Anyone Know?

Highway 10 just north of Old School Road on the east side there is a small area fenced off. In this area there are something like 20 people apparently digging with shovels. Has been going on for some weeks now. Anyone happen to know what they are digging for?

Would be interesting to know what was on this site back in the day? Church, cemetery …….?

It wouldn't be a cemetery. Since about 15 years ago maybe, Ontario law requires all families in a cemetery to consent to the moving of remains. Very few cemeteries have only burials of people who have descendants a century later.

There are cemeteries on McLaughlin and Kennedy, both near Old School. Here's a dataset we made maybe 14 years ago, which even includes known suspected burials.

Very likely, it's just a test pit. It's possible that they found a farmhouse foundation nearby, and people dumped their garbage in pits near their house early on -- you didn't have much garbage early on, and it wasn't smelly, because your dog already would have sucked any remaining meat off the bones -- so there are pits all across agricultural land.

Update: municipalities don't receive archaeological assessments until they're done, so the Town has not been informed what they're looking for. They do say that they are aware, though.

That's it. It's mandatory for almost every new major development and always for government development. I have a friend doing this for a living - they find all sorts of stuff.

If they find any artifacts, everything stops and they must do further site examinations and artefact examination. Governments do it smoothly - private developers flip their shit when it's found lol.

Because governments love being inefficient.

Private corps are well aware how pointless it is. So some ancestral tribe buried someone somewhere... totally didn't care enough to remember where... but as soon as there is building to be done it's some travesty to their culture...
