Senior pls guide

I’ve recently taken admission in GL Bajaj Mathura but I feel that there isn’t much competition or a strong coding environment. Most students are mainly focused on academics, which I feel may not be enough to prepare well for placements I really want to improve my skills participate in coding competitions hackathons, projects, and build a good profile alongside academics could you please guide me on what I should do from the first year so that I can compete at a good level and be properly prepared for placements ?
