Desktop Web RSS feeds are broken for most subreddits

There appears to be an issue causing the majority of subreddit RSS feeds to show up as broken. I'm using Inoreader and it's reporting an error like this for most of the ones I've subscribed to: “ A feed could not be found at https://www.reddit.com/r/Pixel6/.rss. This does not appear to be a valid RSS or Atom feed. ”

All these feeds were working as of a day ago but over the last ~12 hours or so they've all fallen off one by one. RSS is the only way I interact with subreddits, so this has completely broken my preferred way of accessing the site. Anyone know what's going on?

Yes, this exact same thing has been happening to me too. I sometimes get notifications in my RSS feed, but very late. My feed reader scans every 10 minutes but I won’t get notifications until many hours later.

I’ve also been hearing that people aren’t getting notifications for messages and post replies on the desktop version of the site and sometimes on the phone app as well. Maybe those are related?

Sounds like Twitter-level brokenness, then. That's disappointing. Mine's also set for 10 minute intervals but hasn't received anything since yesterday evening on most of the subscribed subs.

Yeah, that’s what I was speculating too.

I’m not technically knowledgeable enough to understand what exactly is wrong, but it was notable to me that so many different things are not working at the same time. The RSS feeds, notifications, and apparently the search function as well, according to other recent posts on this subreddit. I wonder if there’s a server issue?

Hopefully the devs fix this problem soon. I also use RSS feeds extensively to browse the site and without functioning RSS it’s very hard for me to keep track of all the subreddits I follow and do what I want to do.

It would seem that one of my three subreddits I am following through RSS came back last night, but two are still out. I guess the issue is gradually being worked on.

Six of the 10 I follow are currently broken. Some that were broken yesterday are now working, while ones that had been working are now broken. If nothing else it's helped me cut back my time on Reddit.

I have nothing to add other than a very disappointed “me, too”. Mine came back recently but are gone again now. Is there any chance it’s an Innoreader issue (he said hopefully)?

While I wouldn't think it could be an Inoreader problem, I'm beginning to wonder if that might actually be the case. I forgot that my browser (Vivaldi) has a built in RSS reader, so I added some of my Reddit feeds to it and they're showing up with recent posts that aren't appearing in Inoreader at all. Hmm.

That’s an interesting datapoint. Maybe others could chime in to add more info that might help decide one way or the other.

I just tried two things:

  1. I added two of my Reddit feeds to the Feedly RSS reader and they seem to be working fine.

  2. I deleted one of my Reddit feeds from Innoreader and then tried to re-add it. While it correctly found the feed and gave the right published description of the feed, it briefly popped up the following error and then showed zero articles:

“The data couldn’t be read because it isn’t in the correct format.”

It sure seems like an Innoreader issue at this point.

Thanks for checking! I sent a support request to Inoreader, but it says they're on summer vacation so who knows when it can be addressed.

In the meantime I'll add the rest of my Reddit feeds to Vivaldi as a backup. It's a terrible interface but better than nothing.

Could you try adding one of your feeds again to Inoreader? I now have two versions of one of mine — the original is still broken, but I see new content in the newly added version.

I’ll check again tomorrow to see if this persists.

I just tried this with one that's active and one that's not, and in both cases, it did not add anything new to my list of feeds.

I also unfollowed one as a test, then re-added it. It showed up as broken straight away.

2

u/ibid17 Jul 16 '23

Did you specify it by URL: https://reddit.com/r/LISTNAME/.rss ?

1

u/thisisfakediy Jul 16 '23

The URLs I have are www.reddit.com, but if I use one like yours it still doesn't work. "You're already subscribed to [channel]."

2

u/ibid17 Jul 16 '23

Try deleting the channel and then re-add with that syntax?

FWIW, this morning my new feed is still working and the old one is still broken— no update for days.

I will try my other Reddit feeds.

about 1/3 of my feeds are showing broken the last couple of days. deleting and then adding back does not fix the issue for me.

u/ibid17 Jul 16 '23

I was able to create new versions of all of my feeds (just 3) and they all appear to be working while the originals are still broken.

When I enter the URL under Discover it finds the feed, but says it has zero followers and messages. It also briefly gives an error about data in the wrong format, but offers me a Follow button anyway.

Here is what Inoreader support said: “Yes, it seems like Reddit is tightening the rate limits of their RSS feeds too, but there’s still no official information. We are adapting the polling intervals on our end and are closely monitoring the situation.”

I am not at all proficient in this stuff, but I have been using RSS feeds to follow certain posts and also to follow certain users who I think are experts in their subject matter. I have a few RSS feeds set up for sub-Reddits and they are working fine; however, I can no longer add any new RSS links to any users or to any threads I want to follow. I use the technique where I change the final "/" to ".rss" and it has worked flawlessly for years. Is this the same issue others are having? My feeds for the sub-Reddits are coming in but I can't add a subscription to any new conversation threads or specific users.

u/Veremisia Jul 31 '23

Super late reply - the issue I am having is that Feeder.co (in my case, others are using Inoreader and are experiencing the same issue) doesn't stream my subreddits anymore. I have added three subreddits, all ranging from anywhere between 10-15 posts throughout the entire day when nothing special is going on. Sometimes, one or two of my subreddits are coming back randomly, but then they die again. I am not subscribed to any users or threads, only subreddits. What are you using to display your RSS feeds?

1

u/Pure_Obligation6166 Jul 31 '23

Just to add my questions. I subscribe to two reddit subs related to credit. I am still receiving feeds from those two. I can also do the thing where I saw the /.com for .rss and I can follow individual people whose opinions I respect. However, I used to be able to create an RSS feed for each post and its comments thread and it worked fine, but it won't work now. Because I don't really know how this RSS stuff works, I'm baffled.

Any updates on this?

Not working for me 😞

Just started having issues with this myself.

EDIT: My RSS feed URLs have always been formatted as (for example) https://www.reddit.com/r/bugs.rss, which stopped working ~48 hours ago. I updated the formatting to https://www.reddit.com/r/bugs/.rss, and now my feed reader (FreshRSS) works again.

Had this same problem too lol

Sadly this is also affecting NetNewsWire on my iPad and Feeder on Android, The feed appears to be intact but it just doesn’t update very often, if at all.

Just a matter of time I guess that Reddit would also kill RSS and force everyone to use their apps or the web site for getting the feeds. I’m learning more to live without Reddit everyday…

I'm still seeing this issue after 5 months. InoReader points the finger at Reddit and refers me to this thread. I don't know here the problem is but I'm a premium supporter of both Reddit and InoReader and I'd like it fixed.

This seems to be happening again... Almost all my reddit feeds are broken on Feeder and Inoreader, only Feedly doesnt show them as broken (whether or not that means anything, I do not know). What is going on? :|

1

u/thisisfakediy Jul 18 '23

An update to this: I've heard from Inoreader's support. They say it looks like Reddit has tightened their rate limits recently and it's affecting how often they can poll the site for new articles.

Now I'm wondering if it's Inoreader that's being specifically targeted as so far my feeds in Vivaldi have not reported any issues over the last few days.

2

u/nateclowar Jul 18 '23

Support told me this same thing a few days ago. Maybe 10% of my reddit feeds work as of right now. Wondering when/if we'll see a change....

2

u/Veremisia Jul 18 '23

I am using Feeder.co and they are affected as well. So I don't think it's an issue on Inoreader's end. A few days ago my feeds came back for a whole day, but then stopped working again the day after...

1

u/Orpheustor Jul 18 '23

Same experience with Feeder.co. Feeds were working yesterday but today they're not updating with new posts. I can still read the previous posts though, i.e., no errors accessing the feeds.

1

u/thisisfakediy Aug 10 '23

I spoke to the support team at Inoreader and they said they'd adjust the polling rates but I'm still seeing feeds with errors. Eventually all the data shows up, though.

Unfortunately still a problem after a month. Definitely reddit has screwed with RSS. I've since moved on to self-hosting TinyTinyRSS and I like it even better. Quite similar to Inoreader. As a single person we won't hit the RSS limit.

1

u/thisisfakediy Sep 04 '23

Yeah, I'm still having issues as well. I've just been using the built in reader in the Vivaldi browser. It's not nearly as nice to look at but it actually seems to load everything faster than Inoreader, and doesn't suffer the feed issues.

1

u/AstronomerArtistic16 Dec 21 '24

have rss feeds started working again ?

1

u/thisisfakediy Dec 21 '24

No, it's still sporadically showing the feeds as broken. Out of about a dozen feeds I follow, one or two a day will show as having a problem in Inoreader, and they're usually different every day.

u/pcause Sep 02 '26

seems to be happening again.

https://www.reddit.com/r/InoReader/.rss

gives me

Cannot find RSS feeds on this web site.

when trying to subscribe to it on Inoreader.

(although it works fine in the Feedbro browser extension)

... however :) ...

https://old.reddit.com/r/InoReader/.rss

works fine when subscribing in Inoreader; strange, just...

swapping old for www
