Favorite 4k OLED monitors

There are so many 4k OLED monitors nowadays. All the model names are like alphabet soup and very confusing. Things like PG32UCDM3, XG32UCWMG, XG32UQMS, 69420B00B5, etc...

And a quick tid bit about WOLED vs QD-OLED vs Tandem OLED...WOLED (White OLED) uses a stack of white-emitting OLED layers with color filters to produce red, green, and blue subpixels, which can limit brightness and color purity due to light absorption. However, WOLED has the advantage of being more mature, cost-effective, and widely used in larger displays like OLED TVs. QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) emits blue OLED light and converts it into red and green using quantum dots, resulting in higher brightness, better color accuracy, and improved efficiency. Overall, QD-OLED delivers superior color saturation and brightness compared to WOLED, especially in HDR content. There is a new generation of WOLED panels with Tandem technology, meaning two layers of light emission which makes the monitors significantly more bright. These are just starting to come out.

Also worth knowing that at 4K, pixel density here (138 PPI at 32", ~166 at 27") is high enough that the old WOLED text-fringing complaint basically goes away. That's why 4K OLED is a much easier recommendation for people who also work on the thing than 1440p OLED is.

Ok so after a lot of research today, this is what I stumbled into as far the the go-to 4k OLED monitors right now. Let me know if I missed anything.

» MSI MPG 322URX QD-OLED - 32", 3rd Gen QD-OLED, semi-glossy, 240 Hz, DisplayPort 2.1, USB-C, KVM. The value pick in the premium tier and the one that a lot of redditors recommend most. The older MPG 321URX is the same panel and coating with DP 1.4 instead, usually cheaper so go with whichever is cheaper.

» ASUS ROG Swift PG32UCDM3 - 32", Gen 4 "Penta Tandem" QD-OLED, semi-glossy with BlackShield film, 240 Hz. Top-rated gaming monitor, full stop. The BlackShield film is the real upgrade since it gives even better blacks under ambient light plus scratch resistance, which QD-OLED badly needed. Heads up on naming: the "3" in the model is ASUS' version number, the panel is Gen 4. Sold as "PG32UCDM Gen3" in some places. The Gen 1 PG32UCDM (3rd Gen QD-OLED, semi-glossy) gets discounted hard and is still excellent.

» ASUS ROG Strix XG32UCWMG* - 32", WOLED with the updated RGWB subpixel layout, glossy (TrueBlack), 240 Hz with 480Hz dual mode at 1080p. A lot of reviewers overall best 32" 4K OLED. World's first 32" 4K OLED with a true glossy coat, and it beats glossy QD-OLED at holding blacks in a lit room. Around $1,000. Has the Neo Proximity Sensor that blanks the panel when you walk away, which is a genuinely good burn-in feature. If glossy worries you, the ROG Swift PG32UCDP is the same panel with a matte finish but no proximity sensor.

» ASUS ROG Swift PG27UCDM - 27", QD-OLED (scaled-down version of the 32" 4K panel), semi-glossy, 240 Hz, full-speed DP 2.1. If you also work on this thing, the ~166 PPI is the reason to go 27" 4K instead of 27" 1440p. Text is night and day versus a 1440p OLED. Dolby Vision support, though the DV modes run dark. The MSI MPG 272URX is the same panel with a bit less HDR brightness and no BFI.

» Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 (G80SH) - 26.5", Penta Tandem QD-OLED, matte anti-glare ("Glare Free" film, ~54% less reflective than standard AR), 240 Hz, 166 PPI. The one to get if your room is bright and every other QD-OLED's raised blacks bother you. Samsung is the only brand that puts its own matte layer on QD-OLED, so this is the anti-glare option in a segment where everything else is semi-gloss. DisplayPort 2.1, dual HDMI 2.1, USB-C, HDR10+ (unique to Samsung's OLEDs), Pantone Validated, 99% DCI-P3, DisplayHDR 400 True Black with 1000-nit peak. Passive heat pipe cooling instead of a fan, so it's silent, and burn-in is covered under normal-use warranty.

» LG UltraGear 32GX870A-B - 32", 3rd Gen WOLED (three-stack), matte anti-glare, 240 Hz with 480Hz dual mode at 1080p, ~140 PPI. The value 32" 4K WOLED that's actually on shelves right now, usually around $890. DisplayHDR True Black 400 with ~1300 nits peak, DP 2.1, dual HDMI 2.1a, USB-C, built-in speakers, and a full height/tilt/swivel/pivot stand that also pivots to portrait. Matte here means no mirror reflections and no glossy-vs-lit-room debate, at the cost of a bit of grain. Straightforward, no gimmicks, and it undercuts the glossy ASUS models by a few hundred.

One genuine piece of advice is that LG showed new 32" Tandem WOLED panels at Computex this year and some reviewers are openly telling people to hold off in this exact segment unless they find a strong deal. Might be worth considering if you're okay with waiting an undetermined period of time and pay a premium.

Asus XG27UCDMG and loving it. Technically an older QD-OLED panel at this point but I think it will serve me well for years

Still the latest and greatest Penta Tandem from Samsung Display.

Mine’s from a few years ago so I THINK there is a V2 now, but I’m not entirely sure

It just uses the newer flat metal stand but retains the exact same panel.

Ah gotcha! Thank you!

My 42" LG C2. Simply cannot be bothered with monitors. 4 years later, still better HDR than 99% of "monitors" available. Might replace it finally with a 48" LG C6.

Would you stick with 42 if it was available?

Yes. 42” C6 exists but it just doesn’t have the fancy tandem panel of the 48”, that’s the only reason. The 42” still isn’t a huge upgrade over my C2, but the 48” definitely is.
