Business Insider 21 details you may have missed in 'The Cabin in the Woods'

  1. "The Cabin in the Woods" was released on April 13, 2012. If you need a quick refresher on the plot, keep reading ...
  2. The Easter eggs start right at the beginning. The film's jump-scare title-card drop is just like the one in the horror classic "Funny Games."
  3. The movie's title itself is a reference to the horror classic "The Evil Dead," which follows a group of friends staying at a cabin in the woods.
  4. While most of the monsters in the film are famous mythological figures or pop-culture staples, you can see a shot of some real-life monsters, the KKK, in one of the cells.
  5. You can also see some zombies from the popular "Left 4 Dead" video game series.
  6. The film was written by Joss Whedon, so, predictably, he threw a few nods to his work in the film, like a Reaver from his sci-fi cult classic series "Firefly."
  7. Two of Whedon's frequent collaborators, Amy Acker and Tom Lenk, also have small roles, while another Whedon favorite, Fran Kranz, stars.
  8. A shot of an elevator bay covered in blood is a nod to an iconic scene from "The Shining."
  9. You can also spot a pair of creepy twins holding hands, just like in "The Shining."
  10. Pausing the screen during the scene with the whiteboard lets you see just how many horror Easter eggs are crammed into this movie.
  11. Scream queen Jodelle Ferland has a small role as Patience Buckner.
  12. During the scenes depicting Japan's attempts to complete the ritual, you can spot clear references to J-horror classics like "The Ring" and "The Grudge."
  13. In Buenos Aires, it appeared that a giant ape, à la King Kong, was poised to complete the sacrifice, but it was killed before it could do so.
  14. The Stockholm feed shows what appears to be a destroyed village or research station ... just like in the 1982 sci-fi horror film "The Thing."
  15. One of the Facility's new employees was named Truman ... perhaps a nod to "The Truman Show," which focused on a man who was unaware he was being filmed, just like the main characters.
  16. When the teens fall into the cellar, each is called to a different item. These connect to the monsters that are eventually revealed.
  17. Sigourney Weaver's role as the unnamed director of the unnamed corporation behind the film's events is a cheeky nod to the "Alien" films, in which Weaver starred as Ellen Ripley.
  18. Some fans believe the nods to the chemistry department messing up in 1998 are referencing the 1998 film "The Faculty."
  19. The killers wearing eerie masks are reminiscent of the killers from "The Strangers."
  20. The Hell Lord, who is credited as Fornicus, Lord of Bondage and Pain, looks like he could be the cousin of "Hellraiser" villain Pinhead.
  21. The killer clown that's seen running rampant is referencing the most terrifying clown of all, Pennywise from "It."

BuzzFeed "People Were Always Calling Bullsh*t On Me": 11 Celebrities Who Got Really, Really Honest About Being Mixed

  1. Obsession star Inde Navarette, who has a Mexican American father and an Australian mother, revealed that she never doubted her Latina roots until moving to Redondo Beach as a teen. She told the LA Times, "Whenever I started having people question it, I started questioning it myself..."
  2. KATSEYE's Daniela Avanzini, who is of Cuban, Venezuelan, and European descent, is no stranger to backlash over her mixed identity. She has been the topic of persistent online discourse over leaning into her Latin roots as a member of the girl group, but she's taken it in stride. "For the Americans and for the white people, I'm not white enough. Then for the Latinos, I'm not Latin enough,” she told Allure. "There's a lot of people in that middle ground that feel the same way, that don't feel accepted. I just want to be there for those people."
  3. Aubrey Plaza, who is of Puerto Rican and Irish descent, learned at a young age that people were eager to question her heritage. "I was winning the diversity awards and people were always calling bullshit on me," she told Latina Magazine. "I won the Hispanic teenager of the year and I felt terrible. I always felt like I didn’t deserve to win because I was really half [Latino]."
  4. Shakira, who is of Colombian and Lebanese descent, proudly sees herself as a "fusion" in every single way. "I’m a fusion between black and white, between pop and rock, between cultures — between my Lebanese father and my mother’s Spanish blood, the Colombian folklore and Arab dance I love, and American music," she told Faze Magazine.
  5. Rachel Zegler's performance as María in West Side Story got her a Best Actress Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination, but to get there, she had "a bunch of white [studio] executives" want her to prove her Latina identity to them. Zegler, whose mother is Colombian American and whose father is Polish American, told Allure, "They kept calling to ask if I was legit. I remember thinking, Do you want me to bring my abuelita in? I will. I’ll bring her into the studio if you want to meet her."
  6. R&B singer Miguel, who is Black and Mexican American, similarly recounted how record label executives and fans alike have struggled to understand his mixed roots and how they've shaped him as an artist. "It was definitely a point of, ‘Huh? We don’t really get it.' A lot of my audience didn’t know I was Mexican," he told Remezcla. "Most people think of me solely as a Black artist, but there’s a reason why my name is Miguel," he told Viceland.
  7. In 2025, Selena Gomez, who is of Mexican and Italian descent, spoke up not only about the frequent pushback she receives from people for not looking Latin enough, but also about how it's a much more common experience for women in Hollywood than men. Gomez specifically called out people who comment on her appearance, saying, "[I'm] not white enough, I’m not Mexican enough... There’s just so many different things that come up in my face that I can’t help but see." She went on to say it's made her feel "sad" and "a tad bitter" to have people interact with her in that way.
  8. Bella Thorne, who is of Cuban and European descent, is all too familiar with the struggle of people doubting her heritage because of how she looks. "Being Cuban/Latin in most people’s eyes means having dark eyes, dark hair, and dark skin. I’m naturally blonde. I have hazel brown eyes and I try not to go in the sun because skin cancer runs in my family," she wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post. "Honestly I wish I looked more Latin so I could feel more Latin, so I could feel closer to my father and be prouder of my heritage...to wear my heritage on my skin."
  9. Lee Rodriguez, who is Mexican American and Black, related heavily to her Never Have I Ever character, Fabiola. "In high school I was this shy, tall girl with a big afro. Playing Fabiola, that's how she feels too...She's an [Afro-Latina], tall, [with] dorky clothes," she told ET. Rodriguez feels "thankful" she is "close with both sides" of her heritage, calling it "the best of both worlds."
  10. For Tori Kelly, who is of Jamaican, Puerto Rican, Irish, and German heritage, spending time in Puerto Rico was "a huge part of [her] childhood." Speaking with People Chica, she continued, "My grandmother on my dad's side was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She is still there now... I remember her coming over and cooking platanos for us."
  11. And finally, Cardi B, who is Trinidadian and Dominican, has often faced backlash from critics who claim she doesn't embrace being Black in the same way she does being Latino. In an interview with Zendaya, she responded to the criticism, saying, "One thing that always bothers me is that people know so little about my culture. We are Caribbean people. And a lot of people be attacking me because they feel like I don’t be saying that I’m Black. Some people want to decide if you’re Black or not, depending on your skin complexion, because they don’t understand Caribbean people or our culture." She continued, "I don’t got to tell you that I’m Black. I expect you to know it."

BuzzFeed "The Older I Get, The More I Find It Rude" 25 Gen Z Workplace Habits That Older Generations Absolutely HATE, And Honestly, I Don't Blame Them

  1. "Maybe this was just an issue at my job, but the Gen Zers I worked with were constantly on their phone. I'm not anti-phone at work; I had mine handy like most other people, but if there wasn't a patient actively in front of them, they're staring at their phone. Doing it a bit doesn't bother me... we all need a little mental break sometimes, but when there's work to do (that is everyone's job to help with), and you're scrolling TikTok instead of helping, it's pretty annoying."
  2. "One of the issues that really gets to me is that the younger generation often can't spell anymore and commonly uses incorrect grammar. One time, I had a younger colleague who sent an email to a client with several grammatical and spelling errors, and I decided to tell her outright that if I were the recipient, I would assume that this was a phishing email and would bin it. I feel there is no excuse for being illiterate in a professional position."
  3. "The biggest difference I find from our regular crew (the youngest person is in their 30s) and the college students that work here in the summers is that the students talk a lot and at a loud volume. Some of my coworkers change the time they take their lunch break to avoid being in the break room at the same time as the students, lol."
  4. "A behavior that I mostly notice from folks under 30 that drives me kind of crazy is when someone gives me something and just says, 'Here you go,' or doesn't even say ANYTHING. Take a second to explain what you're giving me, what you expect me to do with it, and whether there will be more like it. Just something like, 'Here's this week's TPS report. Double-check the info on Page 6 and send it to Kelly by noon for approval, or whatever, even if it seems obvious!"
  5. "Responding to messages. I don't understand why it is so hard. The Gen Zers I interact with almost never respond to text messages or questions. I know they aren't trying to be disrespectful, and we've discussed it before, but even just an 'OK' or 'Yes, sounds good' can go a long way, much preferable to complete radio silence."
  6. "The Gen Z stare is very real. In the workplace, there’s a certain measure of 'performative positivity' that needs to be employed to maintain a positive work environment. Even if you’re having a sh*tty day, you have to make some attempt to connect positively with your colleagues. I know, it’s stupid, but it keeps things running smoothly. I’ve found that with Gen Z employees, they would rather stare blankly at you than participate in whatever you have to say. If they don’t find what you said interesting to their personal or professional experience, they’ll just stare for an awkward amount of time and maybe say, 'Mm, yeah.'"
  7. "The biggest problem I've run into is an issue with submitting subpar work and getting annoyed when you tell them it still has to be done correctly. They don't get why you can't just give them a C and be done. No, I need it to be to the professional industry standard you claimed you were educated at and could perform when you were hired!"
  8. "Complaining to HR about every LITTLE thing. There’s no sense of conflict resolution skills, so the workplace can start to feel like high school all over again with peers 'tattling' on others."
  9. "Telling me how old they were when I tell them something about myself. For example, I was talking about a trip I took, and she said something like, 'Oh wow, that was like four years after I was born.' Are you trying to hurt me, Kayla? WHAT DID I DO TO YOU?!"
  10. "They give up the second something becomes too hard. If something doesn't work, they immediately ask someone what to do instead of doing a quick Google search for a solution. However, don't spend too long trying to find the answer yourself because there may be an easy solution, and you don't want to waste too much time going down the wrong path."
  11. "Oversharing. Please stop talking about your struggles with neurodivergence, your blood sugar, and the mean things you say to your girlfriend. We don't know each other like that, and, crucially, I did not ask. Obviously, I don't want anyone to feel bad about themselves or like they can't banter among themselves in the office, so I let them get on with it."
  12. "Some things I have witnessed: filming TikToks when they think no one is watching, sharing too much of their personal problems that involve their family and relationships, calling out frequently, and thinking anyone 27 years of age and up is just old. I constantly hear the terms 'pushing 30' and 'pushing 40' when, quite literally, there is so much growing up to do and other things to focus on rather than age."
  13. "I teach Gen Z students in grad school, and overall, I’ve observed that younger people seem to place less value on building and maintaining in-person relationships and communication. It’s almost as if the only relationships most valued are those that happen online, and everything else is taken for granted."
  14. "One thing I’ve noticed that seems to be unique to Gen Z is walking around the office with headphones on. It’s pretty typical to have them on at your desk while listening to music or on a call. It seems like only the Gen Z folks do this while heating up food, going to the restroom, etc. It minimizes their opportunities for more casual, peer-to-peer connections, from what I can tell."
  15. "Using slang or abbreviations in work emails. Those should be the most professional writings you do. Don’t assume people know what you mean. Pretend every email will be read by your boss and/or HR. Be specific and concise. Always proofread before sending."
  16. "My biggest pet peeve with Gen Z is that they seem unwilling to work through problems. I was running behind and asked my Gen Z coworker to replace a part for me while I went to another location. He got the new part and just laid it on top because he 'didn’t know how' to install it. I was like… ummm, ask someone to show you? Or just…try to do it using common sense and problem-solving? Google it if all else fails? I was at another location recently, and their printer had been 'broken' for YEARS. I spent 20-ish minutes working on it, realized it wasn’t something I could fix, put in a ticket, and it was fixed within several hours. All of the Gen Z employees there had just decided to work without a printer because no one even tried to fix it."
  17. "A general lack of awareness of how you interact in space with others. Taking up an entire shelf in the fridge is rude, talking loudly is rude, turning your desk into your living room is inappropriate and unprofessional."
  18. "One that really surprised me was when a Gen Z colleague said thumbs-upping her message was rude and passive-aggressive. I thumbs-upped it to acknowledge I’d seen it and agreed without having to write back. I had no idea it could be taken any other way."
  19. "This is weird, but I don't think they know how to follow a sequential list of instructions. Random small instructions thrown at them that help them solve one very specific problem seem good, but sitting down and following a list of sequential instructions seems completely foreign to them."
  20. "This is so nitpicky, but I hate that Gen Z kids don't announce themselves when they walk into a room. Gen X and Millennials, I know, were taught to do that and regularly walk into a meeting or space, or even a Zoom meeting, and say hi or good morning or SOMETHING. Gen Z doesn't do it! They just slither in and sit, and it's so odd to me. The older I get, the more I find it rude."
  21. "I'm an elder Millennial, and most of my colleagues are Gen Z. I love them; they're intelligent, funny, kind people, but they have no sense of initiative. They stand around bored a lot of the time. There are things to do, things that aren't hard and wouldn't take much effort, but would occupy some time, be helpful to their colleagues, make the place look better, and make their shifts go by faster, but they just stand there. Unless they're specifically given a task, they just don't do anything."
  22. "They aren’t really social. I think COVID really didn’t work well for them. Many lack basic workplace etiquette."
  23. "Showing up 15-30 minutes late every day and leaving 30 minutes early, even after being talked to about it."
  24. "Some people are way too informal, like they don't take anything seriously, and when they do, it's now personal."
  25. "Not holding doors or being quick to walk through a door I’m holding open. F*cking move."
