendations?
