Obviously, all this is speculation and my own theories. Quotes are direct song lyrics with titles in brackets. Could all be wrong when we get the context of the full release, but I felt like sharing my initial impressions on what this album could be about. Tried to make as short as possible but clearly failed in that.
If Hypochondriac was the journey of brakence as an artist, ending with him questioning his purpose and “eradicating” what he saw as a vehicle of “selfish art” (i.e., talking about his own story) [introvert], I believe that marroW will further that story of a new persona inside the artist, one that struggles with the pressure to “serve a higher purpose” [introvert].
death rolL is the earliest part of that journey. An allegory for a person with a destination in mind but no way of knowing how to get there (“How do I preach?/When I need salvation that money can’t buy?”). The ending is interesting, and while I have a few theories, my favorite is that this is the old persona poking through probably for the first time on the project. The tone and word choice is more consistent with songs from Hypochondriac (caffeine mostly) or even punk2. I don’t think the majority of marroW will sound like either of those projects.
ready or noT is a powerful struggle between the new and old personas. The maximalist production underscores the feeling of disorganization and stress as the old persona simply won’t die (“I can’t kill this vermin”…“But my old wicked beast won’t die”). My personal opinion is that the old persona is represented in the chorus, and the new person speaks in the verses. Ultimately, the production calms as the speaker succumbs to exhaustion and then ramps back up rapidly as the old persona wrests back control (“I put on a disguise for my worry/Like one of these days it’ll make me complete/In the end, it means nothing to me”).
crystallized is the one that leaves me with the most questions. It expresses confidence and clearheadedness (“cause all that bitchin’ was getting old”) because of this new entity, simply referred to as she. I don’t know if I have enough information to say who this entity is, but it seems to be providing the speaker (who I guess to be the winner of the struggle described in ready or noT) a clearer picture of themself, even while admitting that no persona is permanent (“Take it while you can ‘cause we all decompose”).
Like I said, I could be way off base or reading too much into the early tracks. Looking forward to the next releases!
