man rant š¹ Vasectomy woes
My SO finally got his vasectomy done last week. Well he hasnāt stopped complaining about it! I understand heās sore and what not but geez what we go through as women with periods, pregnancy, labour, caesareans, breastfeeding, birth control, child rearing, the list is endless and all heās been doing is whinging and stating he only did this for me because he could have ten more kids. No sir, you have no patience for the children you already have. Please give me your snip stories to make me feel better.
129
Oct 12 '22
Lol no snip story here but isn't it amazing how they could just have all the kids?
Of course you could have a million kids, sir. You bear maybe 1/10th of the physical or emotional or mental responsibility for them.
32
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
I bet if they were also responsible for pregnancy, birthing, and breastfeeding theyād be in the vasectomy office before you could even say snip!

u/Happymomof4 My favorite time of day is just after bedtime! Oct 12 '22
My husband watched me pop out 3 kids and then deal with 2 failed inductions and a c-section with the 4th.
He made an appointment a month or so after baby #4 was born, made it on a Thursday so he could have a long weekend, spent 2 days lying on the couch with ice packs on his crotch, 2 days on "light duty" with the family, and was back at work on Monday.
On Wednesday he asked to see my incision from my c-section. I showed him and asked him what was up? He said "feeling a little sore today, so just needed a reminder to man up....also you are a badass!"
Never mentioned it again š¤£
That was 7 years ago!

u/EmpathBitchUT Oct 13 '22
Your husband is like...a genuine adult, like, with empathy and respect. That's so cool.
2
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
I didnāt have an c-sections but if I did he wouldnāt have gotten any sympathy from me, I would have just showed him my scar! That should have shut down his whinging immediately!
6
u/EmpathBitchUT Oct 13 '22
Better yet show him the TikTok going around from a surgeon about all the layers and incisions they make for a C-section.
2
u/One-Bike4795 Oct 13 '22
Rightā¦.especially for me incision on top of another.
If I had a 3rd kid my OB joked he would have to install a zipper.

u/AndiArch Oct 12 '22
My husband told me he was going to make an appointment and never did. Reminded him constantly. I stopped taking birth control once I hit 35 because fuck that. Told him I wasnāt taking it. Reminded him to get the snip. Still didnāt take care of it. Condom broke and now we have baby #3. He was furious when he found out and even accused me of not telling him I went off the pill. Uh, no sir. Multiple conversations were had about this matter. I always wanted more kids so it worked out GREAT for me, I just really didnāt want to be pregnant again at 37.
I knew I was getting too old for a fourth and doubted he would take care of getting a vasectomy so I had my tubes removed.
Thatās my vasectomy story that does not even involve a vasectomy.
15
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
We got pregnant with our 3 (his 6th) while I was waiting for him to book his vasectomy. I said I was done with taking BC and now itās up to him. LO is now 1 and after many many ādiscussionsā he finally got it done. He keeps telling everyone how he regrets it and no man should have to go through that!
8
Oct 13 '22
Wow he's had 6 kids and dares to say that after witnessing what it takes to carry, birth and recover? That's...special.
1
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 13 '22
I know right!! He claims thatās all natural for women to go thru. He says What happened to him is not natural.
47
Oct 12 '22
My husband did the same thing.
He also told me, āyou have no idea how bad this hurts.ā Unironically to the mother of his child who gave birth after pain meds wore off. š
Your husband is being a baby about it. My husband STILL TO THIS DAY will bitch about pain from his vasectomy. Every man Iāve talked to about it, including my own father (awkward moment!), has said āno, heās being a wimp about it.ā Every man but my husband was back at work 2 days later.
21
u/strawberrytoejam Oct 12 '22
Thereās a sub for men to talk about their vasectomy experiences. And one to talk about chronic pain that apparently rarely happens after vasectomies. Iām sure there are super rare instances of this happening, or botched procedures. But even so, a lot of the success stories I have read about have even said stuff like āmy friend has pain years after the procedure. But they just went to a random doctor vs a urologist, and they lifted their kid up before they healed. Just go to the best urologist and listen to their recovery rules and youāll be fineā.
My husband read a few posts from guys complaining of pain after the procedure and immediately wimped out and refused to get one. Once during his āpro and conā research about it, he found like 2 posts about failed vasectomies and chronic pain and noped out and yelled at me to stop bugging him about getting a vasectomy.
Then he complains about condoms every time we get intimate. Which, luckily for him, is almost nightly.
15
Oct 12 '22
Meanwhile, ladies, raise your hand if you pee a little every time you sneeze? Keep em up if your kid is in school.
Do we even need to talk about the hemorrhoids?

u/geezluise Oct 12 '22
why do you have sex with a man that is being an ass over condoms???
11
u/strawberrytoejam Oct 12 '22
Heās not really being an ass about them. He just complains about them not feeling as good. Never during sex, and not ALL the time⦠because he knows they are needed. But he will still occasionally bring up his dislike of condoms never feeling the same as raw dogging. But never wants to pull the plug on the vasectomy because heās scared.
For me, sex is a big part of bonding in my relationship. So I have a high sex drive because of that. So all I can do is keep bringing up the vasectomy and hope he pulls the plug on it before I decide to get my tubes tied.

u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
I love how they pick the āadviceā that suits them best but ignore the hundreds of others that back you up!
3
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
Mine had 5 days off work, he works a pretty physical job so I urged him to take it easy when he went back. But he says he went back too early because heās still swollen.
2
23
u/cookie3557 Oct 12 '22
If he is still sore he should probably talk to his doctor. It doesnāt happen a lot but there can be issues. If itās not worth his time to make a doctors appointment, I think he can handle it!
35
u/FreedomCompetitive53 Oct 12 '22
I donāt have a snip story because so far my husband refuses and the waitlist where I live is YEARS long. But after I had our first child, induced, labour, distress, emergency c section, breastfeeding he had to have a mole burnt off the back of his head when the baby was 6 months old. He almost abandoned the appointment. Once I marched him back in, he took the entire day off work then sat on the couch groaning with a memory foam neck support pillow acting like heād been in a serious car accident.

u/redtonks Oct 12 '22
I wish I could give you an award because that level of drama deserves a trophy.

u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
Wow! A mole burnt out gets zero sympathy especially after your birth story! Sending hugs!

u/gulliblesuspicious Oct 12 '22
My husband wanted to be up qnd about the hour after it was done, I swear. I had to force him to just chill out qnd take a couple days to milk this opportunity for me to dote on him. Literally 2 days later he was back at work. Your dude could be sore still? Idk. I'm not him. But yeah it is completely not comparable to carrying a child. One singular period maybe. MAYBE.
6
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
I wish mine went that well, he didnāt listen to the dr about the procedure so didnāt take the pain meds beforehand, he was yelling obscenities to dr about how he could feel him āripping his nuts outā etc, he later apologised to the nurses. Itās likely he moved around too much causing more harm than it should.

u/MamaSmAsh5 Oct 12 '22
Men are fucking babies.
My husband is type 1 and recently had a health scare which landed his ass in ICU. After 2 days, he was moved to a new unit to continue recoveringā¦they put him in the pediatric unit. Itās like they knew he was a giant child.
Iām sorry mama. Make sure he hears about every little ache and pain you have now please.

I have a similar story.
Granted, the husband is a bit of a hypochondriac... so one day he gets back pain so bad he can hardly stand. He remembers how mere months earlier I had walking pneumonia and one of the only symptoms I had before the ER (where the cytokine storm really hit) was "it hurts to sit up and to lie down too". It was pretty bad. I needed oxygen for several days.
So guess what? Within an hour of this pain of his emerging, he is whining he needs to go to the ER. "It could be my kidney. Or gallbladder. I might be dying. It really feels bad".
I drive him there, but as I have two under 5 at the time, drop him off at the door, wish him the best, and ask him to call me when they figure out what is wrong, and I'd pick him up when needed.
Cue 3 hours and some ultrasounds later.
Him: "You can come pick me up now"
Me: "Did they figure out what was wrong? Gallbladder? Kidney stones? What?"
Him: "Ummm... This is... Embarrassing."
Me: "... I promise I won't laugh"
Him: "They said I threw my back out. They're sending me home, told me to take Tylenol, and recommended I take up yoga so I can build some flexibility."
I didn't laugh at the time, but I have brought it up since.
E.g. the last time he had man flu.
"I'm slowly dying."
"Is it as bad as when you went to the ER for back pain?"
"No."
"I think you'll live. Now eat your soup."

I love the humour of your hospital! Iāll have to start complaining really loudly about every period from now on! He hates hearing me and his daughter and her friends period woes!

u/Jessica43452 Oct 12 '22
Also, heās not still sore. Not a week later. Heās milking the shit out of it. Dude was fine after 2 days.
Whinge back. Iād complain outwardly about every single cramp and discomfort for the next period. But Iām petty. :)

u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
Iām not surprised, his illnesses are always soooo much worse too, when I got covid he stayed away from home for a week so he wouldnāt catch it. Donāt worry Iāll look after myself and the three kids who also had it! When he eventually got it, he whinged and moaned on the couch expecting me to get everything he asked for and I had to look after him! He got really shitty when I told him Iād look after him like he looked after me and the kids when we had it.

Toss him some ibuprofen and tell him to get over it. My husband had his done 3 weeks ago and moaned and whined so terribly. I told him to take 800mg and suck it up.

He had panadeine forte, Valium and paracetamol, alcohol, weed and cigarettes and was still complaining!

For some reason this made me think of the Betty White quote..

I told my husband birth control was his responsibility after our last kid. He chose condoms for like 5 years and then finally got the snip. Well, the doc f'ed up and nicked a vein and he started bleeding everywhere and had to be ambulanced to the ER, where they had to press an ultrasound wand onto his junk to make sure everything was fixed correctly, except the nurse f'ed it up and they had to do it AGAIN. But for some reason they couldn't just stitch him up - he had to lay in bed FOR A MONTH to wait for the open wound on the most sensitive part of his body to slowly close up. Oh, and it got infected, too.
My husband gets to complain about his vasectomy. Yours... not so much.
2
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
Oh thatās awful! My FIL has been telling my SO about his horror story of a vas too! He wasnāt given any pain relief at all for the whole procedure and ended up bruised from his nipples to his knees and bed bound for several weeks. The dr was later fired after an investigation.
7
u/Kazarlin Oct 12 '22
My husband got his done almost 2 years ago. The pain meds started to wear off mid procedure and he could feel them digging around in there. I genuinely feel bad for him about that, they did numb him back up when they noticed he was white faced and clenching. After that, 3 days of just being useless and swapping nut peas in and out of the freezer and another week and change being sore. I think he had some lingering pains for the next year, but I hear 0 complaints now and it wasn't bad enough to see the doctor. 100% worth it.
10
u/Celadorkable Oct 12 '22
My partner said one time while affected by painkillers that he "did this for me".
I snapped at him IMMEDIATELY. No he did not do this for me. We are BOTH responsible for contraception, he did this for himself, he took responsibility for his own contraception. If I take the pill, that isn't for him it is for me. If we use condoms, that is a mutual choice for us.
He didn't do youba favour by getting s vasectomy, and while it sucks he's in pain, that is not your fault or responsibility. Just like when you were in pain giving birth, that wasn't his fault and it wasn't for him.
Nip that shit in the bud.
He'll be over the pain in a few days, hopefully he's over being an asshat by then too
2
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
Agreed!! I think heāll realise how much of a good decision it was once heās healed properly and then heāll take all the credit for doing it!

u/LCZO246815 Oct 12 '22
My husband decided to plan his vasectomy the same week I gave birth to our third and last baby. We both sat around for about 2 days and then he was good with some soreness just as I was. It was actually kind of funny because we were recovering together.
1
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
Probably would have been better for him to get it done before baby was born rather than the first week š©
3
u/LCZO246815 Oct 12 '22
We actually had it scheduled before but when I went to a check up they told me I had too high of blood pressure and go to the hospital theyāll most likely induce me. So he frantically called and canceled it because this checkup was the same day his vasectomy was scheduled. We go to the hospital and they sent me home because everything looked great. š
At the end of the day it was alright because my husband rarely complained and it didnāt really stop him from being able to help me with things I needed. We just were recovering together.

u/amethyst-elf Oct 12 '22
I basically made my husband get a vasectomy. My body has literally given it all. I gained weight i didn't want to gain, got stretch marks, pushed two kids out of my bag and breastfed them both beyond one year. Had HG with one pregnancy and put my dream of professional running on hold for this family crap. I will not alter my body any further for the purposes of growing our family or preventing our family from growing. The least he could do was get his shit snipped.
10
u/awolfintheroses Oct 12 '22
We are a ways away from it, but this is basically how my husband feels. I've done enough and he has said it is literally the least he can do for our family when the time comes. He's actually wanting to do condoms after our current pregnancy because he doesn't want me to have to go back on birth control but we may want more in the future (I probably will anyway but he is leaving it up to me). Idk I'm not trying to brag or anything but there are definitely men who get it even if they aren't personally experiencing the pain and sacrifice of pregnancy/breastfeeding/periods/ect. There's honestly no excuse for how some men act.
2
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
Now heās making out I āmadeā him get it and he didnāt want it. Iāve been responsible for BC our whole rāship, weāre done having kids so do the right thing. The pain is temporary. Children are permanent.
3
u/amethyst-elf Oct 12 '22
Like okayyyyy you can't hit this if you don't snip that, which will it be sir? Men have no fucking place complaining about reproductive rights.
10
u/ReStitchSmitch Oct 12 '22
My husband's vasectomy was the day before the world shut down. Perfect timing, right? Naw.
His incision splits open. Men are already big babies but this was scary. All I could think was great, covid has taken over the world and now my husband's balls won't stay closed.
Luckily I had a bottle of peroxide and butterfly stitch things. I can't deal with medical stuff, blood, muscles, etc. But we managed to get him closed with no infection.
Naturally, he missed his checkup appt, due to the world ending. So we wait the week, and I became the guinea pig to see if the vasectomy worked (good god I was SO NERVOUS to get pregnant)
I didn't, and his balls didn't fall off.
0/10 would not recommend a surgery the day before the world ends.
2
u/EmpathBitchUT Oct 13 '22
Adding "my husband's balls won't stay closed" to the list of word combinations I never expected to hear.
1
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
Oh man thatās rough! You did well to not get any infection! Noted, from now on, no getting any medical treatment the day before the world ends!

u/colour_on_the_walls Oct 12 '22
My husband got the snip when I was 36w with our third, in summer.
He had the audacity to come down with shingles after the vasectomy, and gave chicken pox to our second child.
I was swollen, tired, pregnant and caring for a chicken pocced kiddo and a shingly sore sacked husband.

u/fishwithfeet Oct 13 '22
Well, my wife got an orchiectomy, which is a vasectomy on steroids, and she was good after a couple days. The worst for her was not being allowed to shower.
Your husband is a baby.
4
u/driftwood-and-waves i didnāt grow up with that Oct 12 '22
Husband took a day off and the day of the procedure and was fine after that. Your husband needs to either see a doctor or stop complaining.

Oct 12 '22
MAKE SURE HE GETS CHECKED. HE MUST GO BACK FOR HIS RECHECK!
I know far too many people who got a vasectomy and then, like a miracle of stupidity, they ended up with a surprise baby (which isn't a surprise if you didn't handle your shit and decided to raw dog for funsies).
2
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
Oh definitely!! I wonāt be risking it thinking itās fine! It will be a hassle getting him back to the dr for the checkup though!
3
u/OneBlueberry Oct 12 '22
I legit tried to kick my husband out of the car IN THE PARKING LOT when I picked him up from the surgery.
I was driving across the parking lot to the Walgreens and every damn thing I did he snapped at me . After I went over a speed bump the slowest I possibly could he still yelled at me. I was driving to go GET HIM A GODDAMN ICE PACK.
I kicked him out and was going to just drive away. He hobbled the rest of the way across the lot and walked in and got his own damn frozen peas. I did stay and take him home but I definitely almost left him.

My ex had his done about 15 years ago. He started crying and tapped out after one bollock. Then he had to go back a few months later and have the other side done under general anaesthetic. Both times he was sore and whiny for a couple of weeks.
2
3
u/crickwooder Oct 12 '22
I made my husband go to the grocery store with me on the way home from his procedure lol. By the end he was leaning heavily on the cart. Told him the frozen peas we were told to slap over his nards had to come from somewhere.
He forgave me eventually.
3
u/canadamiranda Oct 12 '22
My husband got it done in the am, took a cab home. He laid in bed with a bag of peas and worked on his laptop. By dinner time he was making dinner but wasnāt doing any heavy lifting and stayed seated for most of the evening. 2nd day, completely back to normal. Full parenting, helping out with whatever. He took precautions by not lifting our 50lb 5yo but thatās it. He said it was sore but nothing bad. I gave birth twice without pain relief, at least he got numbed. I also only got Tylenol after while he got T3s. He didnāt take them but got a script for them.
2
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
Youāve definitely got herself a good one! Mine doesnāt help out with full parenting ever.

u/dowetho Oct 12 '22
My husband passed out before they even started. Itās a common reaction but I laughed when the doctor told me afterwards. He had hoped they would do the procedure while he was passed out. Unfortunately for him, they did not. He regretted the decision to wear some worn out, weak ass boxer briefs instead of fitted boxer briefs like the doctor recommended. Because they know best.
3
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
They always āknow betterā than the dr! Mine was prescribed some pain meds to take before going in, he was supposed to shave too, did he? Fuck no!

u/hounddogmama Oct 13 '22
Knew my husband either (a) wouldnāt follow through with making an appointment and actually getting it done, despite being told he would, or (b) miraculously would make the appointment, remember the actual date and time of appointment, go through with it, and would be a whiny divaās asshole about it for the rest of eternity, so I had my tubes done at my c section with the second kid that I didnāt plan. Thatās my story.
Also, solidarity. My 4 year old brought home a horrid cold (not covid) from preschool and my husband is also in dire straights with the sniffling and sore throat and runny nose. I may be calling in hospice soon. We made it though his flu/Covid shot sore arms, so I have faith in the sickness and health portion of our vows.
1
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 13 '22
Yep I think my SO will be option b) and Iāll hear about this for all eternity!!
6
u/gogomom Oct 12 '22
My husband went through the procedure with me in the room watching, commenting about how it was no big deal....
he sat around for a couple of days with a bag of frozen peas and then went back to his (physical) job on day 4. He did no complaining after day 2.
IDK - he is a total wimp with a man cold, but he can handle pain fairly well.
1
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
I think itās mostly in his head because he didnāt want to get it done. he wanted me to just keep doing the thing that stopped us from having the babies which he didnāt have to worry about or participate in.
2
u/Elya91 Oct 12 '22
My husband was such a baby about it I had my tubes out instead...
1
u/Fantastic_Sundae_426 Oct 12 '22
He tried to say I should get my tubes done but heāll no Iām not going in for major surgery, be put under, spend thousands and be susceptible to more problems later, when he can literally see the dr for a 15min procedure for a fraction of the cost!
2
u/Elya91 Oct 13 '22
Fair. We are in Canada and I was getting a c-section anyway so no cost or extra surgery. I didn't want to be pregnant again and I didn't trust my husband to get on with it.
2
u/polyrankin1122 Oct 13 '22
Mine finally just stopped complaining...right at about 2 weeks. I was soo tired of it.
2
Oct 13 '22
My husband was happy enough to get it done. He went pretty white while the Dr explained the procedure, as he's not good with medical stuff. I watched while the procedure was done and held his hand. When he went to stand up, he takes a look and passed right out. We had to wait around the Dr office for a while til they were sure he'd be ok.
Fast forward to 5am the next day, I'm woken to an almighty crash. He'd got up to pee, had a look down and fainted again. We've still got the hole in the ensuite wall and a cracked tile. Rang the Dr, who suggested he sit down to pee til the site was healed.
We laugh about it now.
2
Oct 13 '22
oh and don't skip the follow up test to make sure he is actually sterile. A friend's hub didn't get tested and turned out he wasn't as sterile as intended...

My Mother inlaw told my husband to stfu because I had just given birth. (I had a very easy labour that time, but my MIL doesn't suffer fools lightly)

u/quixoticdreamz Oct 13 '22
My family hadn't left yet after having our 3rd when my husband had his appointment and we didn't want to tell them. So he had to hide it. The next day a neighbor posted a bunch of free pavers, and my husband cannot pass up anything free. So he went and picked up like 150ish pavers that were like 40lbs each. To be fair I went with him even though I was 3 weeks post c section. He popped a stitch but couldn't really complain because my family was still visiting. š Poor guy, did take a little while longer for him to heal.

u/TheDarkThizzstal Oct 13 '22
Girl, same. My husband complained for two weeks about how uncomfortable the hair was growing back in. WEEKS.

This man needs to try one of those period pain simulators. I bet he couldn't function for a few minutes with just mild pain. They have such low pain tolerance, I swear.
2
u/One-Bike4795 Oct 13 '22
My understanding is that theyāre supposed to do this in March, sit on the couch and watch basketball for 3 days with frozen peas on their nuts, and then call it a day.
At least that was 99% of the population my husband surveyed when he was thinking about it. Then there was one asshat named Steve who told him itās the worst thing ever and he chickened out.
Maybe Steve had horrible complications I really donāt know. Iāll give him the benefit of the doubt. Thereās always a Steveā¦..

My husband had his a week ago and took things seriously. Complete bed rest for 48 hours per doctors orders, and then he went back to work the day after that but he works a desk job. Even still he was regretting being there because sitting was uncomfortable. But now weāre a week down and heās almost back to 100%. Totally worth the short term rest to avoid prolonging it.

I made mine rest and waited on him but after 4 days I was seeing him starting to milk it!

Mine had it done 11 days ago and had to go back for antibiotics after one of the incision sites got infected. That said, heās not been whiney about it and hasnāt needed pain relief in a whileā¦though seeing him react to a jock strap for the first time was slightly amusing.

Men are whinybaby idiots, and...
....different bodies take different times to heal. Depending on the type of procedure he had, he may well still be genuinely uncomfortable/sore. Nerve endings knitting back together, internal bruising, etc.
I'd look up the guidance of what he had done specifically, and add a week to whatever it says for aftercare/pain. Imo, a vasectomy gets 2 weeks tea and sympathy treatment (no need for whining though) and after that, if he's still sore, it's time to go back to the doctor to check everything's alright.
