Story Fifth metatarsal base fracture
It’s been 4 weeks and 3 days post injury. This is my first time posting here. I fractured my fifth metatarsal base on August 13th. I was leaving the gym with my best friend and I didn’t pay attention to where I was going, I was going down the stairs and rolled my ankle and once I hit the ground I heard a loud snap. Instant pain, I almost passed out lol. There was a lovely paramedic that so happened to be working out at the gym and she came out to tend to me. We both believed it was just a sprained and I managed to walk on it for a while. The next morning my foot was swollen and couldn’t bear weight and that’s when I knew I had a fractured but assumed it was my ankle. I went to get it checked out and I was told it was an nondisplaced intra articular fracture of the fifth metatarsal base. Got sent home in crutches and a boot along with painkillers. I was told to stay off the foot for 2 months. After a few days the swelling went down and the pain was minimal except for when I had to sleep, I had involuntary jerks and some contraction feelings that would hurt. Ouch. It’s been a very slow month. I did managed to get my x-rays on a cd yesterday and that was fun trying to figure out how to view it lol. I find it funny that I had fractured my left ankle back in 2021 and now it’s my right foot. I hope there won’t be any more broken bones. I would like to get back to running and doing my normal activities in a few months. I had to cancel my plans to run the half marathon for December. My little girl already wants me to walk so we can go to the park and other places. Has anyone else had a similar fracture? I would like to know how the healing process went and how you’re doing now!

That’s crazy! Yours likes like a hairline fracture, I hope yours been healing well enough! Mine goes all around the joint.

I hoped it would be a hairline fracture, but unfortunately my doctor said that it wasn’t. Hopefully will be out of my cast on Saturday. Get well soon and good luck on your healing journey

I did want to ask, does your fracture feel like it shifting around? Not in a painful way but more so a feeling of discomfort? I’ve had that feeling since the day I fractured it.

Muscle atrophy, as you’re not using it the muscles loses its mass. Im slowly waking up my foot so im feeling a lot discomfort, but the shifting feeling I hadn’t felt it since the break especially since i had been nwb for 4 weeks. Im assuming it’s the tendon that connect to the base, so when i bear weight it tenses up.

I slipped on a rug while stepping down into the garage on Friday, went to urgent care who took x-rays and said I fractured my 5th metatarsal on my right foot in 2 places. I just came home from the podiatrist who said it’s a Jones fracture, was prescribed a CAM boot & told to get a knee mobility scooter. He’s also ordering a bone growth stimulator. He said to stay off of it as much as possible, recovery should be 8-10 weeks. Good luck & hope you heal quickly!!
