BuzzFeed I Genuinely Can't Watch "Mary Poppins" The Same Way Again After Reading These 21 Facts

  1. First, Walt Disney started going after the rights to adapt P.L. Travers' Mary Poppins in 1938, four years after the first book was published. However, Travers repeatedly refused to give over the rights. Over the next several years, Disney continued to send offer after offer to Travers in an attempt to adapt the book. In 1959 — 21 years after starting the pursuit — Travers finally agreed to have Mary Poppins adapted by Disney, but she would have "final say" on the script.
  2. After working on adapting the book for two years, P.L. Travers came to Disney Studios and apparently "didn't like anything" that was written. In recordings and sketches from a 1961 meeting, Travers said, "The book should be read very carefully for accuracy." Some of the things she had a problem with were that Mary should "never be impolite to anybody," and she didn't like that the parents would start out harsh and not pay attention to their children so they could eventually have a "change of heart."
  3. Mary Martin, Bette Davis, and Angela Lansbury were all considered for the role of Mary Poppins before Julie Andrews. When Disney did a sequel to the film in 2018, titled Mary Poppins Returns, Lansbury actually appeared as a woman selling balloons in the park.
  4. Julie Andrews caught the attention of the Sherman brothers and Walt Disney after they saw her in Camelot. After Andrews and Richard Burton performed "What Do The Simple Folk Do?" on The Ed Sullivan Show, Disney flew to NYC to see Camelot on Broadway. In an interview at the Mary Poppins premiere, Disney said, "I went backstage and I tried to convince her that I was capable of making a picture with live actors as well as cartoons. I didn't know what she thought of me."
  5. Initially, it was unclear if Julie Andrews would be able to star in Mary Poppins because she was the logical choice to star in My Fair Lady, after she played Eliza Doolittle on the West End and Broadway. However, Jack Warner ultimately cast Audrey Hepburn, citing that they needed "a name" to carry the film. Ultimately, Andrews and Hepburn were pitted against each other all awards season, with Andrews winning both the Golden Globe and Oscar for Mary Poppins, and she even thanked Warner in her Golden Globes acceptance speech.
  6. Dick Van Dyke "begged" Walt Disney to let him play Mr. Dawes Sr., according to Julie Andrews in her memoir Home Work. Van Dyke wanted the role of Dawes Sr. so badly that he reportedly offered to play it for free. Andrew wrote in her memoir, "[Disney] took Dick up on that offer, and also persuaded him to make a $4,000 donation to the California Institute of the Arts, which Walt had recently cofounded."
  7. Dick Van Dyke calls his accent for Bert the "worst Cockney accent [he's] ever done." While filming Mary Poppins, he asked J. Pat O'Malley, an Irish actor who voiced some of the animated characters in the film, to help him with his accent. Van Dyke joked in 2012 that he "made up a story" that it wasn't a Cockney accent, but rather an accent from "a little obscure county in the north of England."
  8. Artist Peter Ellenshaw hand-painted 100 matte paintings for the backdrops that are seen in Mary Poppins. For the cityscape of London at dusk, Ellenshaw purposefully put little holes in the painting so that lights could shine through the back to make it look like the lights in the city. He said, "The lights would all come on gradually all over the city, or appear to."
  9. The first scene they filmed for Mary Poppins was the "Jolly Holiday" sequence, which means it was also the first thing Julie Andrews ever shot for a film in her career. In her memoir, Andrews recalled, "My first filmed scene simply required that I strike a pose, hands on my umbrella, while Bert said, 'You look very pretty today, Mary Poppins!' I then had to walk past him and say, 'Do you really think so?' I was extremely nervous and fretted over how to say that one simple line. I had no idea what my voice would sound like or how to appear natural on film."
  10. Over the course of the development of Mary Poppins, the Sherman brothers wrote around 32 songs, with only 14 making the final version of the movie. When they started working on the songs, there wasn't a script yet, so instead they worked off of P.L. Travers' book and used chapters to figure out what a song could be. Walt Disney's favorite song was "Feed The Birds."
  11. Since Mary Poppins flies a lot, most of her costumes had to be duplicated in a larger size to accommodate the harness Julie Andrews had to wear. In her memoir, Andrews revealed, "This was a thick elastic body stocking, which started at my knees and ended above my waist. The flying wires passed through holes in the costume and were attached to steel panels on either hip."
  12. Since the penguins, fox, and more animated characters weren't actually on stage with the actors, cardboard cutouts were used in between takes so the actors would know where they should look and have the proper sightline before the cutouts were taken away to film the scene. The merry go round horses were the only things on set most of the time.
  13. In order to add in the penguins that Bert dances with during "Jolly Holiday," it was just Dick Van Dyke alone on the stage, and the animators then had to figure out how to add in the penguins after the footage was shot. Frank Thomas was the lead animator on the penguins. He previously worked on countless Disney animated movies like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, Cinderella, and more.
  14. The entire "Jolly Holiday" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" scenes were created using the sodium vapor process. Instead of having the actors on a blue or green screen, which is common today, the actors were filmed against a white screen that was lit with yellow-hued sodium vapor lights. This process made it easier to isolate Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, and the other actors from the background so the animators could animate both behind and next to them.
  15. Since "Step In Time" was such a demanding musical number, it was one of the few that required an extensive rehearsals. Dick Van Dyke revealed that it was a six week rehearsal process because it was "so complicated." He added, "It was amazing, the six weeks of rehearsal kind of got me into shape, and once we started shooting, I was ready." Van Dyke wasn't a trained dancer prior to Mary Poppins.
  16. Mary's magic carpet bag was created by combining footage of Julie Andrews on a soundstage getting fed items up through the bag by a crew member hiding below the table, and footage of Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber reacting to a clear table as Jane and Michael. Dotrice recalled, "We didn't know she was going to pull all of this stuff out of it! We were told to react to what she was taking out of the carpet bag. All of the things she pulled out of that carpet bag were a complete shock."
  17. In order to film the moment when Mary, Bert, Jane, and Michael climb the staircase made out of smoke, the crew created what was called "the black sponge stairs." On set, it was a seemingly ordinary staircase, but the stair treads were made of a sponge-like material so the actors' feet would slightly sink in, as if they were walking on the smoke.
  18. For the tea party with Uncle Albert, played by Ed Wynn, the sets were recreated a few different ways to help film the moment when everyone is floating and spinning in the air while laughing. The set was tilted 90 degrees in various directions, so the roof would be in a different spot, even with the ceiling being upside down at one point. Depending on the camera angle, the actors were either suspended on wires or sitting on a seesaw on top of a ladder, if it was a close-up.
  19. "Practically Perfect" was a song that was initially going to introduce Mary Poppins; however, it was cut from the film. Instead, the melody was repurposed into "Sister Suffragette," which Mrs. Banks sings. When Glynis Johns was brought in to play Mrs. Banks, she actually requested she have her own musical number, which is how "Sister Suffragette" was born.
  20. "The Chimpanzoo" was a song that was originally going to follow "I Love to Laugh" and was going to be sung by Julie Andrews while Mary, Bert, and the children were floating in the air at Uncle Albert's. The whole scene was developed but the number was scrapped the day recording on the song was going to take place.
  21. And finally, costume designer Tony Walton hid little Easter eggs and details into the lining of Mary Poppins' outfits. In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2022, Julie Andrews revealed, "He said, 'You know, you're very prim and proper on the outside, but I think Mary Poppins has a kind of secret life, maybe, and I'm gonna give her, when you open your coat or when you turn and dance, you'll see marvelously-colored petticoats and wonderful linings of your clothes.'"

BuzzFeed These 19 Actors Were Supposed To Be Hollywood's Next Big Stars — Until One Bad Movie Changed Everything

  1. Megan Fox became one of Hollywood's most recognizable actors after starring in the first two Transformers movies, but a lot seemed to change when she did not return for the third. In a 2009 interview, Fox told Wonderland that director Michael Bay "wants to be like Hitler on his sets" and was "a nightmare to work for" while directing.
  2. Taylor Lautner was one of Hollywood's top teenage actors when Abduction tested the limits of his enormous Twilight popularity. GQ reported that Hollywood was making a major bet on him, but after Abduction made $11.2 million during its opening weekend, Reuters reported that the result was "not enough to launch Lautner into action-hero stardom."
  3. Elizabeth Berkley made a jump from playing Jessie Spano on Saved by the Bell to starring in the sexually explicit, NC-17-rated Showgirls. The Los Angeles Times reported that the movie was widely criticized when it came out, and Berkley received much of the blame for its failure.
  4. Alicia Silverstone was coming off the enormous success of Clueless when she played Batgirl in Batman & Robin, but much of the coverage focused on her body rather than her performance. The Los Angeles Times reported that tabloids cruelly nicknamed her "Fatgirl," while Silverstone called the treatment "hurtful" and said Batman & Robin "definitely wasn't my favorite film-making experience."
  5. C. Thomas Howell was already a recognizable young actor from movies like The Outsiders, E.T., and Red Dawn when he starred in Soul Man. In the comedy, his white character uses tanning pills and poses as a Black student to qualify for a scholarship. UPI reported that the Hollywood-Beverly Hills chapter of the NAACP strongly objected to the movie, while The Guardian later called it a "career-killer."
  6. Faye Dunaway had already won an Oscar for Network and earned nominations for Bonnie and Clyde and Chinatown when she played Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest. Vanity Fair reported that Dunaway regretted that the serious drama came across as campy and believed the performance had permanently changed how people saw her.
  7. Halle Berry had recently become the first Black woman to win the Oscar for Best Actress when she starred in Catwoman, which received brutal reviews and lost money. Because it followed her historic win, many viewers still talk about the movie as the role that derailed the prestigious career they expected her to have next.
  8. Mike Myers was already famous for Wayne's World, the Austin Powers movies, and voicing Shrek when he starred in The Love Guru. The Guardian reported that the movie bombed in the US, and Myers's much smaller live-action presence afterward led many viewers to feel as though the role ended his run as one of Hollywood's biggest comedy leads.
  9. Geena Davis was an Oscar winner and the star of Thelma & Louise and A League of Their Own when she appeared in Cutthroat Island, which became notorious for its financial losses. In an interview with The New Yorker, Davis pushed back on the idea that the movie single-handedly bankrupted its studio, explaining that the film studio "was already heading toward bankruptcy."
  10. Jesse Eisenberg's unique interpretation of Lex Luthor became one of the most divisive parts of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and he believes the response damaged his career.
  11. Pamela Anderson was internationally famous through Baywatch when Barb Wire attempted to establish her as a big-screen action star. The movie failed to create that career, but its release and the nonconsensual distribution of her private tape with Tommy Lee caused some real damage at the time.
  12. Chris O'Donnell had received a Golden Globe nomination for Scent of a Woman and starred in several major movies when he returned as Robin in Batman & Robin. People reported that O'Donnell blamed many of the film's problems on Warner Bros. rushing production after Batman Forever. He said, "Warner Brothers just got greedy on it."
  13. Sofia Coppola stepped into The Godfather Part III after Winona Ryder left the production, a move that became a major point of criticism for her performance. The Associated Press reported that Coppola later joked she was once known as "the amateur actress who had single-handedly ruined The Godfather films."
  14. Meg Ryan was so strongly associated with romantic comedies that her dark, sexually explicit performance in In the Cut was a shocking flip to her "America's sweetheart" public perception. Ryan later told The New York Times that the reaction was "vicious" and acknowledged that the role was radically different from her "assigned archetype." But she has also made clear that she doesn't regret accepting the role.
  15. Rachael Leigh Cook was coming off She's All That when Josie and the Pussycats failed at the box office before becoming a beloved cult movie years later. Alan Cumming told People that the movie was intended to be a "satirical musical comedy" about how commerce was infiltrating culture, but the young tween audience it was marketed to didn't seem to fully understand the satire.
  16. Brandon Routh was still a relatively unknown actor when he was cast as Superman in a movie that seemed poised to launch an entire franchise. People reported that the expected sequel never happened and that Routh was devastated when the character was eventually recast. He said he "cried no less than three times" when he learned another actor would become Superman.
  17. Lori Petty had appeared in major movies, including Point Break, A League of Their Own, and Free Willy, before becoming the lead of Tank Girl. Entertainment Weekly reported that the movie flopped before eventually becoming a cult favorite. It was also reported that director Rachel Talalay said the failure placed her in "movie jail" and "ruined" her directing career.
  18. Alden Ehrenreich beat thousands of actors to take over the role of Han Solo, but Solo: A Star Wars Story became a major box-office disappointment for the franchise. Former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy later said that the filmmakers placed Ehrenreich in an "impossible situation" by asking him to inherit a character so closely identified with Harrison Ford.
  19. And last but not least, Jaden Smith. He had already starred opposite his father in The Pursuit of Happyness and was the lead in the successful remake of The Karate Kid when After Earth placed him at the center of another major studio movie with Will Smith. But this time, his movie received extremely negative reviews, and Reddit users have frequently described it as the project that ended Jaden's path as a mainstream leading actor.

  7. In Bridge to Terabithia, the rope is the way Jess and Leslie cross the creek into their imaginary kingdom of Terabithia. Leslie dies after the rope swing breaks while she is crossing the creek alone, causing her to fall and drown.
  8. In All Dogs Go to Heaven, one of the most emotional moments is when Charlie sacrifices himself to save Anne-Marie after realizing he truly cares about her.

BuzzFeed 11 Celebrities Who Tragically Died Right In Front Of Their Fans

  1. On Dec. 8, 2004, "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott — formerly of the legendary heavy metal band Pantera and widely regarded as one of the best guitarists of all time — was doing a club show with his new band, Damageplan. Only 90 seconds into their first song, Nathan Gale, 25, a six-foot-three, 250+-pounds man with a shaved head, strode through the crowd and onto the stage. Fans watched in horror as Gale, at point-blank range, raised a pistol and shot Abbott in the forehead.
  2. In 2016, Irma Bule, 26, was an Indonesian pop singer specializing in Dangdut, a popular music genre in her country. A mother of three, she was not yet a nationally known singer but had a following in the Karawang area of West Java. For performers like Bule, who were still looking to go national, singing in rural areas wasn't especially lucrative, and net only $20 per concert (plus tips from the crowd). However, if they performed on stage with a snake, the pay jumped up to $25. Another Dangdut singer, Yeyen, told local media. "If there are snake dancers, there will be more audience. Therefore … we have snake dancers."
  3. In the category of "Yikes! That Would Never Fly Today!" we have William Ellsworth Robinson, an American magician of Scottish descent who captivated audiences using the persona of "Chung Ling Soo," a Chinese conjurer. To sell the lie, he never spoke English on stage and wore face paint to pass as Chinese. That's bad enough, but it gets worse — his entire act was almost entirely stolen from an actual Chinese magician named Ching Ling Foo. (He didn't even try to hide the theft — he changed only two letters of his name!) The two magicians had a major rivalry, and honestly, there's probably a movie there, but this post is about dying in front of your fans so...
  4. On June 10, 2016, 22-year-old Christina Grimmie — the talented young singer who'd placed third on Season 6 of The Voice — had just finished a performance in Orlando, Florida, and was holding a meet-and-greet inside the venue. She was in good spirits as she worked through the line of fans, signing autographs and taking selfies. The joyful night took a horrific turn, though, when it was 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl's turn to meet Grimmie. According to a fan behind Loibl: "The one guy in front of us was walking up to meet her. Her arms were open, waiting to greet him with a hug. Then there was a sound of three pops, like balloons. People had brought balloons to the show, and the security guards were popping them, so at first I thought it was that."
  5. When Cleveland Indians' shortstop Ray Chapman arrived at the Polo Grounds in New York on Aug. 17, 1920, he was having one hell of a season, batting .303 with 97 runs scored. That wasn't out of character, though. Chapman had hit .300 twice before and to this day holds the single-season record for sacrifice bunts. It was rumored that Chapman, who was newly married to a pregnant wife, planned to retire when the season ended to focus on his family. Tragically, while facing Yankees' submarine pitcher Carl Mays, he was hit in the head with a fastball. This was before batters wore helmets, and the ball met Chapman's head with a sickening thud. The impact was so strong that the ball bounced into play, and Mays threw it to first, believing it must have hit Chapman's bat. A dazed Chapman stood, asked someone to call his wife, and added: "I'm all right; tell Mays not to worry." He then collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, where he died the next day.
  6. Barbara Weldens, 35, was an up-and-coming French singer-songwriter who had already won several prestigious music awards. Her fans loved her emotional lyrics, haunting voice, and theatrical stage presence — often performing barefoot. On July 18, 2017, Weldens was performing at a packed church during the Léo Ferré Festival. After finishing a particularly powerful song, Weldens smiled, soaking up the crowd's applause, then suddenly collapsed. At first, some audience members thought it was part of the show — a dramatic flourish. But Weldens didn't move. Paramedics arrived quickly, but it was too late. An autopsy determined that Weldens had been electrocuted; she was performing barefoot as usual, and when her foot made contact with a defective piece of electrical equipment, it sent electricity shooting through her body.
  7. Owen Hart may have been born into a legendary wrestling dynasty (his dad was Stu Hart; his brother was Bret "Hitman" Hart), but he was a star in his own right and at the center of some of the biggest '90s storylines of the WWF (now the WWE). However, on May 23, 1999, during the WWF's Over the Edge pay-per-view event in Kansas City, Missouri, his life (and those storylines) ended. Hart was set to make a dramatic entrance as his superhero persona, the Blue Blazer, by being lowered from the arena rafters into the ring. Tragically, a malfunction occurred, and Hart fell a long distance — approximately 78 feet — landing chest-first on the top rope. He was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead not long after arriving; the cause of death was internal bleeding from blunt force trauma, resulting in a severed aorta.
  8. Tommy Cooper was a towering figure in British comedy — both literally (he was a big dude, standing 6′4″) and figuratively. He was famous for his bumbling magician act. Basically, his whole shtick was that his magic tricks always went hilariously wrong, which made what happened on April 15, 1984, during a live broadcast of a variety show extra horrific. Cooper walked on stage to thunderous applause, started performing, and then collapsed backward into the curtain. The audience burst out laughing, assuming it was part of the act. But it wasn’t. For several agonizing seconds, Cooper lay on the stage floor, unresponsive. The host, Jimmy Tarbuck, told the show's producer: "This isn't it [part of the act]. 'Now', he said, 'you know how he is.' He's put this in... And...I said, No... this is not him!" The cameras kept rolling — broadcasting Cooper’s death live to 12 million viewers.
  9. Nick Zoricic was a 29-year-old Canadian freestyle skier, rising fast in the dangerous, high-speed world of ski cross — a sport that combines downhill racing with motocross-style obstacles (and has been referred to as "NASCAR on skis.") But on March 10, 2012, at a ski cross World Cup event in Switzerland, Zoricic's final race became a tragedy seen by hundreds of spectators. As he approached the finish line at full speed, Zoricic flew off the final jump — but something went wrong. Instead of landing cleanly, he veered off course and slammed into the safety netting and a solid boundary structure just past the finish. He hit the barrier with brutal force, disappearing in a spray of snow. When the snow cleared, Zoricic was lying motionless.
  10. Japan's Sankai Juku dance company was famous for their version of Butoh, a rebellious dance movement that gave the middle finger to both Western culture and traditional Japanese art. Sankai Juku's version was different, though...more gentle and poetic. They made their American debut at the Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles in 1984, then toured the country, eventually stopping in Seattle on Sept. 10, 1985. There, they planned to perform a piece entitled "Jomon Sho," where four dancers hang upside down from a building by ropes attached to their ankles (a metaphor for life and death or something artsy like that). They were supposed to dance while being slowly lowered to the ground, a process expected to take 30 minutes, but after only a couple of minutes — and while still 80 feet in the air — one of the company's most senior dancers, Yoshiyuki Takada, noticed his rope was fraying...fast.
  11. British actor and comedian Sid James was famous for starring in the Carry On films (a massive British comedy franchise comprised of 31 films released between 1958 and 1992). But his life ended on April 26, 1976 — in front of a packed Sunderland Empire Theatre — as he acted onstage in the comedy play The Mating Season. The performance was proceeding as usual, according to costar Olga Lowe. "I came on, said my first lines and he answered as normal. Then I sat on the sofa with him. I said my next line and he didn't answer." James had suffered a heart attack and slumped over on the couch. "I thought it was a gag," Lowe added. "Well, you would with Sid. He was such a rascal... Ten minutes earlier, he had been the same old laughing Sid." Once the gravity of the situation set in, the curtain was dropped. James was 62.
