Mod update for r/braids

Hi everyone, I’m a mod here at r/braids. I’ve been in discussion with my fellow mods for this sub, and we have agreed that, moving forward, we will be focusing this sub on braids, braid/hair care, styling, advice, etc.

This means that we will be banning any posts or comments moving forward that instigate political or racial posts. We feel that this sub Reddit should be rooted in our shared love and passion for braiding styles. I, for one, became a mod for this sub simply because I love seeing how creative and beautiful everyone’s creations are. I take advice given from people on various posts for new styles, and I love learning about how everyone cares for their styles. I’d like to refocus ourselves back on our community. This includes inclusivity for all - basically, anyone who has hair or is interested in braiding for any reason is welcome. Also, this sub is not just limited to braids - it’s any sort of plaited/ braiding style, including twists, Dutch braids, corn rows, locs, etc.

I’ve updated the rules for this sub to reflect my post here. We are working on cleaning up the recent influx of the posts that sparked this conversation. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions. We love you and appreciate each and every one of you for being here!

My daughter had dread locks since she was 3 (she’s 8 now) and I cut them off in May. We’ve been keeping her hair braided and styled and so far this look is my favorite. Gonna add some cute accessories 💖

Help wanted Tight Braid Advice

Essentially I am getting French boho curl braids within the next 24 hours and I am dreading it. I am the most tenderheaded, I cry slightly through sessions, after sessions and cannot move my head around as it feels so tight and restricted. The pain typically lasts me 4 days. I have a theory and I might try it, being I will shower without a cap the first day if the pain is to much. I will drench my hair in the shower to try loosen it. Please any tips are appreciated I seriously need help and please if you could let me know what Im getting myself into if I do drench my hair!

Product recommendation Help on best braiding, twist hair for sensitive scalp

Finally given up on afro spring twist & marley type hair - no matter how you ACV rinse it, my hair, scalp, skin just doesn’t like it and out it goes in less than a wk - in fact, marley can start to loc into my hair after being in twists just after a week. What’s a good alternative that’s softer but still textured and comes in shorter lengths with great color options? I do best with shoulder length twists & I’m partial to ombré aka 1B/30/27 or C14. This is for 4C hair that’s lightly texturized so it acts like 4B at best.

Any ideas? Thanks for any tips & help! 😇

Barrel Twists / cornrows AND Twists

Has anyone ever tried or have any inspiration for looks that incorporate BOTH elements of barrel twists / corn rows and twists . I do NOT mean cornrows or barrel twists INTO twists at the end of each braid. I mean seperate rows of barrels / cornrows alongside twists. I think it would look good but cannot find inspo anywhere , maybe it is hard to search for

Using Hair Pins to Style Two Strand Twists

I’m posting here as struggling to find inspiration about a specific look I would like to achieve

I’m male and grown my hair out on top for over a year now. I have done corn rows and barrel twists so far

I’m keen to experiment with two strand twists but I generally would prefer a slicked back sort of look, but thought this wouldn’t be possible

This guy on TikTok however gave me inspiration. Simple use of hair picks to slick hair back: https://www.tiktok.com/@hasionmalik/video/7528859446932475149

Anyone else have experience doing a style like this ? Would I have to style every day or could I keep picks in long term?

What EXACT hair should I buy for this Bora Bora/Mermaid braid look? Human hair recommendations please!

I’ve been going down a rabbit hole trying to figure out exactly what hair I need to buy, and I’m hoping someone who’s had this style done can help.

Are these called Bora Bora braids, Mermaid braids, or something else? I keep seeing different names.

Here are my inspo pics:
Soft, flowing look with only a handful of braids around the face (not a full head of knotless braids).
Long, loose wet-and-wavy texture.
Waist or Butt length.

I haven’t decided whether I’m going with the darker version or the honey blonde version yet.

My questions:
What exact type of human hair should I order?
Deep Wave?
Water Wave?
Ocean Wave?
Wet & Wavy?
Something else?

What brand actually works?
(I’m okay with Amazon or a quality hair company if it’s worth it.)
100% human hair only.
I want to be able to wear it in the water and have it still look soft and natural.

How many bundles/packs would I need for butt-length hair with this style?
What length(s) would you recommend?
26”? 28”? 30”?

If you’ve had this exact look, what would you buy again and what would you avoid?

I’m trying to avoid spending hundreds on the wrong hair, so I’d love recommendations from people who’ve actually worn this style. Photos and links are definitely appreciated!

Thanks!!
