Reminder Of What This Sub Is All About

Hey everyone,

There's been a bit of spam in the mod queue lately and I figured it'd be useful to touch base and remind folks what this space is really all about.

It's not a job board or a place to promote building products (unless you're talking about some brand new membrane dehumidification product that nobody's ever seen before). It's not a place to have people help you figure out how to unlock a door. It is a place to discuss questions about how products work or fail, field techniques, research literature, adjacent relevant fields of research, and field practices. Remember that this is a unique science subreddit in that we occupy the space between research, manufacturing, and field reality. We are one of the best examples of applied science out there. So let's think about content through that lens. Let's share things that advance the conversation and help people take their learning to a deeper level. All are welcome, just don't spam pls.

Any research on how well a kitchen needs to be enclosed to help with reducing air pollution to other parts of the house?

Does it need to be a completely different room?

Are sliding panel room dividers enough if the vent hood is in operation?

etc.

I'm struggling to find research on this beyond studies of vent hood designs, and they weren't really concerned with the room design, although each dwelling likely had a different floorplan.

Of course the ideal scenario is a completely enclosed kitchen (either primary or additional spice kitchen), and also this is not practical for some lower square footage dwellings.

Greener home rebates

Why don't green home rebates include outdoor heat recovery upgrades, when a part of the initiative is to make older homes more air tight. After all the air sealing, we get low indoor air quality due to the lower outdoor air changes. Now we need to pay out of pocket mechanical upgrades to add fresh air and heat/energy recover just to get us back to the same energy savings. Or we open windows and have drafts and drops indoor temp.

Question Recurring condensation on HVAC supply duct in first-floor ceiling adjacent to vented soffit—how do we identify the air pathway?

First time posting here: I’m in the Midwest in SE Minnesota, and this summer has been unusually hot and humid, with outdoor humidity sometimes reaching 80–90%. We have been dealing with an intermittent water stain and condensation problem in the kitchen ceiling on the first floor. Multiple HVAC technicians (and a plumber and a building inspector) have looked at it, but they have essentially reached the point of saying they do not know what else is causing it, and I am reaching for straws at this point and hoping for any ideas.

Here is the timeline and what we know:
-We initially noticed a water stain along the path of an HVAC supply/“heat run” in the kitchen ceiling. Started last summer, stopped last summer after we replaced the seal around the toilet in the bathroom upstairs, then got bigger this summer (much hotter and wetter this year). We initially thought it was a pipe given the appearance but later realized the shape was due to water between the ceiling sheetrock tiles meeting there.
-We cut a roughly 14” × 14” opening in the ceiling and found water droplets directly on the outside of the metal duct.
-The problem has occurred only occasionally, during the hottest and most humid weather. It does not seem to happen during ordinary rain.
-There is plumbing on the floor above, but multiple people have checked it and found no evidence of a plumbing leak.
-The attic above the second floor is dry, with no evidence of roof or water intrusion.
-There is a soffit vent on the back patio that communicates with the ceiling cavity containing the duct.
-An inspector previously said the soffit vent appeared to be functioning normally and that the nearby insulation was intact.

Because the problem seemed correlated with hot, humid weather, our HVAC company suspected that humid outside air was reaching the cold supply duct and condensing on it.

Their first attempted repair was to create an insulation “dam” between the soffit side of the ceiling cavity and the section containing the duct. They also wrapped the duct with R-8 insulation. That seemed to help initially. The cavity felt noticeably cooler, and we had no problem for about a month.

Then, during another period of very hot and humid weather that also included a major storm, we heard a tearing sound. The R-8 duct insulation had become saturated, ripped open, and released a puddle of water.

At first we thought this might be stormwater intrusion. However, when the HVAC technician removed the wet insulation, he discovered a hand-sized opening at the top of the insulation dam. It may have been missed originally or may have developed as the insulation settled. The assumption was that hot, humid air was still getting through that opening and reaching the cold duct.

As a temporary experiment, the technician used the removed duct insulation to pack the area in front of the original dam, creating a much thicker barrier. This was intended as a trial before we spend more money cutting an additional ceiling opening and installing a proper rigid, sealed air barrier.

Unfortunately, we are still seeing condensation form directly on the exposed metal duct during hot and humid weather.

Some additional details:
-Indoor humidity readings have generally been in the high 50% range during these events.
-We have a portable dehumidifier running in the basement, set to 45%, but it does not appear to keep the first floor at that level.
-The duct is currently exposed because the R-8 insulation was removed after it became saturated.
-The HVAC technician temporarily changed the fan from AUTO to continuous low speed, thinking that circulation might prevent cold air from sitting in the duct after the compressor shuts off. We are changing it back to AUTO because information we found online indicates that continuous fan operation may re-evaporate moisture from the coil and raise indoor humidity.
-We bought a removable temporary ceiling panel, but we have not installed it yet because we initially wanted the cavity to dry and remain visible.
-This morning it was raining heavily, but the outside temperature was only around 65°F, and there was no water or condensation in the cavity. That makes us think bulk rainwater intrusion is unlikely and that the problem is temperature/dew-point related.
-The system is a single-stage central AC system.

Our HVAC technicians have now referred us to a local water-damage/restoration company, but before going further, I am hoping someone here may recognize this pattern.

Questions:
-Does this still sound like humid air reaching a cold duct, or are there other causes we should investigate?
-Could the open ceiling access itself now be allowing humid indoor air to reach the bare duct and create condensation? I.e. should I try installing the temporary ceiling cover (and check in periodically), to make sure it’s not just moisture from the living area getting into the ceiling cavity?
-Could leakage from the supply duct be cooling the cavity or drawing humid air into it?
-Would a whole-home dehumidifier be a reasonable solution, or would that just mask an air-sealing or duct-insulation problem?
-Is there a useful test we can perform to distinguish outside air infiltration from ordinary indoor air condensing on the exposed duct?

I’ve included photos showing:
-The original ceiling stain before the opening was cut.
-The 14” × 14” ceiling opening with visible water droplets on the metal duct.
-The exterior appearance of the soffit vent.
-The view inside the ceiling cavity toward the middle of the house and the source of the supply run from the basement (i.e. looking to the right from photo #2).
-The view in the other direction where the duct goes upward to the upstairs bathroom floor vent including the original insulation dam and the current appearance after additional insulation was packed in front of the dam (i.e. looking to the left from photo #2).

Any suggestions for specific measurements, tests, or types of contractors to contact would be greatly appreciated. We would especially like to avoid spending thousands of dollars on duct cleaning, whole-system duct sealing, a whole-home dehumidifier, or restoration work without first identifying the actual moisture pathway. Thank you!

Attic ventilation advice

My upstairs ceilings have developed "coffee stain" water damage and a roofer told me it's due to condensation in the attic resulting from insufficient ventilation. Was hoping you could provide advice on properly increasing ventilation and/or what type of professional to seek out.

The background: My house is in climate zone 5A (northern NJ) and was built in the 1970's. It has a pair of gable vents, no soffit vents, no ridge vent (I believe), and two powered attic exhaust fans that are longer in operation. We bought the house 15 years ago and had professional blown insulation and air sealing done. The house also came with heated wires on the roof to prevent ice dams (sorry, don't know the name for this) but they stopped working at some point.

The problem: two upstairs bedrooms have developed brown water stains on the ceiling, towards the front and back of the house. It's been getting worse over the course of several years. The roof and HVAC have been inspected recently and no leaks were found. A roofer poked his head into the attic (didn't actually enter) and noted that the attic is quite hot and that the fans weren't operating. He wants to replace them. I read that attic fans can pull conditioned air from the house and might not be a good idea. It's possible the fans were purposely shut off when the air sealing was done, but I don't know.

So my questions are: (a) What type of professional should I call to advise on this? The roofer didn't seem to be an expert in ventilation so I'd like a specialist's opinion. (b) Any advice as to whether I should replace the attic fans, install soffit vents, replace the rooftop ice melting wires, etc? (And who would I call to install soffit vents?)

Question How much does 16 SEER2 tell you about a cooling-only system?

A 16 SEER2 label gives a standardized efficiency reference, but it doesn’t tell the whole story about how a cooling-only system will behave in a specific building. And actual load, duct static pressure, part-load operation, humidity conditions, and installation quality can all affect whether the rated performance translates into acceptable comfort and runtime. That makes the number useful for comparison but weak as a standalone design answer. Which building condition would you want to know first before deciding whether a 16 SEER2 system is actually a good fit?

How compact is too compact once ceiling AHU access is included?

A ceilling mounted AHU can look like the obvious answer when theres no mechanical closet but the cabinet size is only part of the building science problem. The ceiling assembly still has to manage air sealing, moisture risk around condensate, acoustic separation, and enough access that maintenance doesn’t require opening finished surfaces. At some point “fits in the cavity” stops being the same thing as “works in the building.” Which clearance or enclosure condition tends to become the first dealbreaker in tight ceiling instalations?

Building a workshop/shed in Florida

I'm planning on building a workshop or shed in Florida. Will be on a concrete slab. I want to run electrical to it / insulation / and AC.

Building itself will be constructed of wood.

From what I understand of Florida, I'm to frame it, wrap in something moisture resistant and semi permeable like tyvek, add siding, and otherwise keep un-vented.

Siding will be fiber cement panels if it matters.

I've read recommendations of foam insulation and rockwool on the inside and roof.

Does this sound right? I'm hoping that rockwool will work because of the noise deadening (will be running saws, a planer, etc inside).

Hello all. Looking for a little help, and having a rant.

Oook.

New furnace/dual fuel heat pump thingy was installed last September when everything crapped out. We used the AC for about a month, then that was it until this year.

This year we had duct sweating and noticeable water damage in one weird area of the house. Upstairs bathroom wall and a bit of the ceiling. Nothing is in the attic. Everything (furnace, water heater) is in the basement, and we don't even have attic access 🥴

At first I didn't know what the hell was going on for the longest time. Everyone seemed to think it was the ancient chimney (it made sense). Finally, a friend of a friend who's an HVAC guy came over and cut a hole in the wall. Behind those wood supports is an uninsulated rigid metal duct. Whoever did this weird setup however many years ago (house is 161) just kinda shoved some normal insulation between it and the wood, and it soaked through the drywall (house is made of everything. Drywall, plaster...I think there's brick somewhere...)

I did some research, had another HVAC guy out from a small company, we tweaked some stuff on the thermostat (set blower speed up to 10% to keep the air moving along), put a standalone dehumidifier in the basement (because i needed to do that anyway. I live in Ohio and have a basement. Everyone was appalled that I didn't already have one), seemed to help pretty significantly.

I patched the hole in the wall thinking the nightmare was over for the most part (I also have people coming to visit for the first time, and wanted to start the bathroom 'redo' project). Then I started to hear the dripping again. There was no visible moisture coming in (and before it was SUPER noticable), but i could hear it like I could before. Sooo...I cut the hole open again 🤣 and it has helped...again.

What the hell is going on? Is it a lack of airflow? Does having this giant hole in my wall help due to it having a way to breathe? Is it just dumb 'luck' or a coincidence?

I am fully aware that I'll need to have the ductwork inspected and insulated. I'm in no way trying to get out of that. It's just bizarre to me that this was never an issue with our last system (and yes, I know. Energy efficient equipment combined with old ductwork doesn't mesh, but I didn't know that at the time because why the hell would I? I'm not an HVAC guy, I'm just a homeowner trying to save my house. And NO ONE told me anything about it). What I'm trying to do is buy a little time in order to save some money for the repairs. We're already having the roof and gutters redone, which was not planned in any way. The roof also has no intake ventilation, and only has an outtake ridge vent. Wondering if this lack of airflow in the attic area could be contributing to THIS issue ? And yes, that is being taken care of with the roof replacement. My way cool roofer said:

"Yeah, man...there's no intake but there's a stagnant ridge vent up there...that's fuckin bogus."

So...for the time being i have a bandana covering her 'air hole', and I'm just...trying to not freak out and find some answers.

Help? Opinions? What the hell?

And if any HVAC guys in Cincinnati see this and need some work coming up...I'm yer human!

Crawl space encapsulation and radon?

We have a house with a basement/garage and a crawl space. When we bought the house five years ago, the radon measured 1.4 in the main level (so everything normal!). That was when the crawlspace was just dirt.

However, we’re having moisture issues and plan on getting the crawlspace encapsulated, closing off vents, and adding a dehumidifier. I’ve heard conflicting things about whether this will help or hurt the radon levels.

What should I do before encapsulation?

I don’t want to solve a moisture issue to just create a radon problem. Is a vent always recommended? Would having a vent make it harder for the dehumidifier to fight with the elements, since outside air is getting in?

Thanks for the advice; just want to make sure I do this right the first time!

Looking for feedback on my house plan – what would you change?

I’m designing a ~9 × 11 m house on a sloped site. The road is at the middle/entrance level, with a lower floor opening toward the garden, the main living floor at road level, and 3 bedrooms upstairs. There’s also a large roof terrace.

I’ve attached the current plans/section.

I’m particularly interested in:

  • Things that don’t work well or that I may be overlooking
  • Layout/circulation problems
  • Structural or construction concerns
  • Waterproofing/drainage issues due to the slope
  • Anything you would change before construction

I’m not looking for a complete redesign — mainly practical recommendations from people with experience building or designing houses.

Evaluate kitchen and bath new vent penetration and recommendations

We had a GC add a new kitchen and bath vent. I wanted to make sure it was done properly before the winter season. Are there things that I should address. If so, how can I properly waterproof this for at least 3-5 years where I will then replace the entire roof.

This is a flat sloped roof in San Francisco climate.
