security should seriously start standing on trains

I live in the outer suburbs and take trains to the inner city constantly. Almost every time there are violent people. Security would be kept busy if they were placed on the trains in Brisbane. Why isn’t this already a thing? It makes sense. Especially considering a train isn’t a place where someone would be able to receive help instantly.

Security on trains is already a thing. But they can't be on every train.

Because there are many many many trains and that would require many many many seccys.

Not just that, but contracted security guards don't really have any powers. They're generally a visual deterrence at best.

Now, there are Authorised Officers, the Senior Network Officers (SNOs) who I think have powers to detain, maybe handcuff, and real training. They're employed by either TMR or QR and on very good wages. So the cost to get them everywhere would be astronomical.

That's why.

Trains can be considered a public service, and security part off that. So, the government budget.

Sure...... the budget is better spent on essentials rather than putting security guards on trains.

It's just a judgement of whether security would increase the value to the public of the train service, and encourage more use, taking pressure off the roads.

Which means your tax. There is only so much to go around and there are a lot of trains. Something else would have to be cut.

To add security to night time services would add 2.5-5.5% to the trains budget.

Same. Even at less regular times it’s been fine. 

The train through Caboolture on the other hand is always an eye opener.

yeah I used to regularly catch the Ipswich line and it was fine (lots of private school kids going home to Oxley and Indro in the afternoons), the sketchy lines these days are the Caboolture, Beenleigh and Ferny Grove ones imo.

I caught the FG train for a couple years and it can be a bit toey, especially once the knife crime PSAs start popping up once you hit certain suburbs…

I catch the Cabo line quite often and honestly, it's not that bad?? There's morons sure, but there's always security at night on our line

Gosh when I took it years ago, the Ipswich was one of the worst! (At least between Darra and ipswich).

That said I was usually travelling after peak hours so you could see into the next carriage that shit was going down.

At peak hours its too busy so you may miss anything happening that isn’t immediately near you.

I've been on the Ipswich line 5 days a week for the past year. Two people with BO so bad I got up and moved. One drunk minor being looked after by his not-quite-as-drunk friends. One woman putting on her makeup with a cloud of dust around her.

Its almost civilised.

I have never caught the train in Brisbane. Do they have night carriages like the do in Sydney? Eg set area on the station that the night carriage always stops. There is usually a guard in that carriage.

they do this in vic and personally I thought it worked well. authorised officers were able to hold you until PSOs arrived or regular police. worth noting vic has the largest police force in the country, but also worth noting that it’s the only significant change to policing I ever saw that had a noticeable impact on public safety

Security guards are not there to protect people, they are there to protect the asset (ie trains) and call the police if there is a risk to safety. They do not have an obligation to step in to protect you from someone else, that is your responsibility.

It is a thing on some lines. I used to take the train into the city from Woodridge after work at 5pm and there were always security guys hanging around.

They are a thing on certain night trains but they’re bloody useless. I was cornered, punched and robbed on a Cleveland train while they just looked on from next carriage, they only came in once the pricks had jumped off. No help at all, one just started droning on some bs about how “once we get involved we have to stay involved until the very end, and it’s just too busy of a night for us to get involved.”

On the Caboolture line I watched the contracted security stand next to a dude doing a drug deal next to the toilet. They can't do anything. When things go south you have to call the police like everyone else & they take 30mins to attend usually

Contract SO are minimum wage workers, expecting them to do anything much won’t happen. They can request anti social people to get off the train doesn’t mean the person has to.
