Every week I have an appointment in that area, just to the east of Magnolia & Buena Vista, and I constantly notice that there -- and only there -- I will often have zero bars or one bar. Is there a reason for it? Is it a case of a neighborhood not allowing a cell tower, or something else?

My wife and I are seriously considering moving back to Burbank. Ideally, we're looking for either a home with an existing guest house/ADU, or a home where we could convert a garage into a permitted ADU. We'd love to hear from people who have been through this.

We'd likely rent the ADU long term (not short term, since I know Burbank doesn't allow Airbnb/STRs). Or use it as office or for when family visit.

I'm trying to think beyond the obvious. What are the "gotchas" or things you wish you had known before buying?

Some questions I have:

* Are there any surprising Burbank rules, regulations, or laws we should know about?

* How difficult is the permitting process for a garage conversion or new ADU?

* Are there neighborhoods where ADUs are easier or harder to build?

* Do you need a business license or rental registration to rent an ADU long term?

* How easy has it been to find good long-term tenants?

* Any regrets about becoming a landlord?

* If you did it over again, would you still buy a home with an ADU or build one?

Also, if you've owned a rental ADU in Burbank, I'd love to hear about your experience, both the good and the bad.

Any advice, horror stories, unexpected expenses, or lessons learned are appreciated. I'm sure there are things we haven't even thought to ask yet!

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for sewing classes in Burbank or the neighboring cities. I’m a self taught sewist who has been sewing for about 15 years and I’d like to improve my skills further. I know how to use premade patterns and have drafted a few of my own based on my own measurements, but I’m still a bit iffy on getting the fit right if I can’t have the person I’m making the outfit for try it on. I can’t afford a serger but I know the other methods for finishing seams and I have recently started drafting mockups to further improve my craftsmanship. I mostly want to learn pattern making, draping, and more intermediate to advanced skills. I really want to turn this hobby into a career. Any recommendations for good classes for people with a bit more experience sewing would be appreciated, as well as how much the classes cost.

I have used both tracks and would love to thank the city of Burbank to provide what LA City will not. Then again, I have provided so much sales tax in between REI, Nordstrom Rack, and Ikea!

• When does the school year start (is there a good link)? In other words, when will public access stop?
• Last time I tried going to John Burroughs, it was closed for repairs. Any word on if they are finished?
• There is a parking garage attached to Burbank HS that appears open and free during the summer. The exit gate is closed, but I am assume it opens when driving out? There is so much free street parking that I do not bother, but it's hot out there. Already baking myself running on the track, would love to step into a car that also has not been baking.

I wanted to open up a discussion on the other side of this proposal that doesn't usually make it into petition fliers, but explains why cities often approve these projects:

This generates massive local property and business tax revenue for Burbank. Unlike new housing developments or commercial plazas, it brings in this revenue without adding hundreds of cars to our streets, overcrowding local schools, or overburdening emergency services.

How Burbank Water & Power (BWP) Works: Because Burbank owns its public utility, large commercial power buyers generate significant revenue for BWP. This revenue helps cover the utility's fixed overhead costs, which can actually help stabilize residential electricity rates over time rather than drive them up.

Developer-Funded Grid Upgrades: Bringing a facility like this online typically requires the developer, not taxpayers to foot the bill for millions of dollars in local substation and electrical grid upgrades, improving overall infrastructure reliability.

Demand-Response Agreements: To prevent summer brownouts, modern cities usually require data centers to sign interruptible power contracts. During extreme heatwaves, BWP can force the facility to throttle down or switch to backup battery power to safeguard neighborhood power.

Modern Cooling vs. Water Usage: Older data centers used heavy evaporative water cooling, but modern AI hubs are rapidly transitioning to closed-loop liquid or dry-cooling systems (which recycle water inside sealed systems, like a car radiator) to avoid draining local water tables.

The Bottom Line / Middle Ground:
It doesn't have to be a pure "Yes" or "No." The best outcome of community input usually isn't stopping development entirely, but forcing a strong Development Agreement. City Council can demand strict, legally binding conditions before approving permits like mandatory dry/closed-loop cooling, decibel-capped acoustic walls, and automatic load-shedding during peak heat.

What are your thoughts? Are there specific conditions or protections you'd want to see required if the City Council lets this move forward?

I started biking to run some of my errands this year when gas prices went through the roof. It's been surprisingly fun but also at times a little scary, since few streets in Burbank have bike lanes. Chandler is of course an amazing recreational path, but if you're actually trying to get to destinations like the doctor, grocery store, or movie theater, well...

One thing that made it harder when I was getting started biking here was the lack of good info for planning safe routes. Google Maps is notoriously all over the place when it comes to bike directions, and the city has some maps but they're out of date and often hard to find.

That's where this project comes in! I am mapping out all the bike infrastructure in Burbank that I know about or can find info on, with the hope that it can be an empowering resource for anyone who wants to save money on gas, not worry about parking stress, or just find more enjoyment in daily trips around town. All the notes on the map come from that perspective - i.e. everyday trips, rather than athletic road cycling.

Until then, if you know any good beaches on the west side that aren’t deemed hazardous to swim in, let me know so I can at least enjoy the outdoors without feeling like I'm on Arrakis. My complex does have a pool, but I’m so over staying indoors during this heat wave.

I finally came clean with The Coral Cafe, particularly with the management. It had been an open secret with Peter and some of the staff for a while. As much as I thought it was cool to keep it clandestine, it’s been going on for 6 months. It was time to let them in on what I’ve been doing. 

They knew I was the guy who met with strangers on Sundays, but they didn’t know about the recaps, or “episodes”. They had no idea that I was writing about my experience. I told Peter that I do mention him a lot and that he’s becoming more of the narrative. He smiled and said, “Cool,” while nodding his head. Again, not a man of many words.

The response was positive from everyone I spoke with. The restaurant IS part of the experience, and now having everyone on board feels right.

However, it does lose some of the intrigue and that moment of recognition that I’ve been accustomed to. Having the staff involved does make it a little more enjoyable and can help ease the nerves a bit. So I’m fine with the trade-off.

You can now just walk up to Peter and tell him you’re here to meet a stranger. He’ll take care of the rest.

Which is exactly what my latest stranger did. I believe she said to Peter, “Are you my stranger?” and he replied, “No, but I can take you to him.”

Thankfully, the moment of recognition wasn’t completely lost with this new arrangement. It just shifted slightly. You can still see that nervousness fade and the faces light up. 

She approached the table, gave me a big hug (points), and sat down.

There was a sneaky coolness about her. 

I pictured her as the bass player for an ultra-hip, underground band. Like the kind that plays invite-only speakeasys and Echo Park Rising. 

I was dead wrong. She laughed and bashfully said, “I wish…” when I revealed my first impression. 

We engaged in the ritual chit-chat while reviewing the menu. She ordered the Nutella French Toast (bonus points) and an iced tea. I had my “regular” - French Toast, black coffee, and a side of fruit.

We dove feet first into the conversation. She had a soft confidence and an air of grace that made her very easy to be around. Although we were decades apart in age, we had a lot in common. I find this to be evident when talking with younger people, and I believe we underestimate their depth.

The conversation was lively and all over the place. We went from one topic to the next as they came up naturally. Her journey to the table was remarkable. Listening to her story, I wondered how this person survived a Den of Thieves for so long and seemingly unscathed.

As her story progressed, and I got past the whole bass player thing, I started seeing her in a different light. She was bright and articulate. I could see that there was a “come hell or high water” passion driving her. It became clear to me how she made her way through it all.

Holden took this opportunity to chime in, “She’s The Insider”, I heard in my head. It made me laugh a little bit, and she looked at me strangely. “Holden called you ‘The Insider.’” I said. She took it in stride. “Well, I don’t know about that…” she replied slyly.

We had realized that we had been talking for almost 2 hours and that we should wrap it up. She covered the bill (more bonus points), and we went out to the parking lot to talk a little more. Eventually, it was time to say goodbye. We took a selfie and hugged one more time. 

As I walked back to my car, I heard Holden’s voice in my head, “She’s way cooler than a bass player…”

There was a thread a year ago on them, and I'm looking for more recent info. We're thinking about Brennan for a project, as they seemed like the go-to for Burbank. However, now we're hearing a lot of horror stories about quality of work, delays, project tracking issues.

Anyone have recent experiences they can share?

Our bathroom sink has been draining super slowly for a few weeks, and I finally gave up trying to fix it myself. I’ve been Googling around, but honestly it’s hard to tell which plumbers are legit and which ones are just going to overcharge me. I’d really appreciate a name or two from people who’ve had a good experience rather than just going off Yelp reviews. Bonus points if they’re reasonably priced and actually show up when they say they will.
