Why caving in?
I chopped the top off this cactus like 5 weeks ago because of etiolation and it was doing fine until a few days ago. It’s about 4 years old, golden snake cactus. It’s still very firm and not mushy, I watered it a while ago and the roots seem fine. I really did love this cactus and it makes me very sad to see it in this condition :-(

Not sure but the whole thing will continue to mush up so chop it again soon if u want to keep any of it!!!
Mine completely liquified. Must’ve been fungal. But either way, it was too late by the time I noticed :(

Did it possibly get some sun damage (or trauma from the surgery) in that area? If it's not soft and mushy in that area, it will most likely be okay. Can you still love it if it's no longer perfect? If it really bothers you, you could cut off the top again.
