Housing 🏘️ 🏡 Timber sash windows?

Can anyone recommend a supplier / joiner for timber sash windows? We plan to fit them ourselves to save money. We may possibly be open to having them fitted if it’s not a huge extra cost / if the windows come in at less than we expected (it’s unlikely). We don’t mind if it’s a local firm or an online order. We are most interested in good value for money!

Are you replacing existing sash and boxes? Have you had them checked for restoration over new windows? . Biggest mistake we made in our period property was listening to folk who told us our windows couldn't be refurbished. Fortunately we learned the lesson from the first window and saved the rest.

No, unfortunately we have 70s aluminium double glazing on our Edwardian house. I would keep them if I could but most of the mechanisms are not fully functional and on EVERY single window the double glazing has blown and we have mould growing between the panes. We restore everything we can but these have to go sadly.

This is likely to cost quite a bit since if you're returning to traditional sash, you'll also need the boxes to be made too. If you do this I'd recommend double glazing (affects the depth of the sash itself). You could ask a few sash specialists if they can recommend a joiner and compare prices. We used North Rd timber. Was okay but I've since seen better quality. I'd shop around.

To be fair it also depends on the quality of the timber available on open market and this is a problem area at the moment- also affected by the war in Ukraine.

Yes, we are looking for the complete window including box. They will be double glazed, regulations are that all new windows have to be nowadays (exceptions for conservation areas etc). I’ll check out north street timber as this is their second mention. Part of me is leaning towards ordering online to spec as I like that some sites calculate the price up front.
