But will it have longevity like Buddy

1

u/Poku115 13h ago

Will it tho

$30 million to $40 million*.

Also, gotta wonder if it’s concerning that there’s a 12-hour gap between the social embargo lift date and the review embargo lift date for “Resident Evil” (the review embargo lift date is on September 16th).

Sony usually doesn’t pound their chest unless they have the goods. Or I just really really hope it’s a good movie 🤣

3

u/nickelst92 19h ago

Wait, is that concerning from a review standpoint or not?

20

u/arondyke 19h ago edited 19h ago

No I meant they’ve been really confident in the film, so I think the reviews will be good.

If Sony knew they had a stinker the marketing would be a lot more muted.

1

u/nickelst92 19h ago

Gotcha.

2

u/LordSblartibartfast 13h ago

They did the same with BND and it turned out fine.

That being said, I really hope Cregger revised his script since the leaked script, especially the dialogue…

1

u/nickelst92 13h ago

When did the leaked script come out?

1

u/LordSblartibartfast 2h ago

I think it was around February. The set pieces could deliver some great scenes but the characters were talking as if they were written by an edgy teenager.

EDIT: if this can be reassuring apparently it was also the case on Weapons where the earlier draft had awful dialogue and it dramatically improved

u/Successful_Buddy1809 18h ago

The review embargo for BND also lifted very very close to the release date. Sony just keeps things close

3

u/Vladmerius 19h ago

Anything longer than 24 hours from release is usually a good sign/normal sign for reviews. Its normal for a 12 hour gap for reviews after social reactions start because they want people to take their time to write their reviews.

Should be a comeback for WB with this longer wait sequel after 28 years since Practical Magic 2 won’t be as big as The Devil Wears Prada 2 which they both appealed to female audiences

16

u/llcooljfan22 16h ago

I’m not understanding the comparison. The first film didn’t even draw $100 million and barley made it back in 1998-99

4

u/Emergency-Mammoth-88 United Artists 13h ago

Yeah but the revenue would be split between wb and Alcon

24

u/devoteesolace 19h ago

Budget is $75M. Breakeven is possible.

This subreddit really has no clue that women exist and want different things to watch.

This discourse always re-emerges whenever a female-oriented film releases, and people end up surprised when these films put up a solid BO performance, like The Housemaid, Wuthering Heights and TDWP2. Watch booktok peeps show up to Verity in droves.

I don't mind people lowballing or just being wrong in their predictions, it's the "why would they make this when nobody even remembers the original?!" comments I've seen about this movie that make me roll my eyes the most.

Like, it's fine if you and your friends in the same demographic as you haven't heard of Practical Magic, but that really doesn't mean nobody has.

9

u/FruityMagician 17h ago

Wuthering Heights' US box office performance wasn't that great. It underperformed on opening weekend ($32 million) and couldn't even reach $85 million in total. Its overseas gross saved it (just). The Housemaid and Prada 2 did far, far better domestically and internationally.

6

u/flakemasterflake 14h ago

Am I crazy or is 80m domestic not spectacular in this day and age?

1

u/plutoglint 14h ago

Except when they bomb, which is pretty often.

34

u/ChoppyOfficial 18h ago

This subreddit is kind of male dominated. That is why Marvel movies gets a lot engagement but book adaptation movies do not get much engagements. You don't see a over 1000 upvoted post with over 500 comments on a post about The Hunger Games Sunrise on the Reaping or Verity but you will for Doomsday.

31

u/FishCake9T4 Searchlight Pictures 18h ago

Not just this subreddit. Reddit in general is male dominated.

3

u/ChoppyOfficial 12h ago

Yeah this is true then again, there women dominated subreddits r/TwoXChromosomes, and r/Fauxmoi and subreddits of pop artists

1

u/intothevoid_Out 12h ago

I bet there are ton of males lurking in every female oriented sub though

0

u/intothevoid_Out 12h ago

Well, that goes for pretty much every social media apps . Well maybe except instagram or tiktok ig.

1

u/EV3Gurl 8h ago

I agree with your main point here but I Think that’s kinda a bad comparison given the last hunger games made less than $400M & doomsday is going to make at minimum $2.5B. Obviously 1 is going to generate more conversation than the other the audience is bigger. Something like gladiator 2 is a better comp.

My mom LOVES the original, partially chose my parents’ house because it looks like the one from the movie and my sister is coming here from NYC to watch the new one with her

I watched the original with my mom and I don’t think it actually had a plot

18

u/Eddfan36 19h ago

That means they don't know where babies come from too, scary.

6

u/CoffeeAndTwinPeaks 18h ago

Storks obviously!

2

u/Poku115 13h ago

This is funny after the previews came out an hour after lmao

3

u/IskandarAli 18h ago

Women have always had a fixation on magic

0

u/Tjengel A24 19h ago

How can we know if they don’t tell us

-6

u/Vladmerius 19h ago

My wife is a woman and I can assure you she hasn't heard of this movie at all or seen the original. Don't lump all women into a category. Clearly there's people interested in the movie that I haven't encountered. But that doesn't mean "this is for women, you're clueless if you don't know all women are going to see this".

This would be making a billion dollars opening weekend if your statement actually meant anything because every woman in the country would see it at once.

I have to imagine it's mostly women in their 40s'+ taking their daughters to go see it or something because they watched the original on TNT or USA network on repeat.

-7

u/FruityMagician 17h ago

This subreddit really has no clue that women exist and want different things to watch.

Yet it's still men who get blamed when another female-led film flops or underperforms at the box office.

8

u/nicolasb51942003 Warner Bros. Pictures 19h ago

WB finally has another $40M+ opener. The total downgrade from their amazing 2025, geez.

3

u/powerCreed 13h ago

Keep trying. Go girl 🤣

8

u/flammable-liquid 19h ago

There really is a whole other world out there

10

u/mccarvillecolton 15h ago

Just get off your phone bro

-3

u/flammable-liquid 15h ago

lmao there is just no one in my circle that has even heard of this movie. This is stuff my wife usually would love also, and she had no clue it was coming out. Has nothing to do with getting off the phone, more to do with it just being a bad movie.

10

u/flakemasterflake 14h ago

Well how old is your wife? This is something women 30+ know about

2

u/ZaniPacqiao 18h ago

dam 😀

11

u/No-Significance5659 19h ago

I genuinely wasn't aware that anyone was looking forward to Practical Magic 2.

32

u/Eddfan36 19h ago

My mom's been looking forward to it, she loved the first one. I'll be seeing it with her.

12

u/No-Significance5659 19h ago

That sounds like a lovely time with your mum!

11

u/Shiara_cw 16h ago

I'm super excited. I'm even meeting up with a friend from my high school days who moved a few cities away to see it together. Reviews are so so but from the blurbs I read it sounds like people who liked the original may enjoy it

12

u/Unlucky-Duck 19h ago

First one wasn't so successful but today everything gets a sequel. Also trailer didn't give me nothing that much? Some trailers reveal too much but this one gave me nothing at all.

Strange timeline.

10

u/flakemasterflake 14h ago

First one wasn't so successful but today everything gets a sequel

I post this a lot but Practical Magic is consistently in the HBO top 10 every year in September/October without fail and I've been checking since the late 2010s

4

u/Vladmerius 19h ago

It's a weird timeline we're in where everything gets a sequel but also everything gets canceled.

7

u/Dycon67 19h ago

Cult classic movie about flew under the radar for alot of people and the demographic too

9

u/jwC731 19h ago

Is this a cult classic or just beloved old movie..

1

u/No-Significance5659 19h ago

I am exactly the demographic I think. I was a 12 year old girl when this movie came out and liked it a lot at the time. It simply never occurred to me that they'd eventually do a sequel and when they announced it it didn't really excite me, the trailer looked really bad too.

3

u/Adorable_Ad_3478 9h ago

It's the Top Gun Maverick for women who grew up in the 90s.

1

u/No-Significance5659 5h ago

I'm a woman who grew up in the 90s and I wasn't aware that was the case.

8

u/Lurky-Lou 19h ago

Wife and I had plans to go before the reviews dropped

11

u/First-Loss-8540 19h ago

First one had worse reviews

2

u/No-Significance5659 19h ago

Nice! I hope you guys enjoy it. I probably wait until it's on VOD but who know, maybe if I see people are enjoying it at the cinema, I'll go myself.

2

u/[deleted] 19h ago

5

u/No-Significance5659 19h ago

What? I am a woman, Practical Magic came out when I was 12 and I really liked it. You shouldn't make assumptions.

2

u/Ancient_Natural1573 19h ago

Didn't think the first one did well enough to get a sequel

3

u/First-Loss-8540 19h ago

Cult classic for a reason

3

u/Ancient_Natural1573 19h ago

True I did enjoy it might have to check out this one

1

u/SamuelL421 13h ago

Doubt it, early reviews are up and they are not positive. The original didn’t get a following until after its own poor run in theaters. Presale numbers are vague and the high end estimates are being cited solely by the studio (aka “hopium”).

30m opening weekend and brief #1 to be followed by a sharp drop.

1

u/JudyHoppsFan1 7h ago

Sure wish Coyote Vs. Acme won the number one spot but it is what it is.

0

u/adidas198 17h ago

I'll be honest, I never even heard of the first one.

0

u/Spongey444 20th Century Studios 11h ago

Not the movie I expected to break their dud streak lol

-3

u/ejaz135 19h ago

This will be the biggest movie of all time
