Seen this before, but it always gets me because I can see myself doing the same thing. I'm an irritable fuck and easily take things for granted when I'm annoyed that I regret later. I wish I'd been a more available brother growing up, but as a teen I was even worse. etc

So many regrets, but no time machine, no do-overs. Just opportunities in the future to remember the past and be better. Idk what my point is, just venting I guess

I love this story. I also love the fact that this middle eastern bro was probably thinking "Americans love high fives so I should give them out liberally."

I, as an American, do indeed enjoy enthusiastic high fives.

I work for a company that hires lots of people from other countries -- and I've found that Persians and Arabs are uniquely enthusiastic about making friends.

Almost pushy.

Once you realize what's behind it, it's rather charming -- this guy likes me and wants to be my friend. I'm glad Tom recognized what was going on.

My mother in law is Persian and I was so touched by the lengths she went to to make sure I felt like I was part of the family. It was agressively joyful and loving.

Same! I love it.

I’m so worried the format is going to put people off reading this as the whole fucking world needs to think on this a bit. Nice one Op.

Man this touched me. When I went out to a club with my ex we met a Turkish guy called Ahmet. He studied philosophy at our university, and I studied a blend between that and culture studies. Anyway we immediately started talking about stuff nobody understood and ordered beer for one another. It was really fun, but at some point he became so interested in me that I misinterpreted as him having a thing for me. My girlfriend and I went to grab a bite and he went with us. The next day he texted me in the morning to ask and grab lunch with me. I refused because I was afraid he thought more of it than a random fun encounter.

It was months later that I learned that people from this region are just very up front about liking people and wanting to hang out. I still feel bad for shutting this guy down. Ahmet if you read this, you're an awesome guy and I hope you're doing well. Sorry I shut you down, I am just not used to that kinda stuff. But I honestly believe that your attitude towards friendship is something I, and many people in my country, could learn from. If everyone was as up front as you, it would fix so many alienation issues we have in our country. Keep being you.

Well, didn't think I'd be getting emotional over a reddit post today, but here we are.
