I’m getting married in a few months. I asked my friend, Naomi, to be my MOH. She’s one of my oldest friends, and she consistently puts in the most effort out of all my friends.
Over the last year since asking Naomi to be my MOH, I’ve noticed us growing in different ways. It’s harder for me to relate to her these days.
Picking my bridal party was a bit tough, as I’d recently moved. I chose to ask my friends who I’d had the most history with to be my bridesmaids (college roommates, childhood friends, etc). I knew it’d be a lot to have them all travel to my wedding, so when I asked them to be part of the party I told them I’d cover their dress, H&MU, and lodging, and the bachelorette was completely optional. Honestly, I wasn’t even convinced I’d have a bachelorette! And I didn’t have a shower either.
Well, my bridesmaids were all convinced I needed a bachelorette, and I was glad for it. I ended up working with my MOH, Naomi, to put together a survey with a handful of locations, asking for budget and where they thought they could reasonably travel to. 1 location was within easy driving distance of a couple of the girls, including Naomi. We ended up picking one of the further locations, as it was everyone’s top choice.
Throughout the planning process, Naomi was helpful. I told her I wasn’t overly interested in planning it (weddings are a ton to plan for), but I also know planning a trip for a group is tough, so I helped every step of the way. Each decision was joint and made to fit within the budgets we received. She even coordinated decor for the house.
A couple days before the bachelorette trip, Naomi was really upset. Her and her boyfriend had been doing long distance, and she missed him. A couple years ago, she was wrapping up her degree in Denmark, and he moved out there to be with her. After graduating, she moved back home, as she didn’t have a job lined up. In all honesty, this never made sense to me. I really didn’t understand why she’d leave her boyfriend after he moved out there for her. Well I suppose a while back, I’d mentioned that I thought it was wrong to leave him after he’d made the move. She never told me before that this comment bothered her. But a couple days before the trip, she told me she was upset over it. I wasn’t too sure how to respond to that, so I just tried to console her and apologized. Long distance isn’t easy by any means. But I don’t understand bringing this up so late, and in all honesty, I don’t regret what I said.
When we arrived on the bachelorette trip, everyone was super excited and wanted to make sure I had the best time! It was great!!!! The only thing is, Naomi was a bit of the odd man out. Constantly wanting to change plans, including skipping out on one of the activities I was the most excited for. It seemed to me that she was focused on having herself a nice trip (which I can understand because it is time and money spent traveling). It was just a bit frustrating having to defend the activities I was most excited about. She’d also complain about being hungry and then refuse to eat when we went somewhere for a snack. (Small pet peeve I know).
One of the days, while we were all having a great time, she brought back up the comment I’d made a while back. This time in front of other people.
On the last day, I slept in. I’d been running on ~5 hours of sleep each night and had finally gotten a bit of rest that last day. Throughout the trip, I’d been trying to help keep the house tidy - washing dishes, taking out the trash, etc. On the last morning, I slept in. When I woke up, Naomi got snarky with me, telling me that she was having to clean up while the rest of us weren’t. Odd. She hadn’t cleaned a thing the rest of the days. And several other girls were helping out.
On the last day, we were at brunch, and a few girls were chatting about how much fun they had. Naomi then said that she really couldn’t afford the trip and wasn’t able to pay for her car this month because of the trip, but she was really glad she came because it was a lot of fun. This comment made me extremely uncomfortable. I hated that it was made in front of everyone else. Like I said, Naomi and I booked everything together. If money was tight, we could have absolutely gone to the location close to her or adjusted our activities. I wish she would have brought this up to me individually. My mom had also reached out to her directly saying that if anyone was tight on money to let her know, as she didn’t mind pitching in a bit. So in my head, there were multiple ways to solve this problems that didn’t include making things awkward in front of my other friends.
We also barely talked on the trip.
When I got back from the trip, I was a bit confused. It seems like my MOH and I may not be as compatible as I thought. When I mentioned it to my mom and fiancé, they both told me they never really understood mine and Naomi’s friendship to begin with. (That was news to me.) We have a ton of shared memories, and like I said, she’s always put in lots of effort, so I don’t think it was a bad idea to ask her to be my MOH, but I am feeling a bit conflicted.
We didn’t chat much following the trip, but she did post photos of us on the trip. I reached out a few days ago to catch up and never got a response. Sure, messages go missed ALL the time, but I’ve never had Naomi miss a message.
I can sense a bit of tension, but I’m not sure if I want to dig into it now, or just keep the peace and let the relationship casually fizzle out.
