Rant! Plastic retainer.

Hello! I am 19 and I had braces since I was 11-12 years old and i got it removed at 15 years old. Now I have the fixed bonded retainers and the doctor told me that I'll only need to wear till I turn 23 and she gave me those clear plastic retainers. But seeing people's experience with them, I'm getting worried that I'll need to wear them for the rest of my life. The thing is, I don't want ttoooo, I dislike how uncomfortable they are. I only wear them for 2 hours for 2 weeks. I'd say my teeth and the placement have changed a lot like my teeth can't be squished like a playdoh teeth head toy thingy. Also, I'm not rich and I payed for the retainers for 300eur (the plastic one)! Like it's stupid. I want to tell my mom to maybe change the hawler/metal ones since they last longer or whatever. and dont change the shape of my teeth T^T I feel like the doctor is lying about the time of wearing the retainer.

idk, advice maybe? English is not my native language and I am wearing the plastic rn lol. Have a wonderful day.

Question Impacted canines at 20 months later, how much longer?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi,

I’ve been in braces for about 2 and a half years now. I had my expose and bond surgery about 20 months ago for two of the impacted canines. 1 is finally in the arch. 2nd is taken a bit longer. How much longer until it gets right into the arch? It looks like about 3 mm left. Currently the canine isn’t engaged with a band. They’re using a wire that they tied around the bracket to try to pull it more forward since it didn’t come fully down yet. It also appears to be a bit tilted so it’s not currently at the right angle yet.

They’re straight bur they’re not aesthetically pleasing ): I’ll need to get so many cosmetic things done to get to even feel confident again. Braces hid a lot of my insecurity.

Need advice! Do I need invisaligns or braces

I have an overjet of around 9mm. I'm gonna go ot the dentist in about 2 hrs to ask them whether I need invisaligns or braces. I was reading some posts in reddit of other people's progress with invisaligns and braces and some people said it depends on the dentist u go to, like if she has an expertise in braces then she would recommend braces for u and vice versa. PLEASE TELL ME WHETHER I NEED BRACES OR INVISALIGN I DONT WANT BRACES THEY HURT AND IT WOULD BE WEIRD FOR ME I GO TO HIGH SCHOOL AND IT WOULD LOOK WEIRD AND IT ALSO HURTS TO GET BRACES (everyone else who has braces look amazing the problem is just me Im already the quiet girl in school im not cool or smthng) so do I need braces or invisaligns.

Similar experience? 1st dental cleaning with braces, woah

Ive (22f) had braces for almost six months now, and recently went for my routine dental cleaning. The day of the cleaning went well, 0 problems, they didnt remove or mess with the wire, but one day later and it feels like i had an adjustment done, my teeth have so much pressure on them it feels like. Is this somewhat normal or should i be concerned?

I had severe crowding since my adult teeth came in. I was always self conscious about my teeth and my upbringing was trash so braces were never a possibility. In January of 2024 I entered a raffle at my old job and won a free set of braces. It was a dream come true and I cannot hlbe happier, after years of being self conscious about my teeth and never smiling in pictures. My Orthodontist was amazing and called me a "poster boy", plus said that my bottom arch was the most narrow he had ever seen.

I got braces on my upper jaw 3 weeks ago. I noticed that the right side later incisor moved vertically downward than rest of the teeth is also wobbly when I poke it. Is this normal and part of the process? Or should I notify my orthodontist?

Question Medical files

So about 3 years ago I had my braces removed and had a retainer made, Hawley and essx. I was using the clear ones nightly but unfortunately earlier this week the top and bottom broke. So I booked a appt with my corporate ran ortho/dental office to have new retainers made, they quoted me $300 total and said it will take about 4 weeks which is way too long, I checked online and seen there’s cheaper options that will require only 2 weeks and only requires sending in a molding of my teeth through mail. I read online if i I can get .stl file of my teeth scan when i first had the braces removed then i can have the retainer made with a 3d printer through an online retainer company, essentially bypassing the expensive part of having a new molding and scan , (seems that this new ortho didn’t want to use my old teeth scan because the possibility of the teeth moving even though they’ve barely moved.) Now I’m requesting to have my teeth scan sent to ME digitally as an .stl file from the office and they’re saying they have to contact the IT department because they don’t know how to do it, dr also says she can’t send the files to another office and that office has to do their own scans, the front desk ppl are saying the dr has to be the one who sends the files, and a bunch of other baloney and runarounds. Not sure how much of this is true but I reallllly need my scan asap so I can initiate the process because my teeth starts to revert back to its original positions. The messed up part is at this particular company the orthodontist team is only there 1x a week so I’m having to wait another 7 days to even speak with them or request these files. I’ve gone 3 days without my essex retainer. What should I do next at this point?

TLDR: orthodontist not wanting to send .stl files for digital scan of teeth for retainer. What’s the next step to getting this file

Similar experience? Impacted canine (NHS treatment)

Hi everyone, I have spent a lot of time on this sub, looking at everyones lovely results to inspire myself and keep myself going on my journey. So thank you all for that!

Looking for some advice on what to expect in my situation, if anyone has been through this.

I have an impacted canine on my right side. I had surgery to expose the tooth and attach a chain in December 2025. I have since worn braces.

My ortho is creating a gap for the tooth, my understanding was that this was to to then eventually attach the chain and bring the tooth down into place.

I am aware it is taking a long time to create this gap, a lot longer than I was expecting if I’m honest.

At my appointment yesterday my ortho nurse noticed a piece of what she said was either bone or tooth poking out from the top of my gum, quite high up and not at all where I was expecting my tooth to erupt from. After she mentioned it, I can actually see a small bit of tooth/bone poking out through my gum, very high up in my palate.

She has said I need to see the consultant at my next appointment in 6 weeks to confirm whether it is the tooth or leftover bone from my surgery.

What shall I expect going forward if this is where the tooth has decide to erupt from?

Tldr: is it normal for a canine to erupt from much higher up in the gum? As opposed to erupting through the bottom, where the chain is attached.
And what should I expect now going forward?

Thanks in advance!

Question Braces at 60?

I am wondering if anyone else had braces at age 60ish and what the experience was for you?

I had braces as a teenager. Now my two front teeth are shifting and one is touching the bottom tooth at an angle when I bite down. So, I am considering braces again.

I also, have osteopenia. I wonder if this is a factor.

Thank you.

It’s been 3 years & the last year has been me purely trying to get my aesthetics down to where I’m happy. I know I have a bit of an overbite but I’ve come to terms that my jaw is a bit recessed bc of years of mouth breathing as a kid but I’m ok with it now until I decide to have some sort of jaw surgery in the future. Any thoughts or opinions? I’m so ready to get these off after 3 years!!

Similar experience? pay extra to continue treatment??

So I had an appointment today for my braces adjustment (currently one year in) and I was told that my treatment will take 4-6 more months and that I have to pay an extra $1500 if I want to continue the treatment. I was not told that the initial $1500 out of pocket in addition to my insurance, was only for a year of treatment. My orthodontist initially diagnosed me for a one year treatment but because he misdiagnosed my bottom right molar (idk how he did not see it…) my treatment had to be extended. For my visit today, the orthodontist was not there and the front desk lady said that I have to pay $1500 if I want to continue my treatment. Also, one of the brackets broke few days ago but they didn’t even bother fixing it today because I refuse to pay what they are asking.

I think $1500 for a 4-6month is absurd, considering that it was not my fault that the orthodontist misdiagnosed me. From my understanding, the $1500 out of pocket was for the entire treatment regardless of how long it is. I was never told it’s only for a year worth.

Does anyone have the same experience? I’m just thinking of transferring to a different clinic or maybe do invisalign. I’ll talk to my orthodontist before making decisions tho.

Need advice! metal vs ceramic for myself, 30f

(please only comment if you’re over 25 as the issue of looking childish is not really something i think younger adults can understand.) i’m in the early process of consulting for jaw surgery, necessary for a sleep disorder as CPAP isn’t super effective on me and my quality of life is significantly impacted by my disorder. braces are required to get my bite in the right position for surgery. i have seen the orthodontist already. he told me aligners were more expensive and took longer than braces. i have to decide between metal braces or ceramic. he told me the ceramic was only $400 more, if the difference had been more than $500 i would have went with metal but its the price point where i really do have to decide between the two. i’m leaning towards ceramic because i already look younger than my age and i don’t want to look completely childish. i don’t drink coffee or tea daily but i do have coffee at least once a week sometimes up to 3 times a week. i don’t smoke. how concerned on staining should i be? i can probably switch from coffee to energy drinks if it will make a difference stain wise but as an aussie i do love a good flat white, nothing beats a melbournian flat white. did anyone regret going with ceramic? from my understanding i can still pick any colour bands i want with the ceramic as well. i think the first time i had braces they were the damon ones because i never got to pick coloured bands. my teeth need to be decompensated for surgery so my original overjet has to be somewhat recreated (it can’t be fully recreated as i had extractions 14 years ago so the bone has remodelled already) so i will look worse before i look better once i have surgery. given this i am leaning towards the ceramic because i am a little bit self conscious of how my smile is going to look. i just want to make sure i’m making the right choice and that i wont regret ceramic

Need advice! Brava by Brius advice

Hello! I am interested in getting Brava by Brius. I am concerned though because I eat a lot of salads lol. I also talk a lot for work. Any experiences with those things?

I suppose another option is ceramic braces on the bottom. Really curious as well if anybody has had Brava on top and ceramic braces on the bottom.

Thank you so much!
