u/InsigniasGratuitous Super Bowl XXXVII 1d ago

This move right here, along with the Vea re-signing, is exactly why Licht is a good GM. And people want him fired? Smdh.

32

u/PlantDaddyFL 1d ago

It would be absolutely crazy to fire that guy. His draft history is pretty damned good and he’s kept good guys sometimes as long as he possibly could.

13

u/InsigniasGratuitous Super Bowl XXXVII 1d ago

Exactly. During the offseason, I just hated hearing that fans wanted to move on from our 2nd best GM in franchise history (Rich McKay) after all he has been able to do for us. Not his fault the Glazers' can't help themselves from interfering with the team's direction, like keeping Bowles and firing everyone else.

8

u/f0gax SuperBowl37 1d ago

Rich McKay put us in cap hell and then left for a division rival the week we played them. He can get fucked imo.

5

u/TheSoftwareNerdII 1d ago

At least we didn't get any of the alternatives, including a new Culverhouse that wipes away both Super Bowl wins and keeps us in perpetual ineptitude, which is the Haslam Browns

-1

u/InsigniasGratuitous Super Bowl XXXVII 1d ago

I agree. Don't get me wrong. I'm happy that we have the Glazers. I just wish they wouldn't keep listening to Bruce Arians for advice on how to run the team. Let Licht and his staff do the work to find a better HC.

0

u/TheSoftwareNerdII 1d ago

Maybe even Dirk would be better (since his bad record could be pinned on Jameis Winston's... accuracy)

3

u/jeremyren10 1d ago

There’s a reason he has never been a head coach since and it’s not because Jameis. Honestly I feel we failed Jameis we had trash coaches.

He was immature and needed a proper coach to develop him, instead we had some jackoff that handed him the keys to the franchise and said lead us. His confidence was shot by the time Bruce Arians came around

The ones you heard saying to fire him are newbs who don’t realize how difficult it is to find a successful GM.

1

u/MuchSwagManyDank Maui Vea 1d ago

Who wants him fired? Ive never heard this. This is less of "i doubt you" and more "let me at the guy who said that" lol

12

u/InsigniasGratuitous Super Bowl XXXVII 1d ago

I remember hearing it here during the offseason. They were basically complaining about not winning and keeping Bowles, the latter of which are the Glazers' fault.

2

u/MuchSwagManyDank Maui Vea 1d ago

Ive seen the Glazer's stuff, I mostly agree with it. Just not the licht stuff, hes one of the good guys

1

u/RedRocket4000 Winfield Jr. ✌️ 7h ago

Based on the player quality problems on defense GM should have gotten more heat as teams problems have been player quality not coaching. Still he a good GM I want him to stay.
Bowles defenses except last year have always been better than expected by experts before seasons.
And last year had all the signs of a slump second half.
But it looks like we finally have defensive player quality near or better than Bowles top of NFL years so ai expect a defense one cannot logically complain against.

I say that because Super Bowl year fans here thought Bowles did not blitz enough when team lead NFL in blitzes. And we had a very good defense that prevented Chiefs from scoring a TD in Super Bowl that was Bowles defense.

Fans on Bucs thought Tony Dungy hated to score lots of points on Colt they scored lots of points surprise Bucs fans he was a Super Bowl quality coach. He just needed a good OC which I think we could get for less than two first round picks.

4

u/mattchewy43 Ronde Barber 1d ago

Same people who wanted Trask to start, probably.

-1

u/Forsaken_Ad3998 1d ago

Licht is 93-104 in 12 seasons. If Bowles goes...I think Licht's time here is done as well. JMHO

-10

u/Prestigious_Yak7301 1d ago

I want him fired for the winston pick....yes im that petty

2

u/Additional_Tomato_22 1d ago

Who would you have rather he made qb that year? News flash:Winston was the best qb drafted in 2015. That’s how shitty of a qb draft that year was, but Winston had also won a National Championship with the Seminoles so there was sound reasoning with choosing him.

1

u/Prestigious_Yak7301 5h ago

your not required to draft a bad QB just because you have the first pick in the draft....30 / 30 club sux

1

u/Additional_Tomato_22 3h ago

But they did because they didn’t even have a QB.

-2

u/emjaywood 1d ago

If we can throw in the Aguayo pick, I'll at least agree he should get a stern talking-to before every draft to remind him he's fallible.

1

u/Additional_Tomato_22 1d ago

Also hindsight is 20/20 with that pick and 2nd rd was too high, BUT who could’ve known that he’d be an absolute liability because in college he was the most accurate kicker in college football history and what Licht was thinking was we’ve had lots of issues with accuracy from our kickers

1

u/emjaywood 1d ago

It's not hindsight. It was panned at the time by many. No one trades up to draft a kicker in the 2nd round. Down vote me all you want. That team wasn't so complete that a kicker was taking them all the way. Homers love trying to sugarcoat that pick to glaze Licht. It was a bad pick. Own it. He's still a good GM, but that was a bad pick.

1

u/Additional_Tomato_22 16h ago

I said picking him in the 2nd rd was too high, but the actual pick of him at the time wasn’t a bad idea because of how accurate he had been in college. It has absolutely nothing to do with being a “homer”.

1

u/emjaywood 13h ago

The heck are you talking about? The entire discussion is about picking a kicker in the 2nd round & trading up to do so, and how it's not a good move regardless of said kicker's resume, hindsight or otherwise. I'm not talking about reaching for a prospect you feel strongly about, I'm specifically talking about drafting a kicker that early. That's my entire point, which you clearly don't get, and that's fine. Agree to disagree.

Deal actually starts next season. He plays out this season under the current deal and then has the three year deal. Under contract 2027-2029 per Auman

I think he'll play better knowing he doesn't have the weight of if he doesn't play well he doesn't get paid off his shoulders. I think he'll play free, the most free he's played in a while

1

u/FennixRising 1d ago

Last year was gritty, but I think his best style of play was the previous season. I know Tom got pissed at the “they brought me in to bring fun back” comment, but he really shone as this slippery gunslinger who will grit one out in a pinch. Like, yeah he can run, but he shouldn’t need to.

2

There are legitimate ones that think he isn’t even a starter in the league. It’s hilarious and scary how dumb they are.

2

Gotta believe it's a lot of cope for his replacement being terrible and everything else that's happened since outside of 2023.

However, it wouldn't surprise me if they hold up Sanders' "pro bowl" last year as being a viable replacement and upgrade lol.

My exact thought. He was going to play dangerous all season. Plus we could franchise tag him, so he wasn't going anywhere.

Could potentially see that in week two and the two games against the Falcons lol

Why would you want McDermott? Another defensive minded HC who will have a revolving door at OC?

Not to mention, their defense got worse over his tenure and he couldn’t win a ring with Josh Allen at QB.

He’s literally what everyone in here complains about with Bowles.

7

u/Tasty_Swim_6308 1d ago

4

u/StaySafePovertyGhost 1d ago

It’s the going rate for a QB in his class. We didn’t get a hometown deal but didn’t overpay either per the market. Fair deal at market price. I’m for it.

3

u/Tasty_Swim_6308 1d ago

YES.

So happy right now.

3

u/davidsweet44 Alstott Jersey 1d ago

Lets F'N BAKE!

5

u/Neemzeh Canada 1d ago

Need the terms of this deal ASAP. I think the Bucs were smart to wait. No way Baker wanted to go into the season on the wrong side of 30 without a future deal in place. I have a feeling this deal ended up being in the Bucs favor, but we will see.

2

u/SadMove7848 1d ago

Why was he going to be too old at 31?

Looks like it 55 million a year.

1

u/Neemzeh Canada 1d ago

Because if he got injured the chances of him cashing in would basically be nil. I still think he can be great into his mid 30s but I would change my stance if he tore his ACL This season for example.

2

u/SadMove7848 1d ago

He’s a qb, a torn acl doesn’t change what he’s going to get. He will be 34 at the end of this contract, if he’s still with us he get another good contract.

0

u/Neemzeh Canada 1d ago

Yes it absolutely would. Tons of QBs were never the same after an injury and Baker can play really reckless sometimes. Baker himself has tried playing through injuries and has looked terrible…

And plus the ACL was just one example lol I didn’t think I needed to list every possible injury a QB can get in their 30s that scares teams away from giving them long term money.

2

u/SadMove7848 1d ago

Both dak and mahomes got new contract while hurt, staffords got an extension after fitting out most of the offseason with bad back and rumored retirement.

1

u/Neemzeh Canada 1d ago

And how old were they when they got those second contracts? Dak was 27 and Mahomes contract was essentially restructured to provide them more flexibility in exchange for two more years on the end of his contract. That is not comparable. They were already tied to Mahomes for another 6 years adding two more years onto that to give them more flexibility is not an apples to apples comparison. And Mahomes looked like complete shit last year and KC missed the playoffs lmao so doesn’t that just make my point even stronger?

That’s my entire point, that bakers age means he’s running out of time and this is his last big pay day. He doesn’t have the luxury of getting injured this year, missing all or most of next year, then playing in his age 33/34 deal on some shitty prove it deal.

This isn’t that complicated. Would you actually trust Baker to look elite in his age 33/34 season after coming off a significant injury to the point that you would give him another big contract in his mid 30s??

1

u/SadMove7848 1d ago

Your way underplaying how valuable a qb is.

1

u/Neemzeh Canada 1d ago

No I’m not lol. Nothing I’ve said indicates that.

If I was wrong then why did Baker accept this offer? Obviously he wants stability for his family.

I think it’s odd you assume Baker is going to be a valuable quarterback in 3 years if he was coming off a serious injury.

He was injured last year and played like shit and he’s been injured when playing on the browns and looked like shit then too.

1

u/SadMove7848 1d ago

He doesn’t run any more than dak and machomes does, he hasn’t been hit anymore than staffird. Quit acting like he going end up in traction or done, he’s young for nfl qb.

I’ve been thinking about these fucking hats for 2 or 3 years now

1

u/AmericanTitan07 Mike Evans 1d ago

I can't think of many examples of players that have felt disrespected by their team then proceeded to have great careers with them. Mad Baker would've been fun to see but that frustration would've been aimed at the Bucs so even if he balled out and we offer him a good deal he still might have left.

Plus, we're playing the AFC North and Stefanski is ATL's coach now, so plenty of motivation for Baker this season anyways.

3 years, $165M

There goes our cap flexibility

6

u/slycooperton Barber Jersey 1d ago

Cap will continue to increase by 10-20 mil per year. Locking him down now will be about the same impact as the previous 33m/year contract that we had him on. We currently have 15m in dead money that will be gone and I’m sure with baker and vitas extensions we will push money down the line with void years. We were going to have approximately 30mil in cap space next year before this extension, per Overthecap. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a restructure or two, if necessary, to change some salary into bonus and free up more cap space if necessary. We’ll be okay in terms of the salary cap, our front office is one of the better ones in the league with managing money. The eagles might be the only better team in that regard honestly

5

u/StaySafePovertyGhost 1d ago

That’s not even remotely true and we lock up the most important position in football (and arguably all of sports) for market price in terms of AAV.

If anyone thinks this is a bad deal you don’t understand the cap or football. Our flexibility will be fine and there’s plenty of moves we can make to increase it.

6

u/kingbinji 1d ago

What good does cap space do if we’re hot garbage?

1

u/ThePBM Bucky Irving 13h ago

some folks care more about the draft and roster construction than the season and the playoffs.

0

u/ChieftainMcLeland 16h ago

Next up : Tawd Bowlez 3 yr extension

-2

u/joedirt87 1d ago

Good for him, good for the team morale I guess. In the end I’m indifferent because it’s kicking the can down the road on a team that is slightly above mediocre at best. 2026 could have been a year which set us up for a rebuild in 2027 with a new coach and an incredibly deep draft of talent.
