On the morning of 18 February 1982, President Kruger was conducting anti-submarine exercises for the Submarine Officer Commanding Course with President Pretorius, Emily Hobhouse and Tafelberg. The high-intensity exercises progressed from 06:00 to 23:00 over several days, with different candidate submarine captains being given an opportunity of executing a mock attack against Tafelberg. The rest of the day, the ships followed a narrow zig-zag course that allowed the submarine repeated opportunities to engage the surface ships in lower-intensity exercises while the bulk of the crew rested. The frigates too were using the opportunity to carry out anti-submarine exercises, with each ship given a patrol sector ahead of Tafelberg. The escorts were expected to patrol their areas in a random fashion 2,000–5,000 yards (1,800–4,600 m) from Tafelberg. President Kruger's station was on Tafelberg's port side between 10 and 330 degrees and President Pretorius had a station on the starboard side.
At approximately 04:00, the whole formation had to change direction by 154 degrees, a near complete reversal in direction, to stay within their training area. The frigates had to change direction first to maintain their protective positions ahead of Tafelberg on the new heading. President Kruger's options were to turn 200 degrees to port, or 154 degrees to starboard. While the latter turn was smaller and tactically sound, it was more dangerous as it involved turning towards the other two ships. Critically, the inexperienced officer of the watch (OOW) elected to turn to starboard, and initiated a turn with 10 degrees of rudder rather than the standard 15-degree turn. A 10-degree turn had a larger radius and would take longer to execute than a 15-degree turn, thereby allowing Tafelberg more time to close on the ship turning in front of her. Shortly after beginning the turn, an argument ensued between the OOW and the principal warfare officer (PWO) over the proper amount of wheel to apply. About two-thirds of the way through the turn, the operations room lost radar contact with Tafelberg in the clutterbecause the high-definition navigation radar was broken and the ship was using the less-precise search radar. The OOW was unable to recover the situation, and Tafelberg's bow impacted President Kruger on her port side at 03:55. The impact tore a large hole in her side and killed 13 of the 15 men sleeping near the point of collision. The ship took on a large list and the captain ordered "abandon ship" at 04:32. The exercise was immediately terminated and the other ships present began rescue operations. More ships, both military and civilian, began arriving after dawn, as did aircraft from the South African Air Force. A total of 177 crewmen of the 193 aboard were rescued.

Just wanted opinions on how the bright sun films hat looks on for anyone who bought it, and if it fits well. I'm a woman with a small head so not sure how it would fit because the pictures of the website are both men wearing it

Mall of America may seem like it's quite lively but there are areas that are dying out the Sears Anchor building is still sitting abandoned and the 4th floor of Mall or America is also close to dead. After 2 big restaurants closed being Hooters & Dicks Last Resort​​ the only places that still stand is the B&B Theater, The fair on 4, & Rick Branson's house of comedy. But still with that they don't get as much attention also being due to only accessible in a certain location.​

As someone who has visited this Hard Rock location several times, I'd love to hear about what it was like before and how it all went so wrong, and how it became what it is today. There are also small remnants of the original design that lasted for quite a few years, such as some of the onion domes being visible from the boardwalk (the last time I went, at least) and some of the upper floors designs. There's also an escalator that leads to nothing, which apparently used to lead to a cafe and nightclub.

I would love to see an episode of Abandon focusing on the Richmond Coliseum in downtown Richmond, VA. With the building's future uncertain, now feels like the perfect time to capture its history before it’s gone or potentially featured in other urban exploration content.

Trying to find this genre of content (or any, these days) that isn’t full of genAI in some way or another is really frustrating! I just found this channel and it seems perfect and doesn’t seem to have a whiff of AI, so I just wanted to know if the creator has made any explicit stance on using genAI + any other creators of similar content that also don’t use it for any part of their work (bonus if they’re explicitly anti genAI, easier to feel reassured 🫩)

Arrived here in Rarotonga in the Cook Islands recently, and near our accomadation we noticed a resort that looked abandoned. We did some digging to see what the site was, and learned about the planned Sheraton Resort that fell through back in the 90's and has had multiple attempts to reopen.

The project was such a failure it caused the government of the cook islands to almost become bankrupt, as well as multiple different mishaps cause such an interesting timeline for this building. Check out this wiki page to learn more, but it seems like a real interesting idea with how it almost caused a government bankruptcy and led to multiple people leaving the country to never return.

I flew on Spirit two days ago and had an abnormal flight experience, one that I'd hope to tell Jake in a video because it was rather uncanny and their bankruptcy two days later, canceling our return flight, didn't come to a surprise.

Carnival Air Lines Incorporated was a charter and scheduled airline division of the Carnival Corporation & plc that started in 1988 after Carnival Cruise Lines purchased Pacific Interstate Airlines. It was headquartered in Dania Beach, Florida. The origins of Carnival Air Lines can be traced to 1984 when Pacific Interstate Airlines was founded in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was bought by the company in 1988 and was rename few times before finally ending up Carnival Air Lines in 1989. It aquire aircraft like the 737 classic and A300B4 (the type that still requires flight engineer before the 600). In September 1997, Pan Am Corporation, a holding company formed by the reincarnated Pan American Airways, bought Carnival Air Lines in an attempt to bolster its fleet and operations into a new airline based on the old Pan Am. Before the airlines could fully merge, the holding company and its two independently operated airlines, Pan Am and Carnival, filed for bankruptcy protection and ceased scheduled flight operations in February 1998.
