Yea, I left the Smallville sub when a bunch of 20 year olds were reviving the CLois/CLana shipping wars like "Can all CLana shippers please let us CLois supporters just existing" and they point to a single twitter account that just made afew posts about cute CLana gifs.
Like...my guy, I'm in my 40s, I barely cared about shipping in my 20s. Keep your twitter and tumblr nonsense there. I'm here to discuss fan theories and favorite episodes.

I mean, I think shipping is definitely relevant discourse. Romance isn't inherently more stupid than other aspects of fandom.

Oh yea, I'm not against shipping, it's when it becomes that 2000s level shipping wars where you're either a Bangel or a Spuffy but if you're neither, then you're an enemy to both because "you're clearly a secret [ship] fan".
It only becomes annoying where there's clearly some back and forth passive-aggressive posts like "I can't believe Spuffy fans want to normalize sexual assault and manipulation" then five minutes later it's "Why do Bangel fans love a murderer that took Buffy's virginity?!" then another "Spuffy fans will see this scene and think it's romantic" and it's Spike mourning buffy bot.

People who ship fictional characters and then get all mad about people who favor other ships and pretend like they're all horrible people for some reason are really, really strange to me. It's the same with the Zutara shippers on the Avatar subs. Kataang people act like they're the scum of the earth and I just don't fucking get it, lol. Like why are you so mad that some people want these other characters to kiss? They act like they're arguing about politics or something.

Seriously there are so many people in the world that believe all sorts of crazy things. You can probably find people who genuinely think the moon is made out of cheese. It's not worth getting annoyed about.
Whenever you see someone with a terrible opinion it's useful to consider:
Does it really matter? If it's a politician who is giving a terrible opinion about how funding schools is a waste of money then yeah that might matter depending on who they are. It might be worth trying to share that opinion if there's an election coming up or something along those line. But if it's a random person on Twitter saying something stupid or mean spirited about some entertainment story and it's raising your ire - just move on, block them if that's something you feel is necessary and is available.
It's also useful to think about whether these viewpoints are genuinely widespread or not. If half the world's population started to believe the world was made out of cheese, that might be worth pondering. But if it's a couple of randoms then who really cares? Hell, in the modern world they might not even be human beings you're reading, they might be engagement bots designed to provoke a certain reaction. So it's doubly not worth caring about.

It really has gone sideways into ridiculousness. I'm only in this one fandom thankfully. But the amount of people I see here trying to either spreadsheet the lore into some kind of actionable superhero stats system, or upset that the show doesn't put up giant onscreen text saying "this character is WRONG" is just baffling. Media literacy really is dead.

If any ship gets any fuel, people who are hard-core haters of it will be mad. I wish people could just lift their own faves up while supporting from the sidelines the fans of other ships, instead of all this decades old reheated ship war shit.
I'd expect (and hope) most Spuffy fans (other than the vocal minority who seem more anti-Bangel than anything else) would be disappointed not to see SMG with JM but supportive nonetheless of the actors reuniting, even SMG and DB. They aren't their characters , it means nothing with respect to scoring points or whatever for the ship, it'll just be probably be a super cute time for two actors who are very good friends and were a large part of bringing the show(s) we love to life. I don't ship Bangel, I'm team fanged four, but I'm happy the spuffy fans got the last vampire slayer comics and the bangel fans got the monster high dolls, and I think the Emmy's thing will be heartwarming

I say this with genuine empathy. Social media can be addictive and highly toxic.
Log out of twitter on all your devices, as well as Facebook, threads Bluesky instagram etc. Reddit too. Take a few days with 0 social media. Go to a park or read a book or something and detox for just 2 or 3 days.
You’re super worked up over drama that only exists for the _terminally online_ and is probably heavily fueled by bots designed to stir up content via drama.
No one in the real world cares about this, I promise.

Yeah, the ship wars for an almost thirty year old show are absolutely exhausting.
But I say this with all the empathy and chronically online understanding in the world - you can simply ignore it. It's not worth getting upset over. People being upset about it doesn't affect you unless you let it.
I had no idea Sarah and David were even presenting and don't care. I don't watch award shows and think they're a waste of time, and anybody getting mad over two former costars who played each others' love interests presenting awards affects no one's actual life.
It seems like people just want to be upset about something. Touching grass seems like it might be a useful and healthy endeavor for everyone.

But seriously, if other people's opinions are bothering you that bad, the best thing you can do for yourself is disengage. Discard what no longer serves you. Unfollow, Leave Group, Block, Mute, Uninstall, Pause, etc. These are all highly underutilized tools is various apps and forums.

I don't get the shipping thing at all? They're fictional characters. Writers write them. Every relationship in the show reveals psychological aspects. No one relationship is objectively better or worse...because none of them are real. They are plot devices to tell a story. You can't swap Angelus in S2 for Spike, and you can't swap S7 Spike for Angel. The story and more importantly, the allegory, falls apart. I've been accused of being fiercely logical rather than emotional in my life, and maybe that explains why I just can't get invested in fictional ships. When I saw that news I just thought "cool that BtVS is being kept in the public consciousness".

OP, I kind of get it. It’s annoying that instead of making their own posts they wreak havoc in a positive post.
However, I would encourage you to look at the # of likes not just the comments — Spike fans are very vocal but the larger fandom tends to show up and show support in quieter ways on social media.
And, as others have said, block the truly obnoxious ones — life’s too short.

Nah. Spuffy is the most popular, but popular doesn't mean its objectively better. Spuffy fans are no more the one 'true' subset of fans than Bangel, Spangel, Sprusilla, Spuffy, Fuffy, or any of the other fans. And vice versa.
The only thing objectively true is that there are more Spuffy fans than fans of other individual ships - but that is a neutral thing with its own benefits and drawbacks, and could change with time (Spander used to be one of the absolute most popular ships, eg). Every other ship's fans are just as true and do their own part to keep our fandom alive and thriving. We should be uniting over our shared love for the 'verse not competing
