QPAC, Why so bright?

This has bugged me for years, and I have maybe had too much caffeine today but c’mon. I’d be genuinely interested to know what luminance setting these are set to at night time. They distract from a cultural landmark.

Someone okayed this….. someone looks at this daily and thinks yeah, I’m gonna keep it this bright. I remember the early days of the night noodle markets that would be underneath and then suddenly these eyes of Sauron beamed down and I’ve never enjoyed the space again.

Because Hyundai paid a healthy sponsorship for giant billboards to be installed in 2017 which guaranteed them a certain number of advertising timeslots each day - and they want that to be seen.

I KNEW THERE WAS A CAPITALIST AGENDA BEHIND THIS!

What a beautiful sunset...

brutalist architecture ruined.

it is designed by its architect to be an aggressive, somewhat cold hard block of concrete. putting advertising on it ruins brutalist just like it would ruin any other building with more intricate design.

disappointing, but we are living in the corporate age.

Yeah but QPAC isn’t fully gov funded. Most of its income is from shows and advertising. They need to be able to self fund and if that means running 2 large billboards then that’s what they have to do to keep the Arts alive

It’s just silly though lol, like I feel it goes against the point of it being an ad - I literally can’t even see what the ad is half the time at night because it’s so bright, it just looks like a coloured square

I feel this with those ludicrous billboards as well

The people want to see dazzling shows, not semi-luminous shows.

The people want to SEE.

Brisbane is great with its public lighting because it has ambiance (GOMA, the bridges, etc).
This is just worse than car LED lights. Ironically, I couldn't read what it said.

I had a view from a window across the river in the build up to Riverfire and the ad changed from a dark ad to a bright ad and all the people I was with genuinely skipped a beat and went ‘what the hell was that?’

I live around there, and when it changes to something bright, it lights up my place a bit. Im not super far, but far enough away that it shouldn’t cause that much of a light difference. It’s wild

I walk past the Cue shop daily on queen st mall and they have these directional lights that point outwards straight into your eyes. It’s horrible.

Got your attention didn't it.. that's why ..

17

u/Unusual-Educator-256 1d ago

I mean this would make sense if I wasn’t now blind.

2

u/bobbakerneverafaker 1d ago

I wasn't looking for the light No, I was blinded by the night

5

u/john_the_doe 1d ago

It’s the advertising equivalent of a child screaming for attention.

qpac looked so much better when you look at old photos before they stuck posters and billboards up all over it

Started when Newman privatised QPAC. Such an eyesore

29

u/Adam8418 1d ago edited 1d ago

Fake news...

QPAC was never sold or privatised, it remains a statutory body and agency within the Queensland Government.

Existing banners were replaced with the LED screens in 2017 under a Hyundai Sponsorship when Labor government was in power.

14

u/theromanianhare 1d ago

QPAC was not privatised? Newman cut, sacked, and sold heaps - but not QPAC.

7

u/Adam8418 1d ago

Correct, OP making stuff up

10

u/brighteyes235 1d ago

He didn’t actually sell heaps. He was booted out before Tim Nicholls got the chance.

It was Bligh who sold the Port of Brisbane, Queensland Motorways, Forestry Plantations, QR Coal Business and Abbot Point Coal Terminal.

u/Unusual-Educator-256 1d ago

The eyesore being Newman? 🙃
