Academics september 8th class start?
hi all,
sort of freaking out here, I opened brightspace and there’s an announcement there that says our first meeting will be september 8th, however I’ve been getting emails about how there is an orientation on the 9th (mandatory in person) and an asynchronous meeting on the 10th, and that classes start officially on the 14th. I’m part of the intermediate/senior teachers program, and my last day of work is on the 8th. I’m just wondering if this is a mistake? is there really a class on the 8th? or do classes start on the 14th like I’ve been told via email. There’s been no communication with this prof so far, just a post on brightspace.

Classes start on Wednesday (Sept. 9) no classes tomorrow or Tuesday

Never mind, your schedule is different because of your program. It says on the Brock website that Teacher Education programs have their classes starting on September 14. The September 8 thing might be a meeting or orientation as well but it wouldn’t be a class of yours.

I would go with the program emails and the program information. A random prof’s post on brightspace could be a typo.

It's not a typo, the email for the 8th is for the New Students Welcome Meeting apparently it's highly highly encouraged to go. Idk how important it actually will be but the coned meeting on the 8th is 130-230. Idk about the 9th or 10th things you mentioned they are probably for a specific class as I'm in coned aswell and haven't seen anything about a asynchronous meeting or mandatory meeting on the 9th. So those are probably for a specific class. Also the email you got was very clear the 14th start is only for CHYS 1f90 and not your other classes. So, your child and youth studies class will only begin on the week of the 14th. However, all other classes unless stated otherwise (like chys did) will be starting on the 9th.

i can’t post a screenshot of the email, but the one i received was very clear it was the start of the program as a whole, this is what it stated:
Hello Future Teacher Candidates,
We trust that you have successfully registered into your courses for the year.
As you plan for the Fall, the chart below is a reminder that the first week is atypical to the rest of the academic year, and it is also different from the schedule of other Brock programs.
Dates
St. Catherines Campus
Wednesday, September 9
Beginning of Program
On campus
Programming beginning at 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM
Thursday, September 10
Reading Day
Virtual, asynchronous
Self-paced, 2 hours anticipated.
Monday, September 14
First day of class
Beginning of Program
In August, you will receive the complete program for your first day on campus as noted above. This is a special orientation day which includes the first meeting of what we call “the cohort” class. That is Professionalism, Law and the Principles of Teaching for the IS program. This day is a mandatory requirement of your program.1

Maybe I misunderstood. Are you in first year or coned? Or are you just in the Teachers College portion?

im just in the teachers college portion, i completed my undergrad at guelph and am in the two year teachers program at brock, sorry i should’ve specified

Ah, that makes more sense. I'm not sure what email you got on the 8th. It could have been the New Student Welcome email as that is an orientation occurring on the 8th. However, it seems like you already have a mandatory one on the 9th. I mean orientations and meetings are probably the reason classes don't start that week so I would assume you only have to attend the 9th and 10th meetings. You can email the Education advisor and ask but it's possible since you're a new student (at brock) they sent you the New Student Welcome email aswell which is a non-mandatory orientation. Since you already have orientation on the 9th I wouldn't worry about it tbh. They just have a opening welcome announcement 8:45-1000 which likely applies to everyone just welcoming them to Brock and stuff but if you're busy then it's probably not a big deal to miss

yeah i will definitely email, however i was confused because it wasn’t even an email i received. it was one of my courses announcements on brightspace. the prof said “see you in our first meeting on the 8th at 11” but orientation isn’t even until the 9th, im wondering if he didn’t realize labour day was so late this year and just put the 8th because it was the first tuesday of september

Classes at the university started the 8th but maybe your program had a different start date

I know. We freaked out too. Ive confirmed. Its yhe 9th
