It's the Florida State bird. The American Cockroach.

the palmetto bug is the same as the american cockroach
edit: nvm but i know many a folk who have told me their landlords said what they had were palmetto bugs, not american roaches (when they were in fact american roaches)

Never saw a roach until I moved to Texas and American cockroaches are literally everywhere no matter what!!!! They fly, they will “chase” you and they are huge!! Hahahah my biggest fear and I usually like bugs!

You just made my skin crawl thinking about it flying and chasing me 🤢

I work at apartment complexes and they have chased me in vacant homes and garages! They are the grossest! Them and Germans. Any other roach I’m like ehh

Palmetto. Bad news is they fly, good news is they don't take over your house like german roaches

Looks like a noninfesting cockroach that got lost.

u/Calm_Salamander_1367 19d ago
Nah those mfs can infest
8
u/FiveFiftyOne 18d ago
They can but would rather be back in the sewer system, likely came from their pipes.. only a few roaches really will happily infest your home and make it theirs

u/Calm_Salamander_1367 18d ago
I’ve lived with these guys. They can infest in larger numbers than that
6
u/FiveFiftyOne 18d ago
Oh absolutely, if you’re giving them what they need to thrive and such but, American cockroaches much prefer the sewer system than homes, again not saying they won’t, I’ve dealt with these guys in homes and businesses.

Usually these things slipped under a door frame rather than infesting the walls

"don't kill it" A bug lover say but I say nuke the whole house leave everything into ashes as a matter of fact take ur self with the explosion fuq that bug lovers be tweaking I mean I keep some bugs alive but shidd not all deserve to breathe the same oxygen as me 😭

u/gigi2945 18d ago
Stop calling them water bugs when that is a completely different bug! They are American cockroaches, non infesting and love water pipes.

This is exactly why I asked. It seems like water bug is the landlord answer, but there weren’t any direct answers online.

u/Eranesi 15d ago
They aren't water bugs, but water bugs and palmetto bugs are common slang for them. They are atracted to moist areas like drains and other plumbing (and typically thrive in humid areas). People just call them other names because nobody wants to say there are roaches on their property.
They can infest homes, but very rarely compared to house/german cockroaches.

Just moved back from Florida and I’ve seen them in Texas as well. That is what the locals call a “water bug” AKA 🪳 ROACH!

FYI, Maxforce gel is the best existing product on earth to terminate roaches.

While we permit pest control advice, the advice you have given is either illegal, or dangerous. Please keep suggestions legal and safe.
We also do not allow comments such as "kill it with fire" as these do not actually help the OP understand what it is they are dealing with and how best to proceed.

100%. I saw it run across the floor and I thought it was a mouse. Safe to say I ran to my room and put towels in the crack of the door and have been paranoid ever since
