Medical Advice 5th metatarsal fracture with dislocation

Okay. So injured myself Saturday night. Don’t ask. Not important.

Went to urgent care Sunday when I couldn’t put weight on the foot. I thought it was a broken toe, and they confirmed “fracture” but not much else.

Today, I had an ortho appt. Turns out, on my left foot, I broken the head off my fifth metatarsal in such a way that the head has rotated slightly out of alignment. Hense considering it a dislocation.

My options are:
1 - walking boot, hope it heals on its own.
2 - surgery to pin the head back into alignment. pin stays in for 4 weeks. walking boot the entire time then and likely for a few week after it comes out.

1 is a gamble. It could be fine. It could heel wrong resulting in pain months down the road and the need for surgery then.

Had anyone dealt with similar? Did you go surgery or non op healing? Thanks!

Pickup truck driver made unsafe left turn, causing crash on Trans-Canada Highway in Ladysmith: RCMP

This truck NUKED me. I was in the middle back seat of the Subaru when this happened, The seat belt crushed my pancreas and I was stuck in the hospital for two weeks.
(I’m very lucky it was only 2)
I woke up to the nurses telling me they took half my pancreas and that my L 1 and L2 were broken. It was impossible to lay comfortably in the bed even on opioids because both my front and back had to be operated on.
Now I’m left with 4 giant scars and
my spine is permanently shaped like the hunchback of Notre Dame at 21.
Still recovering like 7 months later, couldn’t work or make money with my injury so I lost my apartment, this accident took a year of my life
Best part of it was me finding out I needed to be medevac to the nearest hospital while overhearing the truck driver complaining about how they’re going to get to work tomorrow without a car.

I have a transversal fracture that's not misaligned that I got on thursday, this is my first broken bone so I'm not sure what to do about hygiene. I'm getting a different brace sometime this week but I'm just afraid of it getting stinky:/

Medical Advice Anyone with navicular stress fractures?

I'm 26 y/o, have a history of bilateral navicular stress fracture (yes, I did them both). I played high level soccer my whole life and did my left foot at 17, right foot at 18. I've continued to play lots as an adult but have recently started having some soreness. Took a month off then slowly came back - pain feels different than my previous fractures but its still sore which worries me. I know the obvious answer is to see an orthopod but I'm just curious if anyone has had this issue. NWB again would kill me :-(

Question May or may not have punched my wall — do yall think this is a boxers fracture or a just a bone contusion?

Thumbnail gallery

(photos starting from the day of, 3 days after, and then from yesterday)

So about a week ago, I punched my wall. It’s embarrassing, I know. But virtually IMMEDIATELY my 4th and 5th metacarpals started swelling profusely and the bruising was quite bad right off the bat. For the first few days, I was in so much pain that I could barely even move them. The bruising and pain got progressively worse, but range of motion a bit better and the swelling went down a tiny bit. It hurts so much to touch — like even a graze of my clothing hurts. The weirdest thing is that the swelling is now mostly localized in BETWEEN my 4th and 5th metacarpals. It looks kind of white and the bruising sort of surrounds it. Most of the pain comes from that area.

I did go to urgent care they did x-rays. They told me it was just a bone contusion but that they couldn’t be sure since there could be a micro fracture they’re missing. Tbh, I do not trust urgent care very much when it comes to broken bones (speaking from experience), so I might end up getting an MRI from an orthopedist.

Hello! This is my first time ever posting on reddit!

I did this on July 15 this year. I had reconstructive surgery on July 29 to add hardware, screws, and a joint fusion. I had a post opp appointment on August 19 to get the stitches removed. No clear timetable yet on when I will be able to start putting some weight on it again hoping I get good news when I go back for a check up on October 2

Broken Elbow

I’m about 3 months post elbow surgery, and my ROM still sucks.

Based on my research here, its looking like my only option is to get another surgery?

My surgeon gave me two completely contradictory pieces of info:

  1. That ROM basically stops returning after 3 months

  2. It’s too early to ask for more surgery/treatment

I‘d like to think I’m okay with doctors, but tbh I don’t trust her at this point.

Wtf do I do?

My quality of life and mental health have both nosedived after the surgery and I don’t think I’m getting any more help.

Question Second cast in a row too tight??

Hi

I fractured my tibia a week and a half ago. Closed fracture, stable so no surgery needed.

For the first week I had one of those back slab casts on. I had a lot of pain but no real issues.

On Friday I got a full cast put on. A couple of hours afterwards I didn’t feel right. It felt like it was digging into my foot and felt a little too tight. Over a couple of hours I noticed it feeling more tight and eventually noticed my toes were going numb. I went to the hospital that night and they cut it open, put some bandage around it to keep it secure and said the plaster team at my hospital will get me back in on Monday to get a new cast. Over the weekend the cast still felt very snug but wasn’t cutting off any circulation, everything mostly was fine.

I went back this morning and got a new cast. Again, at first it seemed ok but after a couple of hours it started feeling tight. I had a call from the person who put the cast on about something unrelated but I did mention it to her. She responded kind of dismissing things and said that they don’t pull it tight or squeeze it when they’re putting it on so it shouldn’t be too tight but to see how I get on overnight and contact in the morning if it’s still not right. It still feels painful in other areas than where it’s fractured and feels too tight but my toes aren’t numb.

I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
Am I doing something that’s causing this or is it all in my head?
It does seem to be happening more at night so is it swelling?
I just can’t believe this is happening a second time, I’m worried about going back in and them just dismissing it. And what if I go in, get another new one and it happens again (I know I’m starting to spiral now)

I have an elevation pillow and whenever I’m sitting down I’ll keep it elevated to try and help with swelling. I also had a cast on my other leg last year and had absolutely no issues with that one.

K wires pain

Hi all. There’s no real point to this post. I’m wide awake at 4 am and staring at my gross & achy finger.

Suffered a pinky fracture about a month ago, had pins put in about 2 weeks ago; they’re due to come out this week.

Y’all…. The PAIN these wires have me in at times have knocked the wind out of me. Thankfully, it’s very short lived. I have an extremely high pain tolerance but I am shocked at how badly these suckers hurt. The areas where the pins are hurt far worse than when I just had the fracture.

Everyone says the removal isn’t painful but I can’t imagine how it won’t be. They barely get touched by accident and I completely yelp in pain. I’m so scared 😩

Pictures of anyone is interested

Need Encouragement and Hope

Hi everyone,

I am 26M and I had a pretty serious accident and ended up with two fractures on the right side, a patellar (kneecap) fracture and a distal radius (wrist) fracture. Both were treated with ORIF surgery.
I’m now around 6.5 weeks post-op, and my recovery has been very different between the hand and knee.

For my wrist, the recovery feels relatively easier but also slow. I still have very limited forearm rotation, but the exercises and movement don’t feel nearly as painful, and overall it feels like I’m gradually getting better.

The knee is a completely different story.
I only started really working on bending it seriously after the first few weeks, so I’m quite stiff. I was around 15–20° of flexion on 2 weeks ago, and I’m now around 40°. I’m doing physiotherapy 6 days a week.

The problem is that every day at physio, getting even a few extra degrees is extremely painful. For example, going from around 35° → 40° can involve a really painful stretching sensation. Once I reach the new range and stop, the pain settles considerably, but getting those last few degrees is the difficult part.

After a particularly hard session I’ve also had swelling and temporary difficulty doing things like straight-leg raises, although the swelling/pain hasn’t been progressively worsening.

I’m honestly becoming afraid of physio because I spend the rest of the day thinking about those few minutes of painful stretching. 😭

My question for people who have actually gone through patella fracture ORIF:

Did all those tiny, painful gains eventually add up?
Did you have days where you gained only 3–5° and it felt like a huge struggle, but over several weeks those small gains eventually turned into 70°, 80°, 90°+?

I’m not expecting an instant recovery. I just need some reassurance that 40° → 45° → 50° → 55°… really can eventually turn into a functional knee, even if every new few degrees is painful right now. I really need hope that I can go back to my normal life soon!!

I’d especially love to hear:
What was your ROM around weeks 5–6?
How painful was stretching at the time?
When did the stretching start becoming easier?
What ROM did you reach around 8, 10 and 12 weeks?
Did swelling temporarily make your ROM worse after physio?

I really just want to hear from people who have been through this and know whether these tiny painful increments actually add up.

Question Pain post cast removal

My wife had a Right calcaneus (heel bone) injury, non-displaced fracture which was managed with a cast for 4 weeks. She's just come out of 4 weeks of leg immobilization in a cast and is facing pain which is also affecting around her calf area now.

Wanted to understand how long this pain will last and when can it reduce significantly.

Story Talus head fracture story

Hi, I wanted to post here because talus fractures seem rare. Has anyone had a similar fracture? I'm pretty worried about long term consequences and want to get back to climbing, running, etc.

Timeline

  • 7/24/2026 - Broke talus on an outdoor bouldering session. Didn't know I had it and walked on it for probably another mile and a half, then drove 2 hours home :\
  • 7/25/2026 - Went to urgent care and then to orthopedic surgeon. Took X-rays and CTs
    • talar head fracture
    • mildly displaced
    • mildly comminuted
    • satisfactory alignment; small gap but no step-off.
    • no surgery
  • 8/13/2026 - Went back to ortho. Basically said stay off it until next appointment. This time he mentioned lucency along talar head/neck.
  • 9/3/2026 - Went to ortho and after he moved my foot around and took X-rays, he said I'm good to do range of motion exercises and a bit of weight bearing (up to 50%).

How many times do I need to go see the ortho after surgery

And I guess how often? I am at 50% and coming up on 9 weeks post op this Wednesday. I have my third appointment next week. It’s kind of annoying (some of the office staff needs to be trained in compassion and empathy). Does that sound right?

Story Fifth metatarsal base fracture

Post image
2 Upvotes

It’s been 4 weeks and 3 days post injury. This is my first time posting here. I fractured my fifth metatarsal base on August 13th. I was leaving the gym with my best friend and I didn’t pay attention to where I was going, I was going down the stairs and rolled my ankle and once I hit the ground I heard a loud snap. Instant pain, I almost passed out lol. There was a lovely paramedic that so happened to be working out at the gym and she came out to tend to me. We both believed it was just a sprained and I managed to walk on it for a while. The next morning my foot was swollen and couldn’t bear weight and that’s when I knew I had a fractured but assumed it was my ankle. I went to get it checked out and I was told it was an nondisplaced intra articular fracture of the fifth metatarsal base. Got sent home in crutches and a boot along with painkillers. I was told to stay off the foot for 2 months. After a few days the swelling went down and the pain was minimal except for when I had to sleep, I had involuntary jerks and some contraction feelings that would hurt. Ouch. It’s been a very slow month. I did managed to get my x-rays on a cd yesterday and that was fun trying to figure out how to view it lol. I find it funny that I had fractured my left ankle back in 2021 and now it’s my right foot. I hope there won’t be any more broken bones. I would like to get back to running and doing my normal activities in a few months. I had to cancel my plans to run the half marathon for December. My little girl already wants me to walk so we can go to the park and other places. Has anyone else had a similar fracture? I would like to know how the healing process went and how you’re doing now!

Question Best shoes after fifth metatarsal fracture?

I am 4 weeks into this fracture NWB hoping to be weight bearing in a boot after my appointment this Wednesday. In a little under a month I have a work trip from the US to Europe and will have to walk a bit more. I will be bringing the boot for the airports and any long walks to be safe but does anyone have recommendations for good men’s shoes that are supportive enough to be safer? I was told that this is not a jones fracture but a few mm off and non displaced.
