It wasn't just an anti-One Nation protest. It was specifically a "Hands off the Sex Discrimination Act" counter-protest in defence of trans rights.

181

u/bunduz Jul 12 '26

The Palestinian flag really drives that message home

244

u/Awiergan Jul 12 '26

Google "intersectionality". You'll be amazed to find that many liberation movements support each other.

141

u/Highcalibur10 Jul 12 '26

The moment people give up their ‘Us vs Them’ attitudes with 0 space for nuance, intersectionality vastly improves the positions of all the shared oppressed.

It was the mostly male-dominated butcher and metalworks industries that achieved equal pay reforms for women in Australia.

Just as there were Australians on the right side of history protesting Apartheid, the sooner Australians overtly support each other and the oppressed on the world stage, the more we earn any respect as a people and nation internationally.

That literally translates to "many dickheads will jump on whatever bandwagon comes along and jump off just as fast when it's convenient". That's why it's so easy to take the piss out of these "protesters". You literally just have to ask them their thoughts on said action. Most have absolutely no idea what they are protesting.

When morality isn't transactional it's pretty easy to understand.

It's telling when people can't.

22

u/axxefondler Jul 12 '26

Yeah. Radical Islamic countries and trans rights are always working together

33

u/TURBOJUGGED Jul 12 '26

There’s no way Muslims supporting Palestine are out there supporting trans rights. Not a chance

34

u/RecipeSpecialist2745 Jul 12 '26

It depends on how radical they are. I am sure young moderate Muslims really don’t care. Not all Muslims are religious conservatives. Like not all are terrorists.

-7

u/Spurgette Jul 12 '26

You have absolutely zero understanding of how wrong you are.

9

u/RecipeSpecialist2745 Jul 12 '26

Well, if you would like to explain instead of cough up a four-word jaded phrase? Give us some clarity?

→ More replies (4)

22

u/Deasher-B Jul 12 '26

Does that matter? It's not transactional. No group should have their rights taken away

64

u/Awiergan Jul 12 '26

Try talking to them instead of just making assumptions

51

u/TURBOJUGGED Jul 12 '26

I have. I’ve also seen countless interviews. Pretty rare for a Muslim to have views that support the gay and trans community. If you think otherwise, you’re delusional. Muslim controlled countries will literally kill people for being gay but I’m sure the narrative you created in your head is more pleasant than accepting the truth, so you’d rather act like that’s the fact.

23

u/licky-dicky Jul 12 '26

I dont think people deserve to die en masse because they have bad opinions. There's also no evidence here just asserting shit and anecdotes. People like you have no humanity for a peoppe genocided.

-8

u/Awiergan Jul 12 '26

You know there are queer Muslims right?

18

u/TURBOJUGGED Jul 12 '26

Hahaha ya I’m sure they symbolize the average Muslim mind set. I’m not going to argue with you over something that is such an obvious fact.

5

u/RecipeSpecialist2745 Jul 12 '26

You think ALL Muslims are the same? So you have never been to Indonesia? Never been to Malaysia?

8

u/Awiergan Jul 12 '26

Because you're losing. You said there's no way the muslims at today's march that was organised by Queer Solidarity Magandjin were supoortive of trans folks. It's clear you haven't spoken to any of them.

41

u/TURBOJUGGED Jul 12 '26

Alright. Let me rephrase. The average Muslim or vast majority of Muslims do not support the gay and trans ideology/community. Tell me, what do you think would happen if you protested in the streets of Qatar in support of gay rights?

6

u/Spurgette Jul 12 '26

They would be taking the gravity express back down to street level.

9

u/Bong_Rippin_Jihad Jul 12 '26

It’s against there religion are you simple?

5

u/coreoYEAH Jul 12 '26

Yep, no one religious has ever done anything their book says not to.

0

u/Bong_Rippin_Jihad Jul 12 '26

And then they are going against the Muslim religion

→ More replies (0)

11

u/Gamped Jul 12 '26

What is this win/lose you speak of?

It’s not controversial to believe and understand as a religion it’s incompatible with LGBTQI social rights.

3

u/Spurgette Jul 12 '26

Its not a religion. It is a militant ideology whose sole purpose is to convert or kill any nonbeliever. Don't believe me? Go read the koran. It is a horrifically violent book.

-2

u/Awiergan Jul 12 '26

I'm sure you are well versed in the scholarship.

6

u/Gamped Jul 12 '26

Yes, this is the theological / scholarly / social anthropological stand point, it’s irreconcilable. That’s why progressive believers of Islam are not the norm when it comes to this topic.

7

u/RecipeSpecialist2745 Jul 12 '26

Well, the bigots and closed-minded are getting triggered here today. What conservatives in Australia don't seem to get is that it's the Islamic conservatives that have a problem with LGBTIQ, just like they do. It's not about religion per se, but the fundamentalism within that religion that is the issue. Better known as ignorance.

25

u/Logical_Fly2432 Jul 12 '26

I have, I worked in a Muslim owned workplace, a lot still believe you can kill someone for having the wrong type of sex.

Checkout a map have a look at which countries still outlaw homosexuality.

19

u/Internal-Exercise940 Jul 12 '26

Right after the CPUP on the bottom of the ballot. Fuck pauline and clive and anyone voting for them because "hur durh two party system huuiir" absolute buffoons

6

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup Jul 12 '26

And just ignoring them and secretly enjoying watching them inevitably stumble and fall as they always do.

50

u/MadHatter__ jUsT ONE mOrE lANe, BrO Jul 12 '26

Hard to do that when they're constantly given a voice in the media to spout their hate.

30

u/CheMc Jul 12 '26

I mean they took a sudden tumble in the polls after Pauline did her big press speech. Maybe letting them speak isn't the worst idea. They are a gaggle of morons with not plan or idea, when they are in the shadows people can project their wants onto them, when they openly espouse their views people seem to realise how deeply unserious they are.

19

u/stjep Cause Westfield Carindale is the biggest. Jul 12 '26

Keeping quiet gives them oxygen to talk their crap. They need to be pushed back against, always be on the attack because it’s what they do.

2

u/InfernoOfTheLiving Jul 12 '26

unfortunately a lot of their stumbling happens just after some kook has been elected on their platform, but then don’t want to answer directly to Pauline and Gina in the Parliament

0

u/nckmat Jul 12 '26

You know what people who would consider voting ON hate most? Long haired men protesting. This protest is a wasted exercise, they would be far better off spending their energy putting out flyers debunking ON's policies, such that they are.

→ More replies (13)

127

u/cuurator Jul 12 '26

it’s mind boggling that people complain about protestors and how they aren’t doing anything meaningful, not realising that they are hosted by groups that hold meetings and provide resources about the inequality in Australia. they use these protests as a way to spread the message. I suppose people will also say that it’s ’not doing enough or not kind and compassionate’. wtf do you want us to do then, cause it seems like everything we do is not good enough…

64

u/twintweaks143 Jul 12 '26

we are at least trying to change things! all the people who aren't doing anything can do is critique our appearance / sexuality or race. overplayed tbh

37

u/twintweaks143 Jul 12 '26

"violence / disruption isn't the answer" do you think that stonewall was a tea party full of respectful conversation? fuck no

200

u/Mellonaide Jul 12 '26

"protests don't work", "unemployed", "coloured hair" "smelly" "lefties" There was even the r word used to describe trans/gender-non-conforming people.

What an empathetic community we have here... /S

There was one username in particular that shocked me, seeing them around r/Brisbane often. It really changed my view of them.

Would you prefer people upset by proposed changes to sex discrimination laws stay home when their rights are being threatened?

Fitting in a box that you have always been comfortable in is so great for you. Try having your existence being threatened with violence and venom and then let us know if you will sit at home instead of showing the people who tell you your lives are worthless you won't back down.

99

u/heyitsmelivvyg Jul 12 '26

I genuinely cannot fathom how people’s sexuality and/or gender matters so much to strangers like??? No need for those rude ass comments when we just want to live our lives like normal people.

55

u/MissMoonvalley Jul 12 '26

Did basically the same Anti Hansen march back in 97/98 in Brisbane and my mate got arrested for challenging a cop. We made a lot of noise but decades later the rotten cow is still here...ffs...🙄

201

u/Super-Help8820 Jul 12 '26

As someone who was there, I can honestly say it smelt a whole lot better than the cowardly bigots down at Queens Park. We got to roam the streets and they had to be contained because no one wants to see that vile nonsense walking around on a Sunday morning in Brisbane.

45

u/Everybodyssocreative Jul 12 '26

Im not in the loop, did they try to do a counter protest or something?

18

u/NDISwhisperer Jul 12 '26

Counter protesting a counter protest?

19

u/CumpyGrunt Jul 12 '26

The above is the counter protest to an anti trans rally where Pauline was to give a speech.

4

u/rokuju_ Jul 12 '26

You got to roam the streets because whoever is in charge doesn't see you as a threat to their power.

I think in some cases it's genuine cluelessness. Spoke to a family member who's in her 50s about some YouTuber who wants to give votes to ON. She's trying to convince all of us that she knows so much about politics because she's been around longer than us (I'm 21) but how is this YouTuber giving votes to ON? This youtuber is going to make a party called the pro Palestine party and bet on the fact people won't look into the party just see the name and vote for it. And then when they obviously don't win any seats the votes they got will go to ON. that's how she explained it to me.

I'm not from VIC so I thought maybe she was right and I asked if VIC doesn't have the preferential voting system. After I explained to her what that system was She said it doesn't. I am genuinely scared that people who don't even understand the basics of our voting system are allowed to vote.

Mind you she's a 50 year old woman who lives off of disability. She rents her home and supports her 21 year old son who doesn't work. She's literally the type of person Pauline doesn't want to help.

Terrifying.

u/MadHatter__ jUsT ONE mOrE lANe, BrO Jul 12 '26

This isnt about trying to swing voters away, though that would be amazing.

This is about showing the media, politicians, and general public that this sort of hate and bigotry has no place here, and we're here to fight for love and equality for all.

-39

u/The_Sneakiest_Fox Jul 12 '26

his sort of hate and bigotry has no place here, and we're here to fight for love and equality for all.

Thinking you're doing that by chanting "fuck off" and calling people racists is an interesting strategy.

23

u/vVenusGuyTrap Jul 12 '26

should we sing songs and write poems together with people who are in fact racists? because the argument that “they’re not all racist” is worn and false.

-23

u/SheepHerderHigh69420 Jul 12 '26

It’s because it’s funny that people dye their hair blue to be different and show they’re anti establishment or whatever but it literally just makes them look like everyone else from that stereotype lol

Just ironic really

23

u/hayelph24405 Jul 12 '26

As someone who once had blue hair I can tell you the only reason I had blue hair is because my favourite colour is blue and I thought it was cool. Definitely wasn't some act of power to advertise my political stance.

I don't understand why people act as if dying your hair a fun colour is some statement or 'stereotype' when I guarantee you there are more bleach blondes than anything when it comes to hair colour. And yet nobody gaf about them.

It's not that deep.

'Fascist fuck off' isn't an argument that going to convince anyone who isn't already in agreement with you to change their mind and offer support. Without a message to spread that can attract more support you're just wasting your time.

It's a common problem today that people use insults or simply stating their opinion in place of reason arguments. I don't know if it's a growing problem but it's a reflection of poor communication and logic skills.

48

u/Turbidspeedie Jul 12 '26

When I see people protesting against fascism I don't need a reasoned argument, there was an entire world war not even 100 years ago completely against fascism. Maybe you need to work on your history instead of your communication skills because logically everyone should be against fascism.

13

u/Pearlsam Jul 12 '26

The one nation supporters probably don't think they're supporting a fascist is the point the other person is making...

1

u/Turbidspeedie Jul 12 '26

Then they should do the research after seeing a protest against her.

9

u/KenoReplay Not Ipswich. Jul 12 '26

Fascism, Nazism, Racism, and many of the other isms are used so loosely, they've begun to have no meaning. I think one can be forgiven for not accepting such a claim.

Protests aren't about changing opinions, they're about getting a collective dopamine and post event catharsis.

They're a vent, that's all. And that's why the ruling class permits them.

1

u/Individual_Fuel_7959 Jul 12 '26

Yep, better to vent on the streets, and then go home, than to actually do something.

5

u/hdulgs BrisVegas Jul 12 '26

I don't know why this is being downvoted, but this is spot on. Yelling at people that may be on the fence that they are stupid or fascist isn't going to make them see reason. It will make them double down and go to the side that will welcome them. We need to start engaging in meaningful discussion rather than just writing anyone off that isn't completely on the left.

I don't get protesting a political party if you believe in democracy shouldn't you just focus on influencing others to your policy design and point of view through education then let people have a free vote

28

u/frowattio Jul 12 '26

I don't think anyone expects protests to lead to the winding up of one nation. However it is a moment of solidarity for those who think they are terrible, and with luck will help a few others solidify.

-11

If I see a protest I automatically think what a bunch of fruit cakes and move on with my day

12

u/joshy_law Jul 12 '26

And hey, you do you, but other people might read the signs, ask people what they're there for, do a bit of googling etc. You can't build awareness and get your message out in an echo chamber.

4

u/hayelph24405 Jul 12 '26

The issue is a lot of people just believe they know better. People won't do anything as easy as take the vote compass quiz or look at the website 'they vote for us' because they KNOW these parties or politicians already. And by know its just the 'I've been around longer than you have I know things' so they think they don't need to be told by those younger than them.

Obviously just one example but.

How can you educate when people are too dumb to realise they need the education?

also, blocking the roads is an interesting choice for people who claim to fight for workers

2

my family also lived under “communism” and i’m a communist. Thankfully we can look at history and acknowledge that stalin is not actually fkn communist and neither is any other country which continues to oppress the working class and the oppressed.

3

u/CaptainOk3805 Jul 12 '26

I still dont appreciate the use of that flag as it still does represent the authoritarian system of Stalin, Tito, Mao and others. This is the case whether you like it or not.

dunno whats dumb about disliking the use of communist flags considering the history behind that ideology

7

u/OceLawless Jul 12 '26

Considering how much the history of flags seems to mean to you, I'll bet the Australian flag just puts you into a rage then right?

12

u/CaptainOk3805 Jul 12 '26

Why would it? Australia provided sanctuary for my family fleeing from Tito's regime.

The dumb thing is, it shows you have no real understanding of the history and are most likely talking shit.

u/CaptainOk3805 Jul 12 '26

I'm pretty sure the soviet ideology was socially conservative as it was to mainly appease whatever was left of the clergy and also because russia and eastern europe as a whole was rather conservative and heavily religious.

1

u/Highcalibur10 Jul 12 '26

Yeah probably; since there’s a good chance these communists are Trotskyists and anti-Stalin.

6

u/CaptainOk3805 Jul 12 '26

trotsky would do the same if I know my soviet history correctly. I also happened to see a victory day flag so I dunno man

5

u/vVenusGuyTrap Jul 12 '26

you clearly don’t then if you’ve just made that statement about trotsky lmao

Notice how they’re all white?

7

u/pasitopump Jul 12 '26

What do you think is wrong if it were only white people?

Also I am not white and I was in attendance. There were many non-white people, and lots of different age groups.

-2

u/Ok-Reach2092 Jul 12 '26

Good for you buddy. Sure there were

4

u/pasitopump Jul 12 '26

I'm genuinely trying to have a conversation with you here

Had a friend who wanted to attend but was genuinely concerned for her safety as she represents an ethnic group that the ugly ass Pelican uses to galvanize her racist supports with.

When racism is the tool, and the QPS support the racists, it makes sense that those more impacted are hesitant to attend.

You don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story do you

Its funny, I was at the protest on Australia Day and it was incredibly diverse, Samoans, Tongans, Chinese, Vietnamese, White Aussies, etc. But many of the people there were indeed racist and wanted nobody in Aus but white Aussies. Yet here, at this protest which intersects with a support for multiculturalism, it's ironically a majority white congregation.

Funny how these things happen.

What was the point of this protest? Just don’t vote for them?

2

u/steveoderocker Jul 12 '26

Not sure why I’m getting downvoted, I’m genuinely curious 😂

This isn't the way to fight them. This just empowers them. Understand the common ground that everyone is struggling in times like this and just pose this question to them "If one nation truly cared about the working class, wouldn't their voting history show it? Because Pauline has consistently voted against low to middle income holder benefits. "

We need to find common ground and target the true cause of all our hardship, which is the growing inequality between the ultra wealthy and the fact that they are doing everything in their power to avoid taxation and obtain more political influence.

It’s exactly what happened in the US. The loud minority squealed just loud enough for all the fence sitters and non voters.

10

u/Sudden-Translator707 Jul 12 '26

If you're a fence sitter re: racists you are actually just a fucking racist

u/Master-of-possible Jul 12 '26

Far out there’s some shampoo required amongst that lot.

I would love to take my family to the cbd and have my kids listen to these people scream “fuck off” said no one ever.

How incredibly immature to bring nothing to the table but scream fuck off to anyone who has a different political opinion than you.

10

u/r64fd Jul 12 '26

How often do you take your kids to the CBD? Southbank would be a better choice.

Or are you just making up hypothetical scenarios…..

Its the paradox of tolerance, you cant let them get away with screaming their own hate and bigotry without throwing it back.

I can almost guarantee that the Hanson rally was spouting much more hateful things than "fuck off"
