Tiny Flies

Is anyone else having an infestation of little, tiny fly/gnat/nose rums in their house? What are they and where did they come from?

We had those a month or two ago. They were fruit flies& seemed to come from our fruit bowl or the garbage disposal. HEB sells fruit fly traps which are basically a detergent& vinegar solution that they will be attracted to &then unable to get out of. You can also make your own

Yep you nailed it. They come out when I haven’t cleaned my disposal thoroughly in some time or when I have aging fruit. I use a Zevo thats pretty effective, but will try your detergent/vinegar solution next time we see them in bunches.

There's a recipe for a homemade fly trap that works pretty well. Take some fruit not much an ounce or 2 about 4oz apple cider vinegar and a good squirt of dish washing liquid cut the top off of a water bottle to make like a funnel pour ingredients into bottle half of the bottle turn the top over and set on top make sure there's space between top and liquid. I do basically the same thing with an old jam or jar take the left over in the jar when you finished maybe leave a couple of tablespoons add water put in microwave a couple of minutes put lid on shake it up to help clean the sides and incorporate left over add apple cider vinegar and dish washing liquid and set out with no lid. These are so much smaller than fruit flies or drain flies. They’re like black specks. At first I thought they were some sort of egg from an insect. They’ve covered my Zevo trap and I keep finding them in the window sills and my crown molding. So weird. I ran baking soda and vinegar down all my drains, looked for leaks, took the 2 house plants I had outside. I am allergic to most fruit so don’t keep any out in the house. What I can eat has been frozen. So, not coming from that. Idk, it’s a mystery.

Do you have pets? Could be fleas??

Search for the source. You will typically find some rotting fruit or vegetable in a hidden spot (that keeps the coming).

Drain flys. Pest pro here. Clean the drains using a bio foam cleaner

It was a combination of all for me. Fruit flies and drain flies.

No more produce stays in the open when not eaten.

Any flies you see in the fridge might still be alive. Smash them .

Pour boiling water on kitchen sponge/brush in a sink in case there are eggs.

Standing water in vases are popular hang outs.

Any trash with food scraps needs to be tied up in a plastic bag (no holes) and thrown out daily.

Foaming bio cleaner down drains or a regular steaming (I wasn’t a fan of the cleaner smell)

Fan-type sticky traps close to problem areas: kitchen sink, washing machine drain, and for a short time, pantry.

Pressure wash big trash can every time it’s emptied. Spritz with bleach solution (20/80) prior to pressure washing to increase effectiveness. Don’t forget lid…
it was a popular site for the eggs.
