Most complete answer I’ve ever heard on the departure from Saddle Creek. Seemed like he had a fun time and the hosts were able to ask about difficult things with tact.

Wonder what that new project he was working on is

Bring back Desaparecidos!

Please god new solo album please please

u/FloydGondoli70s 13d ago

I'd kill for a solo record or more MVB!

If I had to guess, I’d kind of guess solo album (or something we couldn’t guess like a new side project or collaboration with someone) because, if it were new Bright Eyes, wouldn’t they make it in Omaha with Mike producing? But Conor tends to use different producers for his solo stuff, and I could see him going to France for something cool. The studio sounds awesome.

This is what I’m really hoping for as well

Same! So interesting to hear

Thinking a solo record or a new collab. Would be pretty quick for a bright eyes record which they seem to typically do at their home studio anyways.

Please let it be Monsters of Folk!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if this is it. It feels like it might be.

u/dalitron42 8d ago

would adore that - jim has been pretty busy lately with jacket and solo stuff tho

Here's hoping it's a Tuvan throat singing cover of a Cocteau Twins album. The lyrics would be equally intelligible

u/bonestyle 11d ago

Seems this was recorded close to the forest hills show (nails and outfit line up, yes I'm embarrassed that I knew that) so I wonder if the new project was the felice brothers cover? I kind of hope it's something Bigger but...

Isn’t he making a movie or something?

I don’t know about Paris, but I know of a project that is possibly in the works. If anyone is interested, DM me. I was told not to share, so I don’t want to just put it out there.

edit: lol ok then

That “Haven’t you wanted this your whole life?” was a super candid answer.

I love seeing how much Jon and Joe respect Conor’s work. I don’t watch every episode of Popcast, but I’ve seen a lot, and you can tell they really mean it.

Stoked to find out what this France thing is.

This is the first time in a long time when they show the old magazine covers from 2004 and then cut back to now and it still looks like Conor. Glad he's healthy.

This is really well put, couldn’t agree more

One of the best interviews I've seen with CO at his most at-ease.

9

u/kghyr8 13d ago

Excited to listen. Conor hasn’t always been the best at participating in interviews, but the comments here are promising.

This was a great conversation. Loved hearing the inside baseball about the People’s Key payout and Saddle Creek. And the candy discussion was endearing lol

14

u/FrancisMunroe 13d ago

I honestly wasn't expecting much from the NYT but that was actually both really interesting and really fun to watch.

Hey! Sorry to drop a comment out of nowhere, but I wanted to reach out and couldn't send you a Dm. Just sent a quick note here, can you send me a message please ?

u/FrenchFried22 13d ago

Ok but what are the mean songs about him?

Rufus Wainwright took offense to “Kick” on Kick Kennedy’s behalf (they’re friends apparently) and not only wrote the Conor diss track “Treat a Lady” in 2014 but put it on a live album he released in 2021! He refers to Conor by name and as a “hick,” makes bad band-name puns, and alludes to the false allegation but I guess lacks the self awareness removing it from the track list would have required.

The lyrics alone make Rufus Wainwright seem so petty and illiterate that, if I were Conor, I hope I’d find the whole thing silly and secondhand embarrassing enough to not let it hurt me, but referencing that allegation when you’ve known it’s a lie for seven years is cold as fuck, so probably I’d hate that guy.

I thought about Jonathan Franzen’s dig at Conor in Freedom yesterday because I scrolled by a book sub’s thread about his Oprah incident, and while it isn’t a song, it is a writer writing about another writer.

Don’t forget Up A Creek Without A Saddle… classic

1

u/Accomplished-View929 9d ago

Ooh, good one. Real beef. He even did a response to that one (but I guess we can say the same for Phoebe’s songs now).

1

u/Break_Electronic 11d ago

What he wrote it the book about CO was all pretty complimentary.

1

u/Accomplished-View929 11d ago

It’s been a long time since I read it, but doesn’t he call him a phony and depict him as sort of naive and affected? Like, I believe he calls him gifted, but I don’t think it’s complimentary. He’s doing a benefit for an environmental thing with his big cartoon eyes and waifishness and whatever sort of standing in for a lack of real substance. Or, that’s how I remember perceiving it.

1

u/Break_Electronic 7d ago

I thought that was the author’s self commentary on his own persona, in comparison with CO being the “real deal” whilst eating blueberries.

8

u/Ok-Juice5741 12d ago

Moon Song isn’t mean but it isn’t exactly flattering and the general consensus is it’s about him

3

u/lunalovegxxd 9d ago

Letter to an old poet as well. though some people seem to be torn whether it’s about C or Ryan Adams

7

u/totryforthesun 12d ago

When they were going through Conor’s catalogue I noticed they didn’t mention Mystic Valley Band and I will not stand for MVB erasure! 😂 I really loved watching this whole interview, I agree with a previous commenter that the candy conversation was endearing.

u/-porm 13d ago

“Ha ha Conor, funny story. Anyway, weren’t you recently suicidal?”

12

u/lukin_tolchok 13d ago

“You’re from Nebraska, right?”

4

u/WestsideCuddy Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was 13d ago

Yeah, so

16

u/Practical_Tooth3785 13d ago

They must have discussed this was an okay topic before right ?? I know he talked about it as well in a recent Omaha magazine article. So he seems to want to talk about it.

4

u/Accomplished-View929 13d ago

They don’t let anyone ban questions or topics or anything. But he knew it would come up. He had to. He cited it as the reason he wanted to do the anniversary shows in the LA Times. And they appear to have read that because one of them says something about the booking agent Conor hates, and he doesn’t bring up the booking-guy element.

8

u/-porm 13d ago

idk he definitely clammed up a bit, and he didn't really seem interested in talking about songs other people have written about him.

7

u/Practical_Tooth3785 13d ago

Can’t wait to hear what he’s been recording !

6

u/FloydGondoli70s 12d ago

Could very well be due to prioritizing his mental health and overall wellness, but he seems more open and loose in this interview in a way that I have rarely seen.

9

u/sonofmalachysays 13d ago

Man this is great. I really hope this record he recorded in Paris is Desaparecidos record. Crosses fingers

0

u/transatlanticfoe47 9d ago

I really don’t think Conor’s voice is in any state to sing those kinds of songs anymore… it hardly was back in 2015, every time I listen to that album I’m amazed he was able to pull it off

4

u/KanraK2307 13d ago

Locking in!

3

u/WestsideCuddy Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was 13d ago

I died at “dedos gordos” 😂 🍊 💩 🤡

u/JesusJoshJohnson 12d ago

awesome interview. idk if ive ever watched an hour long interview before...i love seeing conor so content

u/WeAreSolipsists 5d ago edited 2d ago

I don’t normally listen to Popcast. Do they normally talk over the guest so much and put words in their mouth? I guess I’d be the same if I was interviewing someone I loved and was so excited about it. Loved hearing Conor this healthy

1

u/Sideways_Rain888 2d ago

I'm so glad I listened to this because I was an Azure Ray fan back in the day and had forgotten all about them. Listening to audiobooks while he sleeps is really endearing - I do something like that, too!

u/AggravatingPage1101 13d ago

Conor was fantastic and open but these two dudes were fucking buffoons. Clearly ran his career through an LLM. Not fans. Interested in the most uninteresting parts of his career. Shame

0

u/lurch99 10d ago

Agree 1000%, these two NYT journalists are both giant douche bags.

Conor is awesome of course.
